We Cannot Understand Kṛṣṇa Superficially
A central theme in Vedic philosophy is the vast difference between mundane familiarity and transcendental realization. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that simply knowing the historical details of Lord Kṛṣṇa's appearance and activities is a superficial level of understanding. While auspicious, it is not enough to stop the cycle of birth and death. To achieve actual spiritual perfection, one must comprehend Kṛṣṇa tattvataḥ—in absolute truth.
The Danger of Superficiality
If we approach the Supreme Lord with mundane vision, we risk committing the grave offense of equating Him with ordinary mortals. Śrīla Prabhupāda warns that merely knowing the geographical or familial details of Kṛṣṇa's incarnation is insufficient knowledge, as it often leads people to wrongly conclude that He is just a powerful human being.
- Simply superficially if we understand Krsna that: Krsna was born of the father & mother, Devaki and Vasudeva, He was born in Mathura & then played with the gopis and He taught something on the Battlefield of Kuruksetra - that is not sufficient knowledge.
- Krsna consciousness means you understands what is Krsna. Otherwise, if we superficially try to understand Krsna, we will understand Krsna is an ordinary human being.
- To understand superficially Krsna that, "He appeared in Mathura in His uncle's prison house," that is also nice. But one should try to understand Krsna in fact and that can be revealed by devotional service. You cannot challenge Krsna. Krsna will reveal.
Understanding Kṛṣṇa Tattvataḥ
To know the Supreme Lord in truth (tattvataḥ) means to understand Him exactly as He presents Himself, without whimsical interpretation. This scientific knowledge is not achieved through mental gymnastics, but must be received through the authorized disciplic succession (paramparā) and practically realized through the process of bhakti-yoga.
- If you understand Krsna tattvatah, in truth, not superficially, not whimsically, not according to your idea - parampara - then your life is perfect.
- Tattvatah means in truth, not superficially. If you understand Krsna in truth, as He is speaking Himself about Himself. If you simply accept Krsna, what He says, if you follow, then you become perfect and you become fit for going back to Godhead.
- To understand Krsna superficially, that is not sufficient. That is also good, but you must have tattvatah, what is Krsna actually. That knowledge can be achieved - bhaktya, by this krsna-yoga.
The Liberating Power of True Knowledge
The result of understanding Kṛṣṇa tattvataḥ is immediate and profound. As confirmed in the Bhagavad-gītā (4.9), anyone who genuinely grasps the divine, transcendental nature of the Lord's birth and activities transcends the material world. Upon leaving their current body, they are permanently freed from the cycle of reincarnation.
- In truth, not superficially, if you understand Krsna, then tyaktva deham punar janma naiti (BG 4.9): after giving up this body, you'll not have to accept another material body. That is samsiddhim paramam gatah. That is highest perfection of life.
- Not to understand superficially but to understand tattvatah. Then you are liberated immediately. Tyaktva deham punar janma naiti.
- It is very difficult to understand Krsna tattvatah, not superficially, but in fact. So Krsna says, janma karma me divyam yo janati tattvatah. So one who understands Krsna in truth, he becomes free. Tyaktva deham punar janma naiti mam eti kaunteya.
- If we understand why Bhagavan appears as the son of Devaki, then you become liberated. Bhagavan says, janma karma ca me divyam yo janati tattvatah (BG 4.9). You have to learn it tattvatah, in truth, not superficially.
The Supreme Origin
A critical component of knowing Kṛṣṇa in truth is recognizing His position as the absolute source of all existence. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that true realization involves understanding that the Supreme Personality of Godhead (Bhagavān) is the original foundation of both the localized Paramātmā and the all-pervading Brahman effulgence.
- Krsna says, aham sarvasya prabhavah (BG 10.8). Sarvasya, or Brahman, Paramatma, and Bhagavan. The Bhagavan is the origin of Paramatma and Brahman. Brahmanah aham pratistha. So in this way we have to understand what is Krsna, not superficially.
- Tattva-darsinah means one has seen the truth, not superficially knowing. One who understood that - This is the truth, so go there and submit there.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that a superficial understanding of Kṛṣṇa is fundamentally insufficient for spiritual emancipation. While it is auspicious to know the historical facts of His appearance and pastimes, viewing Him as an ordinary human figure prevents true realization. The ultimate perfection of human life requires understanding Kṛṣṇa tattvataḥ—in absolute truth. This profound realization cannot be achieved through mental speculation or whimsical interpretation, but only through the authorized paramparā and the process of pure devotional service (bhakti-yoga). By sincerely applying oneself to this transcendental process, the Lord reveals His true position as the absolute origin of everything, and the devotee achieves immediate liberation, never to take birth in the material world again.
