Transforming Pravṛtti into Spiritual Devotion
The cosmic manifestation functions based on the natural propensities of the conditioned souls to lord over material resources. To rectify this deep-rooted illusion, Śrīla Prabhupāda comprehensively explains the dichotomy between pravṛtti (material inclination) and nivṛtti (renunciation). By properly understanding and regulating these two paths through scriptural injunctions, a sincere seeker can seamlessly transform their mundane desires into pure, unalloyed service to the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
The Material Inclination for Enjoyment
Every living being that enters the material world carries a deep-seated desire to exploit and enjoy the resources of nature. This natural, conditioned propensity to act for one's own sense gratification is defined as pravṛtti. As carefully described by Śrīla Prabhupāda, this attitude of overlordship affects everyone from Lord Brahmā down to the tiny ant, perpetually keeping the soul bound to the cycle of birth and death until true spiritual intelligence is awakened.
- According to the Vedas, there are two kinds of activities-pravrtti and nivrtti. Pravrtti activities involve raising oneself from a lower to a higher condition of materialistic life, whereas nivrtti means the cessation of material desire.
- Every one of us who has come to this material world has the sense of overlordship. This is called pravrtti.
- Pravrtti means here in this material world, anyone who has come, beginning from Lord Brahma down to the small ant, they have come on account of pravrtti, means for enjoying sense.
- We have come here within this material world to enjoy material resources. That is called pravrtti. And when we come to the platform of understanding that "I am not this body; I am soul," then my occupational duty changes.
- We have come to this material world for sense gratification. This is pravrtti. Pravrtti means that is our natural propensity, inclination. We are simply making plans how to satisfy our senses. That is material life.
The Demoniac Nature
The defining characteristic of an atheistic or demoniac civilization is its complete inability to distinguish between proper and improper action. Those who possess such asuric qualities act whimsically, completely ignoring the higher spiritual laws governing the universe. Highlighting this dangerous ignorance, Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that without knowing the difference between pravṛtti and nivṛtti, individuals become terribly irresponsible and helplessly entangled in sinful activities.
- Demons, who are less than human beings but are not called animals, do not know the meaning of pravrtti and nivrtti, work to be done and work not to be done.
- Krsna is explaining about the demonic nature. The first characteristic of demonic nature is they do not know what should be the pravrtti and what should be nivrtti, proper and improper action.
- Pravrtti and nivrtti means which one, which path, we shall take and which path we shall reject. That they (demons) do not know.
- The asuras, nondevotees, cannot distinguish between pravrtti and nivrtti. Whatever they like they do. Such persons think themselves independent of the strong material nature, and therefore they are irresponsible and do not care to act piously.
- The asuric, demonic, civilization, they do not know in which way we have to guide ourself for attaining the perfection of life, pravrtti, and nivrtti, and which we shall not take - favorable and unfavorable.
The Need for Regulation and Nivṛtti
While animals are hopelessly driven by their biological urges, the human form of life provides the unique intelligence required to consciously restrict material indulgences. To achieve genuine spiritual elevation, one must systematically curb their baser instincts through the practice of nivṛtti. As emphatically taught by Śrīla Prabhupāda, deliberately controlling one's diet, sleep, and sensual activities is the only way to successfully escape the miseries of material bondage.
- Every conditioned soul has natural inclination. Pravrtti. But one has to control that. That is human life. If you put yourself in the waves of natural inclination, that is not human life. You have to restrict.
- The human life is meant for nivrtti. The cats' and dogs' life is for pravrtti. The sex desire, they cannot stop it. It is not possible. If you teach some dogs that "You forget the sex life," it is impossible. That is not possible.
- The Vedic injunction for the pravrttas is to gradually regulate their activities towards the path of liberation.
- There is that inclination, pravrtti and nivrtti, but they should be synchronized, systematized, what things we should accept and what things we should reject. That we must learn.
- You require pravrtti and nivrtti to understand how you should think, how you should live, how you should eat, how you should sleep. This training is required. Why it is required? Because to get out of this material bondage.
Following Scriptural Guidance
Without an authoritative standard, the human mind cannot accurately determine what is truly beneficial or harmful for the soul. The Vedic literature acts as a perfect manual, outlining both positive and negative actions for individuals at every stage of spiritual development. According to Śrīla Prabhupāda, taking shelter of the śāstra and the pure devotees is absolutely necessary to correctly apply the principles of pravṛtti and nivṛtti in daily life.
- Actions which are performed in terms of the directions of the scriptures are called pravrtti, or actions that deserve to be performed, and actions which are not so directed are not to be performed.
- In the Vedas two different types of injunctions are there for the pravrttas, or those who are engaged in material enjoyment, and for the nivrttas, or those who are liberated from material bondage.
- The sastra gives us direction that you should be accepting these things and you should be not accepting these things, sastra. Just like in our society, we have picked up the most essential nivrtti and pravrtti.
- To take the shelter of a pure devotee means he knows what is pravrtti and what is nivrtti. All our Vedic literature is meant for nivrtti.
Perfection Through Transcendental Service
The ultimate goal of restricting the senses is not to become completely void of desires, but to purify and redirect them. True liberation is achieved when a person actively engages their propensities for the sheer pleasure of the Supreme Lord. As beautifully illuminated by Śrīla Prabhupāda, when one shifts their pravṛtti from self-gratification to Kṛṣṇa consciousness, they immediately overcome material entanglement and secure their return back home, back to Godhead.
- Actually this pravrtti, this intention or this purpose of enjoying this material world, is not given to you by God. We have created. God's desire is that you become a devotee.
- If you want to go back to home, back to Godhead, then you have to follow the nivrtti-marga. Pravrtti is there, my inclination is there, but if you practice nivrtti-marga, then you overcome the cycle of birth and death, samsrtih.
- Our pravrtti is to abide by the dictation of the senses, and when we learn not to abide by the dictation of the senses but to abide by the orders of Krsna or His representative, then your life are successful.
- This Krsna consciousness movement is educating that the varieties of service should be concentrated for the satisfaction of Krsna. That is pravrtti.
- Through pravrtti activities one suffers from material entanglement, but by nivrtti activities one is purified and becomes fit to enjoy eternal, blissful life.
Conclusion
The journey from material bondage to spiritual freedom hinges entirely on how one directs their natural inner propensities. Through the profound instructions of Śrīla Prabhupāda, it is clear that blindly following the urges of pravṛtti leads only to suffering and deep illusion. However, by strictly adopting the principles of nivṛtti and engaging one's active tendencies solely in the loving service of Kṛṣṇa, the sincere soul easily attains the eternal perfection of pure devotional life.
