Transcendental Pastimes Described in the Kṛṣṇa Book
Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the narrations of Lord Kṛṣṇa's activities are non-different from the Lord Himself. By hearing these transcendental descriptions from authorized sources, conditioned souls can awaken their dormant love for Godhead and become free from material anxieties.
The Inconceivable Nature of Kṛṣṇa's Activities
The Supreme Personality of Godhead possesses unlimited potencies, making His pastimes impossible to fully measure or describe using material sound or the material mind. One must approach these narrations with spiritual faith rather than mundane calculation.
- By His (Krsna's) unlimited potencies He performs unlimited pastimes, and no one can describe them in full, nor can anyone know them all.
- King Pariksit continued, "Description of a subject matter necessitates describing its source of emanation, its qualities and its activities. Such description can be possible only by thinking with the material mind and by vibrating material words."
- King Pariksit continued, "How then can Brahman, the Absolute Truth, be described by your words? I do not see how it is possible to understand transcendence from such expressions of material sound."
- Krsna's mercy is also described as paramam, for it has no comparison within this material world, and it is also called suksmam, very fine.
The Efficacy of Hearing from Authorities
Spiritual realization depends entirely on hearing the Lord's pastimes from exalted devotees in the disciplic succession. Śrīla Prabhupāda often stressed that simply by listening to these authorized descriptions, one's spiritual desires are perfectly fulfilled and one gains entrance into transcendental subject matters.
- Anyone who hears, recites or chants them surely gets all his spiritual desires fulfilled. Thus Krsna's childhood pastimes, His sporting with Balarama and the cowherd boys in Vrndavana, were described.
- One who has developed his faith in Krsna as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the Supreme Spirit Soul, can both describe and hear the rasa-lila. Sukadeva also uses the word anusrnuyat. One must hear from the disciplic succession.
- Sanandana said, "The Vedas personified describing His (Lord's) wonderful transcendental pastimes, exactly like servants of a king."
- Sukadeva Gosvami was already engaged in describing the activities of the Lord, and when asked by Maharaja Pariksit to describe them further, he continued to narrate Srimad-Bhagavatam with great pleasure.
The Ecstasy of Vṛndāvana's Residents
The eternal associates of the Lord, especially the gopīs, remain constantly absorbed in thoughts of Kṛṣṇa. Through the narrations of messengers like Uddhava, they vividly visualize and remember Kṛṣṇa's pastimes, transcending the pain of separation through the ecstasy of remembrance.
- From the outside, the gopis could visualize all the pastimes of Krsna by hearing the descriptions of Uddhava, and from within they could remember those pastimes.
- After offering respects by bowing down before Lord Krsna and Balarama, he (Uddhava) described the wonderful devotional life of the inhabitants of Vrndavana.
- Such descriptions of Krsna’s transcendental pastimes and activities were remembered by the gopis during His absence from Vrndavana. They give us some idea of how attractive Krsna is, not only to human beings but to all animate and inanimate objects.
- The killing of Pralambasura and the devouring of the devastating forest fire by Krsna and Balarama became household topics in Vrndavana. The cowherd men described these wonderful activities to their wives and to everyone else, and all were struck with wonder.
Pastimes in Dvārakā and Royal Assemblies
Lord Kṛṣṇa's activities in Dvārakā and during the Rājasūya sacrifice demonstrate His supreme opulence and the deep affection He shares with His queens and the Pāṇḍavas. Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights that these narrations serve to confirm His identity as the Supreme Personality of Godhead even while He acts as a human king.
- Sukadeva Gosvami narrated these incidents of Krsna's killing Sisupala and described the successful execution of the Rajasuya-yajna by Maharaja Yudhisthira, he also pointed out that after the successful termination of the yajna only one person was unhappy.
- Being pleased with the citizens of Dvaraka, Krsna informed them that the person they described as the sun-god was actually King Satrajit, who had come to visit Dvaraka City to show his opulence in the form of the valuable jewel obtained from the sun-god.
- Sometimes, even in the presence of Lord Krsna, they (the queens of Dvaraka) vividly described the pastimes they had enjoyed in the lake or river with Him. Some of such talk is described here.
- No one can properly describe the fortune of the wives of Lord Krsna. They took care of Him personally by rendering various transcendental services like bathing Him, feeding Him, pleasing Him and serving Him.
Conclusion
The activities of the Supreme Lord are eternal, absolute, and completely free from material contamination. Whether narrating His childhood pastimes in Vṛndāvana or His royal duties in Dvārakā, these descriptions are the lifeline for pure devotees. Through faithful hearing and chanting of these transcendental subject matters, one safely crosses the ocean of material existence and attains the supreme destination.
