Understanding Why Prakṛti Is Female in Vedic Science
The profound science of Sāṅkhya philosophy reveals the actual position of the living entities in relation to the Supreme Lord. By clearly defining the energetic principle, Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that Kṛṣṇa is the absolute puruṣa—the sole male enjoyer—while all other manifestations are His prakṛti, or female energy. Understanding this eternal truth shatters the illusion of material gender and reestablishes the soul as a humble servant of God.
The Supreme Male and the Energetic Principle
The foundational truth of Vedic wisdom establishes that the Supreme Personality of Godhead is the original male and the ultimate enjoyer of all sacrifices. In contrast, the diverse energies expanding from Him constitute the female principle, or prakṛti. This distinction, carefully elucidated by Śrīla Prabhupāda, dispels unauthorized concepts of a female God and confirms that Kṛṣṇa alone holds the position of the absolute puruṣa.
- Just like here we have got conception of male and female, similarly, originally, God and His energy, God is male and energy female, prakrti and purusa.
- In the Bhagavad-gita Arjuna recognized Krsna as purusa. Purusam sasvatam adyam. So He's the purusa. God is purusa, male. God is not female. The sakti, that is female, prakrti.
- Tvam adyah purusah. Purusa means enjoyer. God is not female. Sometimes they worship a female as God, like Durga, Kali, and so many others. But God is purusa. Everyone is prakrti. Prakrti means female. Everyone knows it.
- The conception of female God, that is not authorized. Paramah puman yo. So female is prakrti, nature.
- Male and female-two parts required, negative and positive. So the male part is Bhagavan, and the female part is the prakrti, and combination of purusa and prakrti is the varieties of creation. This is Sankhya philosophy.
- What is the experience of Arjuna? Arjuna said: "You are . . . you are the Supreme Person, purusam. You are not female. You are not prakrti. You are purusa, sasvata, and the original, sasvatam, eternally." Not that, the Mayavadis, - Now impersonal.
The Material Elements as the Inferior Energy
The visible world composed of earth, water, fire, air, ether, mind, intelligence, and false ego is entirely an expansion of the Lord's separated, inferior energy. Because matter is inert and meant to be manipulated, it is designated as a female principle that requires the touch of the supreme male to become active. Elaborating on this dynamic, Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that without the powerful association of the puruṣa, the cosmic manifestation of prakṛti cannot produce anything.
- After describing the material energy, bhumir apo analo vayuh (BG 7.4), earth, water, air, fire, this material energy is also female, prakrti.
- In the Bhagavad-gita, Krsna says that these material elements - earth, water, air, fire, mind, intelligence, ego - they are bhinna me prakrti astadha (BG 7.4). Prakrti. He is purusa. Prakrti means female. So they are also all energy.
- Matter is called prakrti, which refers to female energy. A woman is prakrti, a female. A female cannot produce a child without the association of a purusa, a man.
- Krsna has explained this material world, bhumir apah analo vayuh. This is also nature, prakrti. There is another nature, prakrti. Prakrti means stri-linga, woman. Jiva-bhuta, the living entities, are not mentioned in this connection as purusa. Not purusa.
The Living Entities as the Superior Energy
Beyond the dull material elements exists a superior spiritual energy consisting of all conscious living entities. Known as the jīva-bhūta, these souls are also categorized as prakṛti, meaning they are constitutionally female and meant to be enjoyed by the Lord. By understanding this relationship through the teachings of Śrīla Prabhupāda, the living entity realizes the sheer impossibility of merging into the Absolute and becoming one with the supreme male.
- In the Bhagavad-gita it is said, apareyam itas tu viddhi me prakrtim para jiva-bhutam maha-baho (BG 7.5). Prakrti means female, enjoyed. So jiva is described in the Bhagavad-gita as prakrti. The first prakrti is the material elements, eight.
- Jiva-bhuta, the living entities, they have been described as prakrti, and prakrti means female. And Krsna has been described as purusa. So purusa is the enjoyer, and prakrti is the enjoyed.
- Enjoyed means prakrti, or female, and enjoyer means the purusa, or the male. So actually, we all living entities, we are prakrti - we are not purusa. That is stated in the Seventh Chapter.
- One day Vallabha Bhatta said to Advaita Acarya, "Every living entity is female (prakrti) and considers Krsna her husband (pati)."
- One with the Supreme, how it is possible? The Supreme is purusa and I am prakrti. So there must be difference between purusa and prakrti. The prakrti cannot . . . a female cannot artificially become a male. That is not possible.
The Illusion of Material Gender
Within the material sphere, conditioned souls falsely identify with temporary bodily dresses, thinking themselves to be men or women. Regardless of these physical forms, every living entity is fundamentally female in nature and cannot act as a true enjoyer. Highlighting the danger of this false ego, Śrīla Prabhupāda points out that the artificial desire to conquer and exploit material nature only deepens the bondage of the jīva.
- Somebody is dressed like a female, somebody is dressed like a male, but none of them are male. Both of them are originally female, prakrti. Prakrti means feminine gender.
- The attraction between man and woman is the cause of bondage for both. Actually both belong to the para prakrti, the superior energy of the Lord, but both are actually prakrti - female.
- We have got little conception, male and female. So prakrti means the female, the object of enjoyment, and purusa means the enjoyer. So here, although we are dressed in a different way, male or female, everyone is trying to enjoy.
- The opposite number is, mahat-sevam dvaram ahur vimuktes tamo-dvaram yositam sangi-sangam. Yosit. Yosit means enjoyable, female, or prakrti.
The Supreme Husband and His Controlled Energy
In the ultimate spiritual reality, the Supreme Lord acts as the only true husband, providing protection and maintenance for everyone. Just as a faithful wife voluntarily submits to the guidance of her husband, the female energy naturally remains under the perfect control of God. Through this beautiful analogy, Śrīla Prabhupāda illustrates that the living entities find their ultimate peace when they accept Kṛṣṇa as their supreme shelter and protector.
- Krsna is the real husband not only of the gopis, but of every living entity. Everyone should perfectly understand that Krsna is the real husband of all living entities, who are described in the Bhagavad-gita as prakrti (female), not purusa (male).
- Krsna is the real husband of all living entities, who are described as prakrti (female), not purusa (male).
- The Lord provides everyone with his quota. Actually, however, every living entity is prakrti, or female, and Krsna is the only husband.
- Prakrti is always under control, whether inferior or superior. Prakrti is female, and she is controlled by the Lord just as the activities of a wife are controlled by the husband.
- Prakrti means which is controlled, which is under... Real meaning of prakrti is a woman or a female.
- Prakrti means woman, naturally a woman is under the control of the man. That is our Vedic system, and natural system also. However the woman may claim equal rights, they are under the control of the man. That is natural.
Achieving Spiritual Perfection
The perfection of human life is achieved when the soul abandons the false attempt to imitate the supreme enjoyer and enthusiastically embraces its identity as a spiritual maidservant. Real transcendental bliss occurs when the prakṛti cooperates perfectly with the puruṣa for His exclusive satisfaction. By dedicating one's life to this principle, as continually taught by Śrīla Prabhupāda, the devotee accesses the highest spiritual joy under the divine shelter of the Lord's internal energy.
- Krishna is the only male and all others being energies of Krishna, they're prakrti, or female. Please don't try to understand this male and female in the material sense. In other words, our perfection of life will be actually realizing that we're all females.
- Krsna had to conquer such queen by fighting. They're not ordinary wife. But still, they say that "In this way I have become maidservant." So everyone is maidservant. We are also maidservant, prakrti. Prakrti means female.
- When the purusa and prakrti, male and female, enjoy, they enjoy, they get the same pleasure, but one is purusa; one is prakrti. Similarly, Krsna is purusa, and we are prakrti. If we enjoy with Krsna, then the ananda, sac-cid-ananda, is there.
- If one wants to continue his association with prakrti, the female energy of Krsna, and be separated from Krsna by the illusion that he is able to enjoy prakrti, he must continue in his conditional life.
- We are trying to be under the guidance of Radharani, daivi-prakrti. Prakrti means woman, and daivi, transcendental woman.
Conclusion
The illusion of material life is deeply rooted in the false attempt of the living entity to act as the supreme male enjoyer. By accepting the profound teachings of Śrīla Prabhupāda, one quickly realizes that the entire cosmic manifestation and the countless souls are all prakṛti—the female energy meant strictly for the pleasure of Kṛṣṇa. Ultimately, a true Vaiṣṇava finds perfect liberation and eternal happiness by fully surrendering to the Supreme Lord in the humble mood of a devoted servant.
