Why Even Fear Itself Is Afraid of God
Fear dominates material existence because the conditioned soul identifies with the temporary body and forgets its eternal relationship with Kṛṣṇa. The Supreme Personality of Godhead controls all cosmic powers, including time, destruction, and death itself, causing even mighty beings to tremble before Him. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that while atheistic and materialistic persons fear the Lord’s authority, surrendered devotees attain abhaya, transcendental fearlessness, by taking shelter of His lotus feet. Thus the same Supreme Lord who terrifies the demoniac becomes the eternal refuge of His devotees.
Fear Before the Supreme Controller
All beings within the material universe remain subordinate to the Supreme Lord’s will. Even celestial powers, destructive forces, and cosmic beings cannot escape His authority. The awareness of this supreme control creates fear in those who resist or oppose divine supremacy.
- Although Rahu attempts to attack both the sun and the moon, they are protected by Lord Visnu. Being very afraid of Lord Visnu's cakra, Rahu cannot stay in front of the sun or moon for more than a muhurta - forty-eight minutes.
- The conclusion is, therefore, that everyone is under the control of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, everyone is serving under the supreme direction of the Lord, and everyone is afraid of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
- The tumultuous thundering sound was proof of the Lord's presence. The demons like Hiranyakasipu could now realize the supreme ruling power of the Lord, and thus Hiranyakasipu became afraid.
- Hiranyakasipu was very much afraid of Visnu's becoming an animal to kill him because his brother had been killed by Visnu when the Lord took the shape of a boar. He was therefore very careful to guard against all kinds of animals.
Devotees Attain Abhaya Through Surrender
Material fear disappears when one understands the Lord as the eternal protector of the surrendered soul. Through bhakti, the devotee transcends anxiety born from bodily identification and develops unwavering faith in divine protection. Fear itself becomes powerless before one who fully depends upon Kṛṣṇa.
- Although the time factor is fearful to everyone, fear personified is afraid of the Supreme Lord, who is therefore known as abhaya, fearless. Taking shelter of God brings actual fearlessness, and therefore the demigods decided to take shelter of the Lord.
- As soon as one becomes a devotee of the Lord, he is convinced that he is protected by the Lord. Fear itself is afraid of the Lord; therefore, what has he to do with fearfulness.
- My dear Lord, all actually learned persons know You as the Supreme Brahman and the Supersoul. Although the entire universe is afraid of Lord Rudra, who ultimately annihilates everything, for the learned devotees You are the fearless destination of all.
- One can vanquish them (evil stars, evil witches and evil spirits) simply by uttering Lord Visnu's name, for when Lord Visnu's name resounds, all of them become afraid and go away - SB 10.6.27-29.
The Devotee Fears Material Bondage, Not the Lord
Advanced devotees understand that the real danger is not the Lord’s fierce transcendental forms but entanglement in material existence and forgetfulness of Kṛṣṇa. Even when the Lord appears in awe-inspiring manifestations, devotees perceive His protective līlā and remain spiritually secure through devotion.
- Prahlada Maharaja, while praying to Lord Nrsimha, said, O my Lord, I am very much afraid of the materialistic way of life, and I am not the least afraid of Your present ghastly ferocious feature as Nrsimhadeva.
- When the Lord appeared in great anger to kill Hiranyakasipu, everyone was extremely afraid of the Lord's attitude, but Lord Siva, knowing very well that the Lord's anger is also His lila, was not afraid.
- Such pastimes as those of Nrsimhadeva are certainly not meant to create a fearful situation for the devotees, but nonetheless the devotees, being very simple and faithful, were afraid of the fierce incarnation of the Lord.
- In this (master-servant relationship) stage the servant is always afraid of the master and respectful of Him - Lord.
Conclusion
These teachings reveal that fear originates from separation from Kṛṣṇa and attachment to temporary material existence. Demons, impersonalists, and materialistic persons become fearful before the Lord’s supreme authority, whereas devotees attain abhaya by surrendering unto Him through bhakti. Śrīla Prabhupāda consistently explains that the Lord’s fierce forms and supreme power are terrifying only to those opposed to divine truth, while surrendered souls perceive the same manifestations as protective expressions of transcendental līlā and mercy.
