Why Going Against God Leads the Soul into Bondage and Suffering
Going against God means resisting the very source of the soul's life, guidance, and protection. Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that the living being is meant to serve the Supreme Lord, but in material existence that natural service becomes covered by rebellion and false independence. When the soul acts against God's will, it becomes bound by material nature and forced to suffer the reactions of its choices. Real freedom begins when the living being stops defying Kṛṣṇa and accepts His supreme authority with devotion.
Material Life Begins With Revolt Against God
Material existence is not neutral; it is the condition of the soul that has turned away from service to the Supreme Lord. The living being remains within repeated birth and death because it resists the Lord's supremacy and tries to enjoy separately. This rebellion may appear as fruitive work, speculation, mystic ambition, or simple forgetfulness of God. In every form, the result is bondage, because the soul cannot become independent of Kṛṣṇa.
- All the living entities within this material world have revolted against the service of the Lord, and they remain within this material world as ever conditioned, nitya-baddha, taking birth again and again.
- Material existence is a life of revolt against the Supreme Personality of Godhead. There are many ways in which the living entities can manifest this spirit of revolt, such as engaging in fruitive activities, mental speculation, or mystic yoga to achieve material perfections.
- They (the living entities) have been conditioned from time immemorial because no one can trace out when the living entity, the part and parcel of the Supreme Lord, became rebellious against the supremacy of the Lord.
- The conditioned life of a living being is caused by his revolting against the Lord. There are men called deva, or godly living beings, and there are men called asuras, or demons, who are against the authority of the Supreme Lord.
Misusing Independence Brings Suffering
God gives the living being a minute independence, but that freedom is meant for loving service, not defiance. When the soul acts against the will of God, it must accept the consequences through material nature. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that suffering is not accidental; it follows the misuse of independence under divine law. The many grades of life show how desire and action shape the soul's bondage through karma.
- God has given you independence. If you do something wrong, against the will of God, then you must suffer. Therefore we find so many varieties of living entities, in different grades of life. That is due to misuse of independence.
- It is a common sense affair. The God has given you independence. If you do something wrong, against the will of God, then you must suffer. Therefore we find so many varieties of living entities. In different grades of life.
- If we do anything against the order of God, that is sinful. Just like in Bible also there are so many commandments that "You shall not do this," because they are sinful.
- The wrongdoer is misled by bad associates and by ill advice, which is against the established principles of the Lord's order, and thus he becomes subject to punishment.
Demoniac Mentality Rejects Divine Authority
The asura does not merely forget God; he actively resists the Lord's authority and the scriptures that reveal Him. Such a mentality may appear as atheistic propaganda, envy of religion, or anger toward devotional principles. The material world becomes burdened by those who defy the Supreme Lord and His devotees. This is why opposition to God leads not to liberation but to deeper ignorance and suffering.
- A demoniac person, being always against God's supremacy, does not like to believe in the scriptures.
- Foolish creatures, especially in this age of Kali, instead of knowing God scientifically, make propaganda against religious belief and the existence of God, even though they are always bound by God's laws by the symptoms of birth, death, old age and disease.
- Material world means full of criminals, or against God, or defying the authority of God. And the spiritual world? Everyone is accepting the supremacy of God.
- This is the philosophy of the Communists. "Why should you go to the church? Why should you go to the temple? Forget all these things. Work hard, earn money and enjoy life." But that is demonic. Because there is envy against God.
Offenses Against the Lord and Devotees Are Dangerous
To blaspheme the Lord or His devotees is spiritually destructive because it attacks the very path of devotion. A devotee may tolerate personal insult, but offenses against Viṣṇu and His servants require serious caution. Such offenses steal spiritual knowledge and can pull even a liberated soul back into material contamination. The devotee therefore protects the heart by avoiding blasphemy, opposing false conclusions, and honoring those who serve the Lord.
- He (one who is a candidate of easy journey to the Vaikuntha planets) never tolerates blasphemy against the Lord or His devotees.
- Sukadeva Gosvami tells Pariksit Maharaj, "My dear King, if a person, after hearing blasphemous propaganda against the Lord and His devotees, does not go away from that place, he becomes bereft of the effect of all pious activities."
- Prakasananda Sarasvati quoted a verse from Vedic literatures which states that when even a liberated soul commits an offense against the Supreme Lord, he again becomes a victim of material contamination.
- Offenders against the lotus feet of Lord Visnu cannot advance in spiritual knowledge. They are called mayayapahrta-jnana, or those whose knowledge has been stolen by the influence of illusion.
Devotees Tolerate Personally but Defend Devotion
A devotee is gentle and tolerant when personally disturbed, yet firm when God or His devotees are attacked. This is not ordinary anger but anger used in service to protect devotion from blasphemy and falsehood. The devotee's mercy also remains active, because even those who oppose God may be taught if they are innocent or receptive. Still, one should avoid useless argument with hardened atheists and use energy for loving God, serving devotees, and teaching the innocent.
- A devotee should be so advanced that in spite of being troubled by the asuras, he should tolerate, titiksavah, and still he should be kind upon him, not that "This man is talking against me, against God. Therefore I shall be angry and drive him away." No.
- If somebody insults me, I don't be angry. "All right, he insulted. I tolerate." But when you speak against God, when you say: "I am God," I shall beat you with shoes, I shall be so much angry. You see? That should be attitude of the devotee.
- In the case of their (personal defamation, curses, negligence) being performed against the Lord and His devotees, then the devotees take very strong action.
- We are concerned with three: with God, the devotees and the innocent. To love God, to make friendship with devotees and to teach the innocent. And those who are atheist, against God, avoid. Don't talk. Useless waste of time.
The Devotee Accepts God's Will as Mercy
The opposite of going against God is accepting His will as protection and blessing. A pure devotee does not complain against the Lord's mercy, even when externally placed in difficulty. This surrender frees the heart from revolt and restores the soul's natural position as servant of Kṛṣṇa. When one no longer acts against the Lord's order, life becomes guided by devotion rather than dragged by material nature.
- A pure devotee never complains against the mercy of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. A vivid example is Prahlada Maharaja.
- The devotee never goes against the will of the Lord; anything sent by God is a blessing for the devotee. Therefore Maharaja Pariksit was neither afraid of nor bewildered by such things. That is the sign of a pure devotee of the Lord.
- No one should do anything, eat anything, sacrifice anything or give anything in charity against the will of the Lord.
- Lord Visnu does not belong to this material creation but to the spiritual world. To misconceive Lord Visnu to have a material body or to equate Him with the demigods is the most offensive blasphemy against Lord Visnu.
Conclusion
Going against God leads the soul into bondage and suffering because the living being cannot become independent of the Supreme Lord. Rebellion may appear as atheism, envy, false philosophy, blasphemy, or disobedience, but all such attitudes keep the soul under material nature. Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that real freedom comes when the living being stops resisting Kṛṣṇa and accepts His will as mercy. The devotee's path is therefore clear: love God, honor His devotees, teach the innocent, avoid hardened atheism, and live in service rather than revolt.
