Understanding Where and How the Supreme Lord Lives
One of the greatest tragedies of modern society is the lack of education regarding the nature of God. People speculate endlessly about whether God exists, but they rarely ask practical questions: How does He live? Where does He live? What are His daily activities? The Vedic literatures provide the ultimate science of God, proving that God is not a dead, abstract concept, but a supremely active, living person. Śrīla Prabhupāda meticulously explains the multi-dimensional nature of the Lord's existence. He reveals how God lives simultaneously in His supreme spiritual abodes, intimately within the heart of every living entity, dynamically wherever His devotees chant His glories, and historically upon the earth to display His perfect pastimes. By understanding where and how the Supreme Personality of Godhead lives, a conditioned soul can reestablish their eternal, living relationship with Him.
Living Within the Heart (Paramātmā)
The Supreme Lord is never distant or disconnected from our lives. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes the profound truth found in the Bhagavad-gītā: the Lord expands as the Paramātmā (Supersoul) and lives directly within the core of every single living entity's heart, acting as the ultimate witness and guide.
- The Supreme Personality of Godhead is known as Vasudeva because He lives everywhere. The word vas means "to live."
- The syllable van indicates that every being lives in Him (God) and that He also lives in every being.
- As confirmed in the Bhagavad-gita, isvarah sarva-bhutanam hrd-dese ’rjuna tisthati: "The Supreme Lord in His Paramatma feature lives within everyone’s heart."
- Because He (the Lord) lives in the heart of every living being, He is conscious of the psychic movements of the particular jivas. We should not forget this.
Living in the Spiritual Abodes
While the Lord lives everywhere through His energies and His Paramātmā feature, He also has His own personal, eternal residence. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the supreme destination for a pure devotee is not a formless void, but the magnificent spiritual planets of Goloka and Vaikuṇṭha, where the Lord lives eternally.
- Unfortunately many people have no information of these sublime planets (Goloka and Vaikuntha) where Krsna and Visnu live, and because they do not know of them they fall down. Even the impersonalists fall down from the brahmajyoti.
- Garbhodakasayi Visnu also has His own Vaikuntha planet in every universe, where He lives as the Supersoul or supreme controller of the universe.
- We are not very eager to go to this planet or that planet. We are eager to go directly to the planet where Krsna lives.
- The fifteen-day period of anavasara is also called nibhrta, in honor of the solitary place where the supreme goddess of fortune lives. After living there a fortnight, Lord Jagannatha took permission from the goddess of fortune to leave.
Living Wherever the Devotees Are
The Supreme Lord is intensely attracted by the love of His pure devotees. Śrīla Prabhupāda reveals a beautiful secret: the Lord is most vividly present and practically "lives" in the exact locations where His devotees are sincerely chanting His holy names and executing His mission.
- The Lord says, that He lives neither in Vaikuntha nor in the heart of a yogi, but He lives where His pure devotees are always chanting and glorifying Him.
- Some say that the devotee should remain in holy places like Vrndavana or some holy town where the Lord lived, but a pure devotee can live anywhere and create the atmosphere of Vrndavana by his devotional service.
- The foundation of all the demigods is Lord Visnu, who lives and is worshiped wherever there are religious principles, traditional culture, the Vedas, cows, brahmanas, austerities, and sacrifices with proper remuneration.
- A brahmana may be extremely fortunate in having achieved brahma jnana, but the Pandavas were so exalted that the Parabrahman, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, was living in their house like an ordinary human being.
Setting the Example on Earth
When the Supreme Lord descends to the material world in various incarnations, He does not just preach philosophy; He demonstrates it through His daily life. Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights how the Lord sets the perfect example of duty, renunciation, and love by how He lived as Lord Rāmacandra, Lord Ṛṣabhadeva, and Lord Kṛṣṇa.
- Lord Rsabhadeva entered householder life and lived according to the principles of Vedic knowledge - sruti and smrti.
- Under the order of His father, Maharaja Dasaratha, He entered the forest and lived there for considerable years with His wife and younger brother.
- One of His younger brothers, Laksmanaji, desired to go with Him, and so also His eternal wife, Sitaji, desired to go with Him. The Lord agreed to both of them, and all together they entered the Dandakaranya Forest, to live there for fourteen years.
- The Supreme Personality, Krsna, along with Balarama, lived in Vrajabhumi, Vrndavana, just to substantiate the benediction of Brahma.
Conclusion
A systematic study of the Vedic literatures completely revitalizes our understanding of God, transforming Him from a vague, theoretical concept into a vibrant, living reality. As Śrīla Prabhupāda clearly explains, the great defect in modern education is that it completely ignores the science of God—failing to teach how He functions, what His desires are, and crucially, where He lives. The Vedas correct this by revealing that the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Vāsudeva, is the ultimate living being. Because His form is entirely spiritual (sac-cid-ānanda), He is not restricted by space. He lives eternally in His supreme spiritual planets of Vaikuṇṭha and Goloka Vṛndāvana, surrounded by limitless opulence and liberated souls. Simultaneously, He performs the incredible feat of living directly within the heart of every single conditioned soul as the Paramātmā (Supersoul), intimately witnessing our thoughts, guiding our actions, and waiting patiently for us to turn our attention back to Him. Yet, the Lord's most endearing quality is that He is conquered by the love of His devotees. He practically abandons all formal residences to live dynamically wherever His pure devotees are joyfully chanting His holy names and discussing His pastimes. Furthermore, when the Lord descends to earth, He demonstrates the perfection of living. Whether He is living strictly as an ideal householder like Lord Ṛṣabhadeva, accepting the hardships of forest life out of duty like Lord Rāmacandra, or enchanting the residents of Vṛndāvana with His childhood pastimes as Lord Kṛṣṇa, His every action is absolute. Therefore, the highest perfection for the human being is to stop making temporary plans for this material world, and instead, adopt the process of Kṛṣṇa consciousness so that we may ultimately live with God eternally.
