We Become Advanced in Kṛṣṇa Consciousness When Devotional Service Replaces Material Desire
Advancement in Kṛṣṇa consciousness is not a matter of prestige, imitation, or external appearance. Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that real progress is seen when material desire weakens and devotional service becomes the devotee's only business. The heart becomes less interested in sense enjoyment and more eager to serve Kṛṣṇa at every moment. When service replaces material desire, the devotee becomes steady, humble, compassionate, and able to see Kṛṣṇa's presence everywhere.
Detachment From Material Desire Is the Test
The first clear sign of progress is that material attraction begins to lose its charm. A devotee can examine the heart honestly and ask whether the old taste for material life is still strong. Advancement does not mean pretending to be elevated; it means becoming actually detached from lust, greed, and fruitive desire. When devotional service becomes sweeter, material enjoyment naturally becomes distasteful.
- Advancement of Krsna consciousness means he's no more interested with anything material. That is Krsna conscious.
- How much one has advanced in Krsna consciousness one can test himself, that "How much I have become detestful, all this material way of life?" Everyone can test himself. If he has got still some inclination, then he is not fully Krsna conscious.
- If anyone is advancing by meditation or bhakti-yoga or Krsna consciousness, one has to give evidence that he is now being proportionately detached from this material engagement. That is the test.
- If we want to cheat others, that is a different thing, that "I have become very advanced in Krsna consciousness." That is another thing, cheating. But you test yourself by this process, whether you are free from lust and greediness. This is the test.
Every Moment Should Be Used for Service
Advanced life means anxiety that no moment be wasted away from devotional service. The devotee understands that life is temporary, so time becomes sacred. This does not create dry tension; it creates eagerness to remember Kṛṣṇa, serve Kṛṣṇa, and avoid useless distraction. Śrīla Prabhupāda presents this careful use of time as a practical sign of genuine progress.
- Advanced life in Krsna Consciousness means one should be always very much anxious to calculate whether every moment of his life has not been utilized in devotional service. This is called feeling of being afraid for misusing time.
- Life is transient; therefore the devotee wants to utilize every moment for the advancement of Krsna consciousness.
- When a person is advanced in Krishna Consciousness he should always think that my time may not go in vain without being engaged in Krishna's service.
- Don't create a situation that "I am this. I am that." Simply create a situation that you completely understand that "I have no other business than to advance in Krsna consciousness, and my only duty is to serve Krsna." This is wanted.
Humility and Offenseless Conduct Protect Progress
Advancement becomes unsafe when pride appears. A devotee who thinks, “I am advanced,” risks imitation, carelessness, and offense. The safe mood is to continue acting humbly, even if realization has developed. Offense to a Vaiṣṇava is especially dangerous, because it prevents advancement from bearing fruit.
- A devotee who is actually advanced in Krsna consciousness, who is constantly engaged in devotional service, should not manifest himself even though he has attained perfection.
- The idea is that he (a devotee who is actually advanced in Krsna consciousness) should always continue to act as a neophyte devotee as long as his material body is there.
- Unnecessary pride is very bad. "Oh, I have become very advanced in Krsna consciousness." That we should never think.
- Lord Caitanya taught everyone that although one may be very much advanced in Krsna consciousness, if one offends the lotus feet of a Vaisnava his advancement will not bear fruit. We should therefore be very cautious not to offend a Vaisnava.
Kṛṣṇa Becomes Visible Everywhere
As consciousness becomes purified, the devotee no longer sees the world as separate from Kṛṣṇa. The Deity, scripture, water, sunlight, sound, and every situation can awaken remembrance of Him. This vision is not imagination, but the natural result of spiritual qualification. In the advanced stage, matter and spirit are understood in relation to Kṛṣṇa, and everything becomes an opportunity for service.
- In the advanced stage of Krsna consciousness, one does not therefore make such distinctions (between matter and spirit). He sees Krsna only in everything.
- In the advanced stage of Krsna consciousness, one makes no such distinctions. He sees only Krsna in everything.
- The stage of awareness of Krsna can be attained when one is advanced in Krsna consciousness. Then one can understand that Krsna is present in the Deity, in Bhagavad-gita, in the taste of water, in the sunshine, in the moonshine and in all sound.
- The conception of the falsity of this material world is due to a lack of knowledge, but a person advanced in Krsna consciousness sees the Supreme Personality of Godhead in everything.
Advancement Awakens Compassion and Preaching
A person advanced in Kṛṣṇa consciousness does not seek only private salvation. Compassion naturally grows because the devotee sees the suffering of living beings in material existence. Preaching then becomes a symptom of maturity, not ambition. One who knows Kṛṣṇa wants others to receive the same shelter, service, and freedom from illusion.
- One who is interested in his own salvation is not as advanced in Krsna consciousness as one who feels compassion for others and who therefore propagates the Krsna consciousness movement.
- When a person is advanced in spiritual consciousness or Krsna consciousness, he naturally becomes very sympathetic toward all living entities suffering in the material world. Naturally such an advanced person thinks of the suffering of people in general.
- When you become advanced in Krsna conscious, then your natural tendency will be how to preach. So long you do not develop this tendency for preaching, simply remain in kanistha-adhikari, you do not know how to deliver others.
- If you become advanced in Krishna Consciousness, you will be able to cure the disease of the soul for many many persons. And that is more important than a doctor or medical practitioner for curing the disease of this body.
Advanced Practice Requires Proper Guidance
Higher stages of Kṛṣṇa consciousness must be approached carefully. A sincere devotee follows the spiritual master, associates with devotees, and avoids imitating exalted personalities like Haridāsa Ṭhākura. Confidential subjects such as rāsa-līlā are not for casual discussion, because immature hearing can become misunderstanding. Real advancement means receiving guidance from guru, devotees, and scripture, not acting independently.
- One who is serious about spiritual life is given by Krsna the intelligence to come in contact with a bona fide spiritual master, and then by the grace of the spiritual master one becomes advanced in Krsna consciousness.
- Without the association of devotees, one cannot advance in Krsna consciousness. Therefore, we have established the International Society for Krishna Consciousness. Factually, whoever lives in this society automatically develops Krsna consciousness.
- Unless one is extremely advanced in Krsna consciousness, one should not imitate Haridasa Thakura, who had no other business than chanting the holy name always, twenty-four hours a day.
- We should not discuss the rasa-lila generally. Because unless one is advanced in spiritual consciousness and Krsna consciousness, they should not try to understand what is rasa-lila. It is very confidential. It is meant for the liberated souls.
Conclusion
Devotional service replaces material desire when the heart becomes serious about Kṛṣṇa. Detachment, careful use of time, humility, compassion, and proper guidance all reveal whether advancement is real. Śrīla Prabhupāda directs us to test progress honestly, avoid Vaiṣṇava offense, and serve without wasting even a moment. When Kṛṣṇa consciousness matures in this way, the devotee sees Kṛṣṇa everywhere and naturally works to help others return to Him.
