Trusting the Abundance of God's Providing
Śrīla Prabhupāda establishes that the Supreme Personality of Godhead is the unlimited source of all maintenance. By studying his instructions, we can understand how Śrī Kṛṣṇa provides for every species, why the anxiety over material scarcity is an illusion, how He supplies the desires of the materialists, and why the pure devotee remains completely fearless and dependent on His supreme grace.
The Supreme Father and Maintainer
In all authorized religious traditions, God is recognized as the supreme father who maintains His children. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that Śrī Kṛṣṇa is the singular supreme predominator who effortlessly sustains the lives of innumerable living entities.
- According to Christianity, the supreme father, God, provides the living entities with all of life’s necessities. Therefore they pray - Give us this day our daily bread.
- In the Vedic language we can understand that God is also a living entity. He's not void. He's just like a person, like you and me. But He's so powerful. Eko bahunam vidadhati kaman. One single number, He is providing so many, innumerable living entities.
- The Lord claims that every living entity-in whatever form-is His son, and as such He provides everyone with a generous supply of the necessities of life.
- One living being is providing, maintaining all other living beings. So our position is being maintained by God and God is maintainer. Our position is being predominated and God is predominator.
Universal Provision and Arrangement
The Lord's providing is not limited to one planet or one group of people; it is a universal system of perfect management. Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights how the Supreme Lord orchestrates the forces of nature, such as the sunshine and the rain, to ensure that all planetary systems are perfectly habitable.
- After reaching the shore of the ocean of milk, the demigods worshiped the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Visnu, the master of the whole universe, the supreme God of all gods, who provides for everyone and diminishes everyone's suffering - SB 10.1.20.
- Because we need drinking water, by God's arrangement the sunshine evaporates the water from the ocean, takes it high in the sky, and then distributes clear, distilled water. Just see how God is providing everything that everyone needs.
- Every planet is a residence for innumerable living entities, and the necessary space is provided in the sky by the supreme order of the Lord.
- The normal condition is that the Lord has provided each and every planet with all the needs of the native living beings.
Sustaining All Species
Humans often arrogantly believe they are the only ones capable of managing their own survival. Śrīla Prabhupāda points out the flaw in this thinking by reminding us that the Supreme Lord automatically provides for millions of species—from the mighty elephant down to the insignificant ant.
- Every living entity has to eat something, and in fact the necessities for his life have already been provided by the Supreme Personality of Godhead. The Lord has provided food for both the elephant and the ant.
- Of course, we need to be maintained in eating, sleeping, mating and defending (ahara-nidra-bhaya-maithuna), but since the Supreme Lord, the Personality of Godhead, has provided these necessities of life for the birds and bees, why not for mankind.
- Within this material world there are various types of living entities, and the different types of reptiles and scorpions mentioned in this verse (SB 4.18.22) are also provided with their sustenance by the arrangement of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
- All created things in the sky, in the air, on land and in the sea belong to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and every living being is provided with food.
The Illusion of Scarcity and Endeavor
Because of a lack of Kṛṣṇa consciousness, modern society invents economic problems and political crises based on fear. Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that problems like overpopulation or food shortages are illusions, for God has already provided an abundant supply of resources for everyone.
- God has provided everyone's food. There is no problem. It is mistake to accept it that - Because there is overpopulation in the world, there is problem.
- Why I shall steal? There is enough food. But because I haven't got this knowledge that "God is the proprietor. I am His part and parcel, son. So if He has provided food for the elephant, who eats at a time forty kilos, I cannot eat?" This is knowledge.
- For providing myself, my body and soul together, I have to, work so much. But Krsna, He is providing millions and trillions of living entities without any endeavor.
- This is intelligence, that God has provided for everyone for these facilities, so human being, why he should not have this facility from God? It is already there. There is no doubt about it.
Providing for the Materialists
The Lord is so magnanimous that He even fulfills the desires of those who wish to forget Him. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that for those conditioned souls who want to lord it over material nature, the Supreme Lord generously provides the fields of material science and enjoyment.
- For those who want to lord it over material nature, there are so many departments of material enjoyment; material knowledge and material science are available, and the Lord provides for persons who want to enjoy them.
- So many departments of material enjoyment; material knowledge and material science are available, and the Lord provides for persons who want to enjoy them. The conclusion is that one should worship the Supreme Personality of Godhead for any benediction.
- God is one, and we are many, but He is worshiped because He provides for everyone. It is God who provides food and all the other necessities of life.
- My Lord, You are the provider of the Pitrlokas as well as all the demigods. You are the predominating deity of the moon and the master of all three Vedas. I offer my respectful obeisances unto You because You are the original source of satisfaction.
The Fearlessness of the Pure Devotee
A true Vaiṣṇava abandons all mundane anxieties regarding self-preservation. Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that the pure devotee knows with absolute certainty that if the Supreme Lord provides for the stray cats and dogs, He will undoubtedly maintain His sincere servants who have dedicated their lives to Him.
- If God can provide food and shelter for cats and dogs, do you think God will not provide food and shelter for His confidential devotee? Is God so blind or ingratitude or unable.
- The pure devotee does not have to worry about the necessities of life; he need not be anxious because when he removes the darkness from his heart, everything is provided automatically by the Supreme Lord.
- We should not materially calculate, thinking, “It is better to stock food for a week. Why give the Lord trouble by having Him bring food daily?” One should be convinced that the Lord will provide daily. There is no need to stock food for the next day.
- He (a devotee) should nonetheless completely depend on the Supreme Lord, understanding that the Supreme Lord provides everyone with food and shelter.
Conclusion
Śrīla Prabhupāda beautifully eradicates the mundane anxieties of the conditioned soul by revealing the infallible nature of God's providing. The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Śrī Kṛṣṇa, is the absolute maintainer (eko bahūnām yo vidadhāti kāmān), effortlessly generating the necessities of life for every living entity across the cosmos. While human beings frantically toil and scheme due to a false sense of scarcity, the reality is that the Lord's natural arrangements—sunshine, rain, grains, and space—are abundantly sufficient for all. If the Supreme Lord naturally provides food for the massive elephant, the soaring bird, and the crawling insect without their hard labor, it is sheer ignorance for human beings to doubt His ability to maintain them. The perfection of intelligence is to abandon the hoarding mentality and the illusion of independence. By trusting completely in the abundance of God's providing, a pure devotee becomes entirely fearless, dedicating all time and energy to the blissful cultivation of bhakti-yoga, knowing that Kṛṣṇa will perfectly supply all necessities.
