Without Following the Ācāryas Spiritual Perfection is Impossible
Śrīla Prabhupāda constantly warns his followers against the danger of mental speculation in spiritual life. According to Vedic injunctions, true religion is given directly by the Supreme Lord and handed down through a chain of self-realized teachers. Therefore, attempting to practice spirituality without following the authorized regulations of the ācāryas and the revealed scriptures is a path that leads only to illusion and societal disturbance.
The Disturbance of Unauthorized Practice
Spiritual life is a precise science governed by strict rules, not a platform for sentimental invention. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that when individuals try to practice devotional service without following the pañcarātrikī-vidhi and the previous ācāryas, their actions produce no spiritual fruit and simply create chaos.
- Just like we were discussing this point, sarvopadhi-vinirmuktam. This is pancaratriki-vidhi. Without following these principles, the so-called devotional service, hari-bhakti, utpata, simply a disturbance.
- In the scripture known as Brahma-yamala it is stated, "If someone wants to pose himself as a great devotee without following the authorities of the revealed scriptures, then his activities will never help him to make progress in devotional service."
- In this age, Kali-yuga, people are indulging in such necessities of life without following the rules and regulations, and this deterioration of social and moral rules is certainly lamentable because of the harmful effects of such beastly behavior.
- One who acts without following the regulations of the scriptures will not attain the Absolute Truth. He will get some temporary result, but not the ultimate end of life.
The Necessity of the Paramparā
The Vedic knowledge is perfect because it descends through an unbroken chain of authorized teachers. Śrīla Prabhupāda firmly states that no one can properly understand the Bhagavad-gītā or become a genuine spiritual master without strictly following the paramparā system.
- No one can be a bona fide spiritual master without following this principle of disciplic succession.
- Mahajano yena gatah. You cannot manufacture your ways of thinking. What you are? You are most insignificant living entity. And without following the acaryas, without following the mahajanas, without following the sastra, how you can teach.
- In order to preach the Bhagavad-gita we have to create the Mahatmas and not the Foolish Scholars who have unauthorizedly taken up the Bhagavad-gita without following the parampara line. That is an important point.
- So acaryavan puruso veda. Without following the acarya, if we simply theorize, that is not good.
Avoiding Premature Elevation
A common trap for immature practitioners is attempting to skip the basic rules to mimic advanced stages of devotion. Śrīla Prabhupāda warns that delving into the intimate pastimes of Kṛṣṇa without properly following the regulative principles and the great authorities is a serious offense.
- Foolish people who are not in the transcendental disciplic succession commit great blunders by trying to understand the highest transcendental rasa known as the rasa dance without following in the footsteps of Sukadeva Gosvami.
- The neophytes, due to their being in the lower stage of devotional service, are invariably envious, so much so that they invent their own ways and means of devotional regulations without following the acaryas.
- Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu Himself indicates herein that all such attempts of inventing own ways of understanding Lord Caitanya's philosophy, without following in the footsteps of the acaryas, would simply spoil the spirit of His cult.
- Srila Jiva Gosvami also warns that thinking oneself one of the associates of the Supreme without following in the footsteps of the gopis is as offensive as thinking oneself the Supreme. Such thinking is an aparadha.
The Ultimate Goal of the Śruti
The vast body of Vedic literature exists solely to guide the conditioned soul back to the Supreme Lord. Śrīla Prabhupāda concludes that no one can achieve spiritual perfection or enter the kingdom of God without explicitly following the process of Kṛṣṇa consciousness as laid down in the śrutis and smṛtis.
- Without following the principles of the scriptures, one cannot elevate himself to the perfectional stage. One who actually, therefore, understands the purport of the sastras is considered fortunate.
- In all the Vedic scriptures, faith in the Supreme is advised. In the pursuit of all Vedic instructions, the ultimate goal is the understanding of Krsna. No one can obtain success without following this principle.
- One cannot be a pure devotee without following the sruti and smrti, and the sruti and smrti without devotional service cannot lead one to the perfection of life.
- Without following this process of Krsna consciousness, it is very difficult to overcome the ocean of darkness, maya.
Conclusion
To achieve the supreme destination of life, one must abandon the arrogant tendency to invent their own spiritual path. Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that true spiritual advancement is strictly dependent upon submission to authorized knowledge. Trying to comprehend the Absolute Truth or the intimate pastimes of Kṛṣṇa without following the regulative principles, the śāstras, and the bona fide ācāryas is a futile endeavor that causes severe disturbances in human society. A sincere seeker must recognize that the pure paramparā system is the only reliable lifeline in the material world. By humbly executing devotional service exactly as instructed by the great authorities, one overcomes all material illusions and successfully enters the eternal spiritual kingdom.
