Vote - The Illusion of Modern Democracy
Śrīla Prabhupāda provides a sharp critique of the modern democratic system, where unqualified leaders are granted immense power simply by collecting votes from an equally untrained public. He contrasts this democracy with the Vedic standard of trained kṣatriya kings. Furthermore, he strictly applies this principle to spiritual life, warning that the Supreme Personality of Godhead, His incarnations, and genuine spiritual masters are recognized by the authority of the śāstras, never by the cheap votes of the masses.
The Blind Voting for the Blind
Democracy relies on the wisdom of the masses, but when the masses are spiritually ignorant, the system fails. Śrīla Prabhupāda vividly compares the voting public to small animals electing a larger, more powerful animal to lead them. Because the voters lack spiritual vision, they consistently elect unqualified rascals.
- A man less than an animal is allowed to cast votes for another less-than-animal man.
- The Bhagavata says, sva-vi-varahostra-kharai samstutah. Here is one big animal, and the small animals voting him. That's all. This is the society, animal society.
- The so-called democracy is no good. Because democracy means by votes. So the votes are given by the rascal sudras. So what is the meaning of electing somebody if the vote-givers are also rascal and fool, and the vote-taker is a big food, big rascal.
- We don't very much like this so-called democracy. What is the value of this democracy? All fools and rascals. They vote another fool and rascal, and he becomes prime minister, or this or that.
Leaders Without Training
In Vedic culture, a king was a highly trained kṣatriya guided by expert brāhmaṇas. Today, administrative posts are captured by anyone who can manipulate public opinion. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that without proper training in spiritual culture and military defense, these elected officials act as śūdras, leading to corruption and exploitation.
- In a democracy no one is trained like a prince; instead, politicians are voted to responsible posts of administration by diplomatic arrangements.
- The word ksatra-bandhu refers to the so-called administrators or persons promoted to the post of the administrator without proper training by culture and tradition. Nowadays they are promoted to such exalted posts by the votes of the people.
- Simply by manipulation, if one gets vote, he captures the governmental power. Sudra. He's a sudra. He is not a ksatriya like Maharaja Yudhisthira, trained up ksatriya.
- Now the fault is without being trained, simply by votes one becomes prime minister or home minister, he has no training how to administer, but simply by vote, he occupies a big post. And that is his qualification.
God is Not Manufactured
The tendency to elect leaders has dangerously spilled over into spiritual life. Śrīla Prabhupāda vehemently opposes the modern practice of "voting" someone into the position of God or a mahātmā. The Supreme Lord and His authorized incarnations are confirmed exclusively by their symptoms as described in the Vedic scriptures.
- Arjuna said: "You are personally speaking, and I have realized that You are the Supreme Personality of Godhead." This is Krsna. Krsna is not manufactured, as nowadays it has become a fashion to manufacture God by votes. No.
- How one becomes God? God is not manufactured by vote. There are definition who is God. God must be the proprietor of all the riches, aisvaryasya samagrasya. Samagra means all. Nobody can compete with Him.
- One cannot manufacture a God by one's mental speculation or by numerical votes, as has become a practice for the less intelligent class of men.
- Similarly (how children play), many foolish persons, due to ignorance, select another fool as God, and then the rascal actually considers himself God, as if God could be created by childish play or by the votes of men.
The Independence of the Vaiṣṇava Ācārya
Just as the Supreme Lord is not elected, His pure representative, the spiritual master, cannot be chosen by a mundane committee or court of law. Śrīla Prabhupāda establishes that a genuine Vaiṣṇava ācārya is self-effulgent. His authority comes entirely from his strict adherence to the disciplic succession, not from popular votes.
- A disciple of Kali cannot become an acarya by the decision of some high-court. Mundane votes have no jurisdiction to elect a Vaisnava acarya. A Vaisnava acarya is self-effulgent, and there is no need for any court judgment.
- A really cultured learned fellow is far above a politician. Because a politician is honoured by the votes of his countrymen while a cultured and learned fellow is honoured everywhere all over the world.
- The Absolute Truth is scientific knowledge. It is not sentiment - "I accept somebody as God by votes." That is not bhagavat-tattva-vijnanam. One must know what is the definition of God.
- Indirectly, Sanatana Gosvami asserted that there is no greater materialistic fool than one who advertises himself and collects the cheap votes of similar fools to gain fame as a great scholar, great leader, great philosopher, great mahatma.
Conclusion
In summary, Śrīla Prabhupāda warns that relying on the voting power of an untrained, materially absorbed public is a recipe for disaster. When the spiritually blind elect the spiritually blind, society is subjected to unqualified leaders who exploit their positions. More importantly, Śrīla Prabhupāda establishes that the democratic principle has absolutely no place in spiritual life. The Supreme Personality of Godhead, His empowered incarnations, and the genuine Vaiṣṇava ācāryas are recognized by authentic śāstric symptoms and their unwavering dedication to the absolute truth, completely independent of public opinion, mental concoction, or the numerical votes of the masses.
