Without Permission There is No Success
Śrīla Prabhupāda repeatedly emphasizes that true knowledge begins with understanding that everything belongs to the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Because Kṛṣṇa is the ultimate proprietor, no one—from the highest demigod down to the ordinary human being—has the right to act independently. Therefore, a sincere devotee strictly follows the etiquette of always seeking proper permission before taking action.
The Supreme Proprietorship of Kṛṣṇa
Ignorance causes the conditioned soul to think that they own the resources of the material world. Śrīla Prabhupāda points out that recognizing Kṛṣṇa's ownership is the basis of honesty; taking or using anything without acknowledging the true owner is a form of theft.
- If this pencil belongs to me, the etiquette is - My students sometimes ask, "Can I use this pencil?" "Yes, you can." Similarly, if I know that everything belongs to Krsna, I will not use anything without His permission. That is honesty and that is knowledge.
- That (to think it maybe nobody's and take it) is also stealing. Because it must belong to somebody. And you take it without his permission. You may not know exactly who is the proprietor, but you know, "It must belong to someone." That is knowledge.
- We cannot hide anything from Him, and we receive the results of our karma because the witness is Krsna Himself within the heart. How, then, can we avoid Him? Without Krsna's permission, we cannot do anything.
- If we can construct a temple and building without permission of the landlord that will be our greatest triumph. If such a law is inaugurated then it is to be supposed that it is Krsna's plan.
The Etiquette of Devotional Service
In the management of spiritual societies and personal relationships, protocol is vital. Śrīla Prabhupāda maintained strict standards regarding temple management and Deity worship, ensuring that his disciples learned the necessity of acting only with the explicit permission of superior authorities.
- I understand from Sudama Goswami that Gaurasundara has handed over to you some portion of the proceeds from the sale of the Temple there. I do not know why he has sold the Temple without my permission. He had no right to do such a thing.
- You should not pay anything without my permission. Who has requested you to give them money? What is this nonsense? Now, you don't give a single paise without first asking my permission.
- One should not offer obeisances to others before the Deity. (27) One should not sit near the Deity without taking the spiritual master's permission.
- So far the new towers are concerned, not a single space should be allotted without my permission.
The Subordinate Position of the Demigods
Less intelligent persons often worship demigods for material gain, thinking the demigods are independent lords. Śrīla Prabhupāda corrects this misconception, explaining that no universal manager or heavenly resident can act or bestow a blessing without Kṛṣṇa's direct sanction.
- The demigods cannot award benediction to the devotees without the permission of the Supreme Lord. The living entity may forget that everything is the property of the Supreme Lord, but the demigods do not forget.
- Whatever benefit is supposed to be derived from the demigods is actually bestowed by the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Without the permission of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, one cannot bestow any benefit upon others.
- When Lord Brahma went to induce Priyavrata to accept the responsibility for ruling the universe, he did not go whimsically; he was following the dictations of the Supreme Lord. Brahma and other genuine authorities never do anything without His permission.
- Without their (the denizens of the heavenly planets) permission, Satyabhama had uprooted a parijata tree, which is not to be found on the earth planet.
The Restrictions of Material Nature
The material universe and human society are perfectly organized and governed by strict laws. Śrīla Prabhupāda points out that one cannot arbitrarily cross cosmic boundaries, such as traveling to other planets, or bypass social boundaries and household etiquette without the required qualifications and permission.
- They are trying to go to the moon planet, unsuccessful. They cannot go. Therefore we are conditioned. I am conditioned to live on this planet. I cannot go to other planet without permission. It is common sense.
- Putana entered the county of Gokula, the residential quarter of Nanda Maharaja, without permission. Dressing herself just like a beautiful woman, she entered the house of Mother Yasoda.
- Without asking anyone's permission, she entered Nanda Maharaja's room, where she saw the child (Krsna) sleeping in bed, His unlimited power covered like a powerful fire covered by ashes.
- Krsna said, "My dear friends, I can understand that you have left your homes without the permission of your guardians."
Conclusion
To live harmoniously in both the material and spiritual realms, one must understand the boundaries of their authority. Śrīla Prabhupāda establishes that because Kṛṣṇa is the absolute proprietor of all existence, acting independently or whimsically is a sign of deep ignorance and an invitation to karmic reaction. True civilized behavior—whether in managing a temple, interacting with the spiritual master, or navigating the laws of material nature—requires the humility to always seek proper sanction. By acknowledging that we cannot do anything without permission, a sincere soul Abandons the false ego of being the controller and safely advances on the path of pure devotional service.
