Why Prabhupāda Tells His Disciples to Depend on Kṛṣṇa for Protection
In a world fraught with danger at every step, material methods of defense ultimately prove useless. Recognizing this reality, Śrīla Prabhupāda constantly trained his disciples to seek real security by taking full shelter of the Supreme Lord. He taught that by faithfully chanting the holy names, strictly following spiritual vows, and remaining within the safety of the devotee community, one becomes completely protected from the degrading forces of the material energy.
The Supreme Shelter of Kṛṣṇa and the Holy Name
There is no weapon or technology in the material world that can save a conditioned soul from the stringent laws of nature. Because the Supreme Lord is the ultimate controller, Śrīla Prabhupāda explained that only Kṛṣṇa can grant absolute immunity from suffering. He urged his disciples to enthusiastically chant the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra without offense, assuring them that this transcendental sound vibration directly invokes the Lord's presence and guarantees His supreme protection in all circumstances.
- If Krsna protects, who can kill? And, if Krsna kills, who can protect? So, if we are sincere servants, then Krsna will give us protection.
- Everyone of you should be thoroughly convinced of the power of the Hare Krsna mantra to protect you in all circumstances and chant accordingly at all times without offense.
- Go on chanting Hare Krishna at all costs and never mind these tribulations of maya. Go on chanting Hare Krishna. Krishna is in your heart. Pray to Him for your protection and soon all things will be adjusted.
- Don't be afraid if somebody tortures us, somebody teases us. We must go on with Krsna consciousness without any hesitation, and Krsna will give us protection. If you are more tortured, then Krsna will appear as Nrsimhadeva and give you all protection.
The Conditions for Receiving Protection
The mercy of the spiritual master and the Supreme Lord is causeless, but it must be properly received through the disciple's sincere endeavor. To maintain their spiritual strength, Śrīla Prabhupāda strictly required his followers to chant their daily rounds of japa, follow the regulative principles, and decorate their bodies with tilaka. He warned that if a devotee becomes neglectful or voluntarily invites the influence of māyā, the spiritual master cannot forcibly protect them against their own independent choices.
- Our strength is in following the regulative principles and chanting 16 rounds japa. Then Krsna will give you protection.
- The tiloks on the forehead and other parts of the body are symbolic representation of Radha Krishna Temples. In other words by marking tiloks on all parts of our body we become protected by the Lord from all sides.
- As your beloved spiritual master and father, it is my duty to give you all protection; but if you allow maya to act upon you without any resistance, then it is your own choice.
- You are welcome to take initiation, but if you are neglectful, if you want to make it a farce, that is your business. I cannot give you any protection.
Protection Through Association and the Ācāryas
Attempting to execute devotional service in isolation is a highly dangerous endeavor for a neophyte practitioner. To safeguard against the powerful illusions of Kali-yuga, Śrīla Prabhupāda instructed his disciples to always remain within the association of pure devotees. By living cooperatively in the temple and strictly following the footsteps of the previous ācāryas, devotees create an impenetrable fortress where the disciplic succession actively watches over and defends them.
- The best thing is therefore not to seek solitude in the beginning but to remain in the midst of pure devotees so that even there is attack of maya, their association will protect us.
- Bhakta-sane vasa. Tandera carane. We should live together as devotee and follow the footprints of the acaryas. Don't manufacture concoction. Then it will be spoiled. Simply try to follow. They'll protect. They'll give protection.
- This is the age of Kali which plunders away spiritual sense of the human being and it is only the Divine Grace of Lord Caitanya Who can protect us from all these dangerous pitfalls.
- When they chant and dance, I simply remember Bhaktivinoda Thakura. That's all. I pray to Bhaktivinoda Thakura, "Now they have come to your shelter. Give them protection." That's all. What can I do more? I cannot do anything more.
Establishing Social Protection Within the Society
A thriving spiritual institution must emulate the traditional Vedic model by offering physical, emotional, and spiritual care to all its members. With profound compassion, Śrīla Prabhupāda established clear social structures, mandating that husbands serve as perfect spiritual guides to protect their wives, and that the community as a whole protect the cows. Furthermore, he directed his managers to protect the general devotees from excessive mundane labor, ensuring they always had sufficient time to advance in Kṛṣṇa consciousness.
- The policy should be that all the women are given the utmost protection.
- It is the duty of husband to protect wife in every way from the onslaught of material nature, and he must act always as her spiritual guide by being perfect example of devotee.
- If you give the right protection to the cows, then they will give so much milk, that the ground of New Vrndavana will be muddy with milk.
- Our mission is to protect our devotees from unnecessary heavy work to save time for advancing in Krsna consciousness. This is our mission.
Fearless Reliance on the Lord in Preaching
Preaching the absolute truth in a world full of ignorance often invites opposition and severe challenges. Whether distributing books in the streets or legally defending temple properties, Śrīla Prabhupāda taught his followers to act boldly and take all necessary practical steps for self-defense. However, he emphasized that all such anxieties should be directed toward Kṛṣṇa's service, transforming mundane worry into pure bhakti as they fearlessly depended on the Lord for the ultimate result.
- The brainwash books are already there. Even if they stop externally, internally it will go on. Our first class campaign is book distribution. Go house to house. The real fighting is now. Krsna will give you all protection.
- Do it enthusiastically. Keep yourself pure. Nobody will be able to do any harm to you. Krsna will give you protection.
- Our point should be that we shall take all necessary steps for self-protection, depending the result on Krishna.
- When we are anxious how to protect a property, how to push on this movement, how people will take it, what line of action we shall take, this is also anxiety, but that anxiety is for Krsna. Therefore it is bhakti.
Conclusion
By taking shelter of the holy names and the disciplic succession, one transcends the perilous conditions of material existence. Throughout his teachings, Śrīla Prabhupāda established that true security is never achieved independently, but only through loving surrender and strict adherence to spiritual principles. Armed with this divine protection, his disciples were empowered to fearlessly confront the illusions of the modern age and broadly distribute the mercy of Lord Caitanya.
