Why the Liberated Soul Chooses to Serve Kṛṣṇa Completely Without Reason
Śrīla Prabhupāda explains the concept of acting without reason in two distinct ways. Spiritually, pure devotional service is performed without any material reason, meaning it is completely unmotivated and spontaneous. Materially, however, acting without reason refers to the foolish, destructive, and illogical behavior of those who lack Kṛṣṇa consciousness and ignore Vedic authority.
Unmotivated Devotional Service
The highest platform of spiritual life is ahaitukī bhakti, or unalloyed devotional service. Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that a pure devotee does not serve Kṛṣṇa for material gain, daily bread, or spiritual salvation; they serve simply out of spontaneous love without reason.
- The word ahaituki means "without reason." A pure devotee does not render loving service to the Personality of Godhead for any cause or for any benefit, material or spiritual. This is the first symptom of unalloyed devotion.
- Love is without reason. Even God does not supply me daily bread, I'll love God. That is love.
- In pure devotional service one simply serves the Supreme Personality of Godhead as a matter of duty, without reason and without being impeded by material conditions.
- The real thing is that we want satisfaction of our self, so if we want actually satisfaction of self then we shall take to this devotional service without being checked by any material condition or for without any material reason, then you shall be happy.
Faith Based on Reason and Logic
Although pure love is unmotivated, the philosophy of Kṛṣṇa consciousness is highly logical. Śrīla Prabhupāda assures intellectuals that accepting the Absolute Truth is not a matter of blind faith, but a deeply scientific process supported by reason, argument, and infallible authority.
- This KC, it is not a blind faith, it is based on reason, it is based on argument, it is based on philosophy, it is based on authority. So the faith required. If I purposely draw my faith without any reason, without any philosophy, then I am unfortunate.
- For logicians who want to accept only that which is proven through logic and argument, it is a fact that without logic and reason there can be no question of accepting the Absolute Truth.
- We are not very willing to perform austerities without good reason; therefore any man with a good scientific and philosophical mind, like your good self, must first appreciate what transcendental knowledge is.
- It is the misfortune of the living entity, certainly not without reason, that the influence of the material energy acts on his pure consciousness and eternal bliss.
Irrational Material Destructiveness
When society abandons God consciousness, it acts irrationally and destructively. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that envious, atheistic leaders and ordinary materialists frequently cause immense suffering, start wars, and kill innocent creatures completely without reason or Vedic sanction.
- Warmongering materialists always create fighting without reason.
- In this age it is very difficult to find such a head of state who is expert in killing the undesirables. Modern heads of state sit very nicely in their palaces and try without reason to kill innocent persons.
- The animal is also praja of the government. The trees are also praja of the government. So formerly nobody could slaughter an animal, nobody can cut even a tree without reason, without sanction by the Vedic injunction.
- He (the person in the second classs of men) cheats everyone to acquire money for his family and his self, and he becomes envious of others without reason. Such a person is thrown into the hell known as Raurava.
The Supreme Controller and Atheistic Envy
The perfect order of the universe cannot be a product of blind chance. Śrīla Prabhupāda uses basic logic to explain that just as every earthly activity has a controller, it is completely unreasonable to think the massive planets float in space without the supreme intelligence of the Lord, a fact that atheists enviously deny without reason.
- There is no reason to believe that all the gigantic planets float in space without the superior arrangement of a superior intelligence. This subject is clearly dealt with in the Bhagavad-gita - BG 15.13.
- In every field of activity we find some finite controller, so how can we deny the existence of an infinite controller in this creation? It is not without reason therefore that Caitanya Mahaprabhu particularly uses this word Jagadisa, Lord of the universe.
- The asuras or atheists, the demons, without reason or cause, are envious of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
- King Rahugana was proud of being king, and he felt he had the right to control the citizens as he liked, but actually he was engaging men in carrying his palanquin without payment, and therefore he was causing them trouble without reason.
Conclusion
To live a successful human life, one must elevate their consciousness through reason and philosophy. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the materialist, blinded by false ego, acts without reason by exploiting others, killing innocent animals, and denying the existence of the Supreme Controller. However, when a sincere person applies logic and philosophical inquiry, they naturally accept the authority of the Bhagavad-gītā and the Supreme Personality of Godhead. By taking up the process of Kṛṣṇa consciousness, the devotee eventually reaches a transcendental platform where their love for the Lord flows spontaneously and unconditionally—acting entirely without reason, free from any material motive, and experiencing eternal, unhampered bliss.
