Understanding the Divine Reason Behind God's Purpose
Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that the Supreme Personality of Godhead's activities are never whimsical; they are driven by supreme compassion and profound intention. By studying his instructions, we can understand the Lord's primary mission to protect devotees, His desire to distribute knowledge, His affectionate reciprocation, and His ultimate goal of liberating the conditioned souls.
The Primary Mission
The material world is often plagued by demonic forces that threaten the peaceful execution of spiritual life. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the primary purpose of the Supreme Lord's descent is to directly intervene—protecting His faithful servants while simultaneously annihilating the atheistic miscreants.
- As explained here (in CC Adi 17.53), the real purpose of an incarnation of Godhead is to kill the atheists and maintain the devotees.
- Lord Krsna appears in every millennium for two purposes, namely to deliver the devotees and to kill the nondevotees. His devotees also have two similar purposes-to preach the bhakti cult of Krsna consciousness and to defeat all kinds of agnostics and atheistic demons.
- The incarnations of the Supreme Personality of Godhead all function differently, but their main purpose is to protect the devotees and annihilate the miscreants. Yet even though the duskrtis, or miscreants, are annihilated, this is ultimately good for them.
- When the Lord appears in this universe in the form of a human being, He has two purposes, as stated in Bhagavad-gita (BG 4.8) - paritranaya sadhunam vinasaya ca duskrtam: to destroy the demons and protect the devotees.
Distributing Knowledge
Conditioned souls naturally forget their eternal relationship with the Supreme Lord over time. Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights that another vital purpose of God's appearance is to personally reestablish lost philosophical truths and guide humanity back to the path of unalloyed devotional service.
- Another purpose of His (the Lord) appearance is cikirsur bhagavan jnanam, to distribute knowledge.
- The purpose of the Lord's taking birth is to establish devotional service, which is the perfect system of religion, and the purpose of the birth of a devotee is to broadcast the same system of religion, or the bhakti cult, all over the world.
- Kapila said that the system of Sankhya philosophy was not exactly being introduced by Him; it was already current, but in course of time it was mysteriously lost and therefore He appeared to reintroduce it. That is the purpose of the incarnation of Godhead.
- The coherent purpose of Lord Ramacandra, Lord Krsna and Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu is to teach human society how to be happy by following the instructions of the Supreme Lord.
Fulfilling the Devotees' Desires
The Lord is completely self-sufficient and can accomplish anything simply by His will. However, Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that the Lord's most endearing purpose for descending is to satisfy the yearning of His pure devotees, who eagerly desire to witness His transcendental pastimes.
- The Lord has sufficient energies and agents who can vanquish atheists, but it pleases Him to personally favor a devotee. Therefore He descends as an incarnation. Actually, He descends only to favor His devotees and not for any other purpose.
- When He (God) appears, His main purpose is to give solace to His devotees.
- The Lord can fulfill many purposes through one action. Thus the killing of Hiranyakasipu and the saving of Prahlada were enacted simultaneously to prove the truthfulness of the Lord's devotee and the fidelity of the Lord Himself to His own purpose.
- Lord Ramacandra exhibits the actual purpose of an incarnation of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and the devotees take the opportunity to offer loving transcendental service to Him.
Bewildering to the Mundane Mind
The activities and appearances of the Supreme Lord are completely beyond the comprehension of ordinary, materially conditioned men. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that while the Lord’s descent in forms like a fish or a tortoise may seem astonishing or bewildering, He is all-powerful and acts solely to serve His divine transcendental purposes.
- Here (SB 1.8.29) it is said, na veda kascid bhagavams cikirsitam: "No one knows the purpose of Your appearance and disappearance." Tavehamanasya nrnam vidambanam: the Lord's pastimes are bewildering. No one can understand their real purpose.
- The primeval Lord, being all-powerful, can do whatever He likes, and therefore His assuming the incarnation of a tortoise or a fish for serving a particular purpose is not at all astonishing.
- If one argues, "What is the purpose of this sinful creation and annihilation?" the answer is that to prove His (the Supreme Lord's) omnipotence He can do anything, and no one can question Him.
- His activities are transcendental and are enacted for the understanding of all persons. Otherwise, since the Lord is transcendental to all material modes, what purpose could He serve by coming to earth?
Utilizing Energy for His Purpose
The entire material creation and its resources are meant exclusively for the Lord's service. Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that material energy is naturally subordinate to the Lord, and when we utilize everyday objects—like a microphone or a building—for God's purpose, they become spiritualized, freeing us from mundane entanglement.
- The material energy works according to His (God's) direction; therefore He can use that energy for His purposes without ever being influenced by any of the qualities of that energy. In this sense He is nirguna, "without qualities."
- This is a hall. It can be utilized for selling wine and it can be utilized for speaking about God. So the place is the same, but when it is utilized for God's purpose, then it is spiritual, and it is utilized for my sense gratification, that is material.
- This microphone can be utilized for so many purposes, and it can be utilized also God's purposes. I am speaking through this microphone about the message of God. So when it is utilized for God's purposes it is spiritual.
- Khatvanga Maharaja could not think of anything existing without the purpose of the Supreme Lord. Isavasyam idam sarvam: (ISO 1) everything is related to the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
The Goal of Liberation
The material manifestation is not created for God's sense gratification, but as a rehabilitative facility. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the ultimate purpose behind the creation and the Lord's descent is to help the conditioned souls dispel their ignorance, transcend material entanglement, and return to the spiritual world.
- If one understands the purpose of Krsna's coming to this earth and performing His activities, one is immediately liberated. This liberation is the purpose of the creation and Krsna's descent upon the surface of the earth.
- For this purpose (to reclaim His fallen sons) He (God) also exhibits the actual life in the transcendental world, which is characterized by relationships with Him in servitorship, friendship, parenthood, and consorthood.
- The living entities must get free from the superfluous coverings and fully engage in Krsna consciousness. The purpose of the appearance of Lord Caitanya and Lord Nityananda is to dispel the darkness of the soul.
- This material world is not for the purpose of the Lord Himself, but is for the conditioned souls who wanted to be controllers due to misuse of their God-gifted minute independence. Thus the conditioned souls are subjected to repeated birth and death.
Conclusion
Śrīla Prabhupāda masterfully illustrates that every action of the Supreme Personality of Godhead is imbued with supreme purpose and boundless compassion. Although the Lord's transcendental activities may sometimes bewilder the conditioned souls, they are always executed to maintain cosmic order and to demonstrate the path of bhakti-yoga. By descending into the material world, Śrī Kṛṣṇa simultaneously annihilates the demonic forces that disrupt society and offers profound solace to His pure devotees who constantly yearn for His association. Furthermore, the Lord reestablishes genuine religious principles, rescuing spiritual knowledge that has been lost to time. Ultimately, the entire cosmic manifestation and the Lord's appearances within it serve one grand, merciful purpose: to reclaim the rebellious living entities, cure them of their illusion, and invite them back to their eternal, blissful home in the spiritual sky.
