The Supreme Perfection of Transcendental Love for God
The human form of life is meant solely for reviving our original relationship with the Supreme Lord. Elevating humanity above the pursuit of temporary gains, Śrīla Prabhupāda establishes that unalloyed, transcendental love is the highest achievement for the soul. This pure devotion transcends all mundane religious principles and completely frees the living entity from the miseries of the material world.
Surpassing All Material Goals
In the material world, people are generally driven by the desires for religiosity, economic development, sense gratification, and eventually, impersonal liberation. However, Śrīla Prabhupāda clearly explains that these four Vedic goals are ultimately insignificant. The true spiritual destination lies far beyond mundane prosperity or the desire to merge into the void. The greatest success in life is achieved only when one develops pure, transcendental love for the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
- Instead of striving for achievement in the 4 principles of religiosity, economic development, sense gratification and liberation, it is better if somehow or other one develops transcendental love of Godhead. That is the greatest success in life.
- Although by material estimation salvation is of a quality superior to the inferior interests of religiosity, economic development and sense gratification, above salvation there is the position of devotional service and transcendental love for the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
- Unfortunately, the stubborn impersonalists cannot comprehend that the final spiritual destination, beyond the four Vedic goals (religiosity, economic development, sense gratification, and liberation) is absolutely pure and transcendental love of Godhead.
- Generally, those who are very materialistic or who possess material wealth and prosperity are unable to appreciate the value of transcendental love of God.
Freedom from Bondage and Nescience
As long as the living entity is absorbed in fruitive activities, the cycle of repeated birth and death is inevitable. Describing the process of true liberation, Śrīla Prabhupāda reveals that only transcendental love can severe the strong knots of material entanglement. When the consciousness is purified through devotional service, the soul realizes its eternal position as a servitor and permanently escapes the misconceived dream of material existence.
- As long as the mind is absorbed in fruitive activities, the mind is understood to be absorbed in nescience, and thus one is sure to be subjected to material bondage in different bodies again and again until one develops a transcendental love for Godhead.
- In his pure consciousness there is no such misconceived dream, and in that pure conscious state the living entity does not forget that he is never the Lord, but that he is eternally the servitor of the Lord in transcendental love.
- Being freed from attachment, fear and anger, being fully absorbed in Me and taking refuge in Me, many, many persons in the past became purifled by knowledge of Me-and thus they all attained transcendental love for Me.
- One who attains the perfection of existence is completely averse to material enjoyment and engrossed in transcendental love of Godhead.
The Pure Vision of the Lord
A pure devotee whose heart is saturated with love experiences a constant, divine vision that remains inaccessible to mental speculators. Confirming the statements of the Brahma-saṁhitā, Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that when the eyes are smeared with the ointment of love, one can see Lord Govinda everywhere—both within the heart and in every atom of creation. This unbroken connection is the highest perfection of the yoga system.
- In the Brahma-samhita it is stated, premanjanacchurita... One can see the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Govinda, always within himself and outside himself if he has developed the transcendental loving attitude towards Him. Thus for people in general He is not visible.
- This mystery (one who is surcharged with transcendental love of Godhead can see Him in every atom) is the most confidential part of the knowledge of the Supreme, and it is impossible for the mental speculators to discover by dint of intellectual gymnastics.
- Unless a devotee actually develops transcendental love for the Lord, it is not possible for him to think always of the Lord within his heart. Such constant thought of the Lord is the sublime perfection of the yogic process.
- He (who is surcharged with transcendental love of Godhead) can see the Personality of Godhead in His own abode, Goloka, enjoying eternal pastimes with His eternal associates, who are also expansions of His transcendental existence.
The Progressive Stages of Devotion
The awakening of spiritual love is not an abrupt, artificial occurrence but a gradual, scientific progression. Outlining this development, Śrīla Prabhupāda describes how the initial unalloyed practice of bhakti matures into intense attachment, emotion, and ecstasy. Comparing this process to the thickening of sugar candy juice, he explains that as devotional service intensifies, it inevitably culminates in the supreme stage of prema-bhakti.
- When unalloyed practice of sadhana-bhakti is matured into transcendental love for the Lord, the transcendental loving service of the Lord begins gradually developing into nine progressive stages of loving service.
- The progress (of transcendental love of God) from one stage to another can be compared to the thickening of sugar candy juice.
- When one attains the third stage of transcendental love of God, there occur further developments known as transcendental affection, emotion, ecstasy and extreme and intense attachment. These are technically known by the terms raga, anuraga, bhava and mahabhava.
- When the emotional stage intensifies, it is called prema-bhakti, or transcendental love of Godhead. This gradual process is also described in the following two verses, which are found in the Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu (1.4.15-16).
Conclusion
The entire purpose of human existence is perfectly fulfilled only when one awakens an unalloyed, transcendental affection for the Supreme Lord. As Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches, this pure devotion grants the ultimate liberation from material suffering and grants direct entry into the eternal pastimes of Vṛndāvana. By continuously engaging in loving service, the soul achieves the highest possible destination, far beyond the reach of ordinary religiosity.
