Where Is Kṛṣṇa - Love in Separation and Divine Longing
The inquiry into the whereabouts of Kṛṣṇa is not a mundane quest for information but the deepest cry of the soul in love. Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that the ultimate perfection of Kṛṣṇa consciousness is found in the mood of separation, where the devotee is so absorbed in the Lord's beauty and pastimes that they feel a constant, agonizing longing to see Him. This longing is the hallmark of the highest transcendental love, as demonstrated by the life of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, who lived in constant separation from Kṛṣṇa. By focusing our consciousness on this divine search, we transcend material forgetfulness and enter the spiritual reality.
The Mood of Divine Separation
The highest stage of devotional service is characterized by the feeling of separation from the Lord. For the advanced devotee, the desire to see Kṛṣṇa is so intense that the heart breaks at the thought of even a moment's separation. Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that the true teachers of bhakti never claim to have finished their search; instead, they remain in a state of humble, desperate longing, constantly asking, "Where is Kṛṣṇa?"
- Caitanya Mahaprabhu said, "Where has My Krsna gone? I saw Him just now, and His beauty has captivated My eyes and mind."
- My dear friend, where is Krsna, who is like the moon rising from the ocean of Maharaja Nanda's dynasty? Where is Krsna, His head decorated with a peacock feather? Where is He? Where is Krsna, whose flute produces such a deep sound.
- Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu used to lament by saying, "Where is Sri Krsna, whose form is curved in three places? Where is the sweet song of His flute, and where is the bank of the Yamuna?"
- My dear friend, where is Krsna? Kindly let Me see Him. My heart breaks at not seeing His face even for a moment. Kindly show Him to Me immediately; otherwise I cannot live.
Searching Like Madmen in Vṛndāvana
The Gosvāmīs of Vṛndāvana, as direct followers of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, set the perfect example of how to search for Kṛṣṇa. Their lives were consumed by the ocean of transcendental feelings, constantly crying out to Radha and Kṛṣṇa. They did not consider themselves to have achieved success in meeting the Lord; rather, they found their mission in the perpetual, heart-wrenching search, which is the very essence of kṛṣṇa-bhajana.
- In their mature stage of love of Godhead, when they were living in Vrndavana, the gosvamis would also cry - Radharani, where are You? Where are Your associates? Where are You, O son of Nanda? Where are you all. In this way they were searching after Krsna.
- In this way (by searching after and crying, "Where are You? Where are You Radharani? Where are You Krsna? Are You there by Govardhana Hill?"), throughout the whole tract of Vrndavana, the gosvamis were crying and searching after Radha and Krsna like madmen.
- Srinivasacarya said that the Gosvamis were always absorbed in the ocean of transcendental feelings in the mood of the gopis. When they lived in Vrndavana they were searching for Krsna, crying, "Where are You, Krsna?"
- The Gosvamis cried, "O gopis, where are You? Where are You, Srimati Radharani?" They never said, "We have now seen Radha and Krsna, and therefore our mission is fulfilled." Their mission remained always unfulfilled; they never met Radha and Krsna.
Finding Kṛṣṇa Within the Heart
While the devotee searches for Kṛṣṇa in the holy land of Vṛndāvana, they also come to realize that Kṛṣṇa is situated within their own heart. This realization is the core of the yoga system. When the heart is purified through devotional service, the devotee does not need to look far; the Supreme Lord is present as the eternal witness and beloved, waiting to be rediscovered through constant remembrance and service.
- Krsna is there, everyone's heart. Isvarah sarva-bhutanam hrd-dese 'rjuna tisthati (BG 18.61). Krsna is not far away. But you have to search out where is Krsna within your heart. That is called yoga.
- Krsna says, "I am not in the abode in the spiritual sky, nor am I in the heart of the yogi." Then where are You? Krsna says, "I stay where My pure devotees are chanting My glories." That is Vrndavana.
- Prahlada Maharaja, being always absorbed in thoughts of Krsna, sometimes felt separation, thinking, "Where is Krsna.
The Material Versus the Spiritual World
The material world is characterized by the forgetfulness of Kṛṣṇa, which leads to suffering and the cycle of repeated birth and death. In contrast, the spiritual world is defined simply by the presence of Kṛṣṇa and the constant remembrance of Him. To transcend the material condition, we must train our minds so that, even while living in this world, we remain in constant touch with Kṛṣṇa, looking for Him in every situation and dedicating our time to His service.
- If we always think of Krsna or become fully Krsna conscious, we can be promoted to the planet of Goloka Vrndavana, where Krsna eternally lives.
- The spiritual world is that place where Krsna is not forgotten. That is also the definition of the spiritual world given by Vedic literatures. We must therefore plan our lives in such a way that it will not be possible for us to forget Krsna for a moment.
- This world is material because God is forgotten here, but once He is remembered the world immediately becomes spiritual. In other words, the spiritual world is that place where Krsna is not forgotten.
- If we are serious of being transferred to the place where Krsna is, then we have to train up the mind so nicely that at the time of death I can remember Krsna.
The Atheistic Versus the Theistic Temperament
Atheistic persons frequently challenge the reality of the Divine by demanding proof of Kṛṣṇa's location. This is a material approach that defies the Lord. Conversely, the theistic person, recognizing that Kṛṣṇa is not subject to material limitations, constantly seeks Him with eyes of love. They understand that to meet Kṛṣṇa, one must move beyond sense gratification and surrender to the process of devotional service, for it is only through such surrender that the Lord reveals Himself.
- Sometimes when bhakti-yoga, Krsna consciousness, is preached to the common man, people argue, "Where is Krsna? Where is God? Can you show Him to us?" In this verse (SB 8.3.26) the answer is given.
- Why you should chant Hare Krsna? Where is Krsna? Where is God? - This is the atheistic temperament. They'll simply defy God, or Krsna. So the atheistic and the theistic persons are always there. But the theistic persons, they see always God.
- That love is being shown by Caitanya Mahaprabhu: "Where is Krsna? Where is Krsna?" That's Radharani's separation, love in separation. So love means without any return, without any sense gratification, without any consideration.
- Virahena, always feeling separation of Krsna, this is Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s teaching. Not that "I have got now Krsna." No. Caitanya Mahaprabhu never said. His direct disciples, the Gosvamis, they simply begged separation: Where is Krsna?
Conclusion
The search for Kṛṣṇa is the eternal occupation of the soul. As we progress in our devotional life, we learn that this search is not a movement across space, but a deepening of our internal dedication. Whether we are crying for His association or serving His devotees, our goal is to reach that state where Kṛṣṇa is never forgotten. Through the mercy of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and the guidance of the Gosvāmīs, we can align our lives with this sublime path of separation and longing, ensuring that our final destination is the eternal abode of the Lord.
