Understanding the Absolute Nature of God's Hands
One of the greatest philosophical pitfalls for spiritual seekers is the tendency to impose material limitations upon the Absolute Truth. When people read in the ancient scriptures that God is unlimited, they falsely conclude that He cannot possess a personal form, arguing that a form would limit Him. However, the Vedic literatures thoroughly reject this impersonalist conclusion. Śrīla Prabhupāda meticulously explains that while the Supreme Personality of Godhead does not possess a temporary, material body, He eternally possesses a fully conscious, spiritual form. His transcendental hands are not restricted by time, space, or biological laws. By understanding how the Vedas describe His absolute senses, how His all-pervasive hands manage the cosmos, the significance of the weapons He carries, and the profound mercy His touch delivers, we can properly appreciate the personal reality of the Supreme Lord.
The Absolute Nature of His Senses
When the śruti-mantras state that God has no hands or legs (apāṇi-pādo), impersonalists eagerly seize upon this to prove God is void. Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that this simply denies the existence of material hands. The Lord possesses absolute, spiritual hands, which possess unimaginable capabilities that completely defy material logic.
- The Vedic mantras say: the Supreme Lord has no legs and hands, but He can accept whatever is offered to Him. Such statements accept that God has hands and legs, but deny that He has material hands and legs. This is why the Absolute is called aprakrta.
- In the sruti-mantras it is also said that although the Lord has no hands and legs like ours, He has a different type of hands and legs, by which He can accept all that we offer Him and run faster than anyone.
- It is further stated that with each and every part of His body He can do the work of the other senses. This means that the Lord can walk with His hands, accept things with His legs, see with His hands and feet, eat with His eyes, etc.
- You pour water on the leg of the tree, it becomes very luxuriant, healthy. So different. And so far God is concerned, He can eat with legs; He can see with hands; He can eat with eyes. That is God.
The Hidden Hand Behind the Cosmos
Atheistic scientists proudly point to the physical laws of nature as the supreme cause of the universe. However, Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that a true devotee, guided by Kṛṣṇa consciousness, possesses the intelligence to see past the mechanical workings of nature and recognize the guiding, all-pervasive hand of the Supreme Lord behind every cosmic event.
- Krsna consciousness means a person who is Krsna conscious, he can see everything. He can see in everything the hand of God.
- Envious persons cannot see this, but a devotee, even though very humble and even if uneducated, knows that behind all the activities of nature is the supreme hand of the Supreme Being.
- Mayadhyaksena means "under My supervision." Material nature cannot act so wonderfully unless the Lord's hand is behind it.
- We should not consider like rascals that such a thing has come into being automatically. Fools cannot see, but those who are intelligent can see that the hand of the Supreme Lord is in everything within the creation. Isavasyam idam sarvam.
The Weapons and the Forms
In His majestic Vaikuṇṭha expansions, the Lord does not appear empty-handed. Śrīla Prabhupāda details how Lord Viṣṇu perpetually carries four specific items, and how the exact arrangement of these items in His four hands determines the identities of His twenty-four primary plenary expansions.
- His (Lord Visnu) four hands were decorated with a conchshell, club, lotus and disc, He was dressed in yellow garments, and His eyes appeared like the petals of a blooming lotus.
- The procedure for counting begins with the lower right hand and goes to the upper right hand, the upper left hand, and the lower left hand. Lord Visnu is named according to the order of the weapons He holds in His hands.
- Beginning from the lower right hand up and down to the lower left hand with lotus, wheel of a chariot, conchshell and club respectively - is called Janardana, or the plenary portion of the Lord who controls the general mass.
- These four forms again expand into three, and these all have different names, beginning with Kesava. These forms are 12 in all and they are known by different names according to the placement of symbols in their hands.
The Supreme Touch of Mercy
Whether the Lord is holding a weapon to annihilate a demon or raising His hand to bless a surrendered soul, His touch is the ultimate benediction. Śrīla Prabhupāda beautifully illustrates how the lotus hands of the Lord provide absolute fearlessness, cleanse away material desires, and grant the highest spiritual perfection.
- Raising Prahlada, the Lord placed His lotus hand upon the boy's head because His hand is always ready to create fearlessness in all of His devotees.
- By the touch of Lord Nrsimhadeva's hand on Prahlada Maharaja's head, Prahlada was completely freed of all material contaminations and desires, as if he had been thoroughly cleansed.
- He (Akrura) remained stunned in ecstasy, as if devoid of all powers to see and speak. Lord Krsna, who is very kind to His devotees, raised Akrura with His hand and embraced him. It appeared that Lord Krsna was very much pleased with Akrura.
- The demons killed by Lord Visnu's cakra disc and club are elevated to the spiritual world, just like the devotees who are protected by the hands holding the lotus flower and conchshell.
Conclusion
A systematic study of the Vedic literatures completely cures the conditioned soul of the demonic philosophy that the Supreme Truth is an impersonal, formless void. As Śrīla Prabhupāda clearly explains, the Supreme Personality of Godhead has an eternal, spiritual body (sac-cid-ānanda-vigraha). When the scriptures state that God has no hands, they are emphatically rejecting the idea that He is confined by temporary, material limbs. The absolute nature of the Lord means that His spiritual senses are entirely interchangeable; He does not require eyes to see, for He can see perfectly with His hands. Furthermore, the Lord is never absent from His creation. As the Supersoul, His hands and legs are distributed throughout the cosmos. An intelligent, Kṛṣṇa conscious person does not foolishly give ultimate credit to blind physical laws or mundane scientists; they clearly perceive the hidden hand of the Supreme Lord actively managing the entire universe. To govern the cosmos and attract the minds of His devotees, the Lord expands into magnificent personal forms. Lord Viṣṇu perpetually carries the conchshell, disc, club, and lotus in His four hands, and the specific permutation of these items identifies His twenty-four primary plenary expansions. Ultimately, the hands of the Lord are the absolute reservoirs of mercy and protection. Whether He is raising His hand to playfully bless a pure devotee like Prahlāda Mahārāja, lifting a mountain with one hand to protect the residents of Vṛndāvana, or even using His bare hands to tear apart a great demon like Hiraṇyakaśipu, the touch of the Supreme Lord instantly destroys all material contamination and grants eternal, spiritual liberation.
