The Temporary Nature of God's Material World
Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the material cosmic manifestation, while vast and bewildering to the conditioned soul, is merely a temporary display of the Lord's external energy. By studying his instructions, we can understand the mechanics of its creation and annihilation, Kṛṣṇa's transcendental position above it, and the ultimate reformatory purpose it serves for wandering living entities.
The Expansion of the Lord's Energies
The Supreme Personality of Godhead is the source of all existence, possessing unlimited potencies. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the material world is a manifestation of the Lord's inferior, external energy, representing only one-fourth of His total creation, while the eternal spiritual sky comprises the remaining three-fourths.
- All material elements as well as all spiritual sparks emanate from Him only. And whatever is created in this material world is but the interaction of two energies, the material and the spiritual, which emanate from the Absolute Truth, Sri Krsna.
- As confirmed by the Bhagavad-gita, it is clear that the living entities are also a display of the Lord's superior energy (para prakrti), just as the material world is a display of the Lord's inferior energy (apara prakrti).
- The spiritual world is the manifestation of His (God's) internal potency, and the material world is the manifestation of His external potency.
- In the spiritual sky there is neither anxiety nor fear. It is eternally existing, and it consists of three fourths of the Lord's energy. The material world is an exhibition of only one fourth of the Lord's energy.
The Cycle of Creation and Annihilation
Unlike the spiritual world, which is eternal and unchanging, the material cosmos is subject to the stringent laws of time. Śrīla Prabhupāda describes how the Lord constantly creates, maintains, and dissolves these material universes at regular intervals through His empowered qualitative incarnations: Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Śiva.
- Because this material world is the creation of His external energy, it thus appears to be temporary; it is manifested at certain intervals, maintained for some time, and again dissolved and conserved in His own energy.
- The Supreme Personality of Godhead is the creator of the material world. There are three processes in creation - namely creation, maintenance and finally annihilation.
- Lord Brahma creates the material world, Lord Visnu maintains it, and Lord Siva destroys it.
The Lord's Transcendental Position
Although the Supreme Lord is the ultimate cause of all material manifestations, He is never entangled by them. Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that Kṛṣṇa remains completely aloof, acting through His external energy without ever being conditioned by the material qualities He controls.
- In the previous verse, the word nimitta-matram indicates that the Supreme Lord is completely aloof from the action and reaction of this material world.
- The Supreme Personality of Godhead, being the all-powerful master of all energies, has some connection with the external energy, but He is always free from the interactions of the external energy in the material world.
- Narayanah paro 'vyaktat: Narayana is beyond the material creation. Because He is the creator of the material world, He is not subject to the conditions of the material world.
The Purpose of the Material Creation
The Supreme Lord is entirely self-satisfied and has no personal need for the material world. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the cosmic manifestation is a facility born of the Lord's compassion, designed to give rebellious souls a chance to rectify their consciousness through the performance of yajña (sacrifice).
- The Lord created this material world for the conditioned souls to learn how to perform yajnas (sacrifice) for the satisfaction of Visnu, so that while in the material world they can live very comfortably without anxiety.
- Anantadeva's main mission is to dissolve this material creation, but He checks His anger and intolerance. This material world is created to give the conditioned souls another chance to go back home, back to Godhead.
- For this attainment of liberation from the material clutches, the Lord creates the material world, maintains it for some time (one thousand years of His measurement, as stated in the previous verse), and then again annihilates it by His will.
The Duality and Illusion of the Material World
To the ignorant, the material world appears as a permanent place of enjoyment, causing them to forget their true spiritual identity. However, Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that a self-realized Vaiṣṇava perfectly understands the dual nature of this realm, seeing it simply as an arrangement of Kṛṣṇa's external energy.
- The Lord has employed His wonderful material energy in manifesting many, many wonderful distractions in the material world, and the conditioned souls, illusioned by the same energy, are thus unable to know the supreme cause.
- By illusory action of prakrti, even dead matter is caused to move by the cooperation of living energy of the Lord, and the material world appears like a dramatic performance to the ignorant eyes.
- This material world is called dvaita, the world of duality. A devotee knows very well that everything within this material world is but a manifestation of the Supreme Lord's energy.
Conclusion
Śrīla Prabhupāda comprehensively establishes that God's material world is an immense, yet temporary, manifestation of the Supreme Lord's inferior energy. While the eternal spiritual sky of Vaikuṇṭha remains the true home of the living entities, this material fraction of creation serves a specific, reformatory purpose. It acts as a grand stage where conditioned souls, bewildered by illusion and duality, can attempt to lord over nature. However, it is simultaneously a university designed by Kṛṣṇa where these same souls can learn the science of yajña and spiritual detachment. Throughout the endless cycles of creation, maintenance, and annihilation, the Supreme Lord—Nārāyaṇa—remains completely unaffected by the material modes. By understanding the temporary nature of this world, a sincere soul can stop seeking permanent settlement in a realm destined for destruction and redirect their focus toward returning back home, back to Godhead.
