Transcending the Bodily Platform to Spiritual Consciousness
A fundamental concept in the philosophy of Kṛṣṇa consciousness is the distinction between the "bodily platform" and the "spiritual platform." The bodily platform is the default state of the conditioned soul, characterized by the false belief that the self is the material body. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that this misconception is the root of all conflict and suffering. To find true happiness and unity, one must elevate their consciousness beyond the temporary body and mind to the eternal spiritual reality.
The Illusion of Designation
Śrīla Prabhupāda defines the bodily platform as the mentality of "I am American," "I am Indian," "I am German," etc. These designations are merely labels attached to the gross body. Just as a dream is a creation of the mind, these identities are temporary creations of material nature. Progress in spiritual life is impossible as long as one holds onto these false egos.
- Every one of them is thinking on the bodily platform: "I am Indian," "I am American," "I am German," and "I am Englishman," like that. Therefore there is no solution because the basic principle is wrong.
- The concept of European, American, or Indian is based on the bodily platform. So long one is under the impression that he is this body, he cannot make much progress in this movement.
- These dreams are on the mental platform, the egoistic platform, and the bodily platform. But I am not the body. The gross body and subtle body are different from my actual self.
- If one understands that "I am not this body; I am spirit soul," he is called atmavit, or he is liberated. He is not bodily conscious platform. There are three platforms of identification with self.
The Cause of Conflict
Why is there so much strife in the world? Śrīla Prabhupāda pinpoints the cause: the bodily platform creates duality. When we identify with the body, we automatically categorize others as "friends" or "enemies" based on whether they gratify or impede our bodily senses. True equality is impossible on this level because, physically, every body is different.
- I say: "American? Oh, they are my friends. Russians? They are my enemies." Why? What is the platform of this distinction? The platform is body.
- What is our calculation? I am thinking somebody my friend and another body as my enemy. Why? Because I make distinction on the bodily platform.
- Each and every body is different from the other. So long the soul is in ignorance and identifies with the body, how can there be equality? So unless one is raised to spiritual understanding, there is no question of equality on the bodily platform.
- Those who imitate an uttama-adhikari by flaunting a sense of oneness or fellowship but who behave on the bodily platform are actually false philanthropists.
Limitations of Material Happiness
The bodily platform is not only a source of conflict but also of misery. Śrīla Prabhupāda warns that happiness is not possible on the bodily or mental planes because they are fleeting. Activity on the bodily platform leads to fatigue, whereas spiritual activity is tireless. Remaining on this platform means remaining in the animal kingdom, wasting the valuable human form of life.
- Either on the bodily plane or on the mental plane you cannot be happy. That is not possible. But if you want to be happy then you have to come to the spiritual platform and engage in spiritual activities.
- Material enjoyment on the gross bodily platform is discouraged throughout Bhagavad-gita: matra-sparsas tu kaunteya, sitosna-sukha-duhkha-dah, agamapayino 'nityas, tams titiksasva bharata - Bhagavad-Gita 2.14.
- Materially, when a man becomes tired by rendering service in his physical body, he is allowed retirement, but in the transcendental service there is no feeling of fatigue because it is spiritual service and is not on the bodily plane.
- On this platform of bodily concept of life, we remain animal. And to raise from that animal platform to the platform of our spiritual consciousness, that is the business of human life. Athato brahma jijnasa. This is the Vedanta-sutra.
The Spiritual Solution
The solution to all these problems is to ascend to the spiritual platform. This means seeing every living being as a spirit soul, part and parcel of Kṛṣṇa. On this level, there is no discrimination, only universal brotherhood and service. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement is specifically designed to lift humanity from the bodily concept to this liberated state.
- When one sees only to the spiritual existence of a living entity, there is question of seeing equally, equal vision, universal brotherhood. That is possible. Not on the bodily platform. That is not possible.
- A devotee sees all living entities with spiritual vision and does not discriminate on the platform of the bodily concept of life. Such qualities develop only in the association of devotees.
- Unless we come to the spiritual platform - we remain on the bodily platform - we shall speak differently. And as soon as we come to the spiritual platform, then we shall speak in one item only, how to serve Krsna.
- This Krsna consciousness movement is not on the bodily platform. It is on the spiritual platform. To come to the spiritual platform, it is necessary that you reduce or make nil sex life.
Conclusion
To be Kṛṣṇa conscious means to stop acting as a body and start acting as a soul. By abandoning the false designations of the bodily platform and embracing our identity as eternal servants of Kṛṣṇa, we can enter a realm of endless energy, true equality, and unadulterated bliss.
