The Supreme Lord Lying Down to Create the Cosmos
When mundane scientists try to explain the origins of the universe, they imagine chaotic explosions, random collisions of gas, and millions of years of mindless evolution. The Vedic perspective, however, reveals a process of supreme majesty, intelligence, and profound tranquility. The cosmic manifestation does not begin with a bang, but with the Supreme Personality of Godhead peacefully lying down. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains the highly specific and majestic process of how the Supreme Lord expands into three puruṣa incarnations—Mahā-Viṣṇu, Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu, and Kṣīrodakaśāyī Viṣṇu. Each of these forms performs the astonishing feat of lying down upon vast, transcendental oceans to generate, inhabit, and maintain the innumerable universes. By understanding the deep theological significance of God's lying down, we can appreciate both His supreme power over the cosmos and the sweet, personal meditations He offers to His devotees.
Mahā-Viṣṇu on the Causal Ocean
The original cause of all material creation is Lord Mahā-Viṣṇu. Śrīla Prabhupāda describes how this gigantic form of the Lord lies down in a state of mystic slumber upon the Kāraṇa Ocean (the Causal Ocean). It is simply through His breathing while lying down that the countless universes are born.
- When it is necessary to create the material universes, Visnu expands Himself as Maha-Visnu. Maha-Visnu lies down in the Causal Ocean and breathes all the universes from His nostrils.
- Maha-Visnu is lying in the Causal Ocean, Karanarnava, and He is breathing, and from His breathing innumerable universes are coming out. And in each and every universe, Maha-Visnu, in His further expansion as Garbhodakasayi-Visnu, He enters.
- The Causal Ocean, Visnu is lying there, sleeping within the ocean, and from His breathing the universes are coming out. This is God. Because He is in a sleeping condition, that is expansion of God. That is not original God.
- The purusa incarnation lying on the Causal Ocean is called the original purusa in the material creations, and in His virat form, in whom all the planets and their inhabitants live, He has many thousands of legs and hands.
Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu in the Universe
Once the universes are breathed out, they are dark and empty. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains how the Lord expands as Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu, enters each individual universe, and fills the bottom half with His own perspiration. He then lies down on this water, setting the stage for secondary creation.
- We can understand from the Vedic literature that this universe is half filled with water, on which Garbhodakasayi Visnu is lying. From His abdomen a lotus flower has grown, and within the stem of that lotus flower all the different planets exist.
- Beneath the entire planetary system is the garbha water. Lord Visnu lies on this garbha water, and from His abdomen a lotus stem grows, and all the planets within the universe are floating in the air, being supported by this lotus stem.
- In the reservoir of water first created by the perspiration of Garbhodakasayi Visnu, the Lord lies on the Sesa plenary expansion of Visnu, who is described in Srimad-Bhagavatam and in the four Vedas.
- Your body is lying within the vast water at the bottom of the universe, and thus You are known as Garbhodakasayi Visnu.
Kṣīrodakaśāyī Viṣṇu and the Ocean of Milk
To maintain the universe and act as the Supersoul in the heart of every living entity, the Lord expands a third time as Kṣīrodakaśāyī Viṣṇu. Śrīla Prabhupāda details how this form of the Lord lies down upon the ocean of milk within the universe, receiving the prayers of the demigods when the cosmic order is threatened.
- The Laghu-bhagavatamrta says that Garbhodakasayi Visnu has a four-handed form, and when He Himself enters the hollow of the universe and lies down in the ocean of milk He is known as Ksirodakasayi Visnu, who is the Supersoul of all living entities.
- The Purusa-sukta is the standard prayer which the demigods recite to appease the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Ksirodakasayi Visnu. Because He is lying on the ocean of milk, He is called Ksirodakasayi Visnu.
- The Lord Visnu who lies in the ocean of milk incarnates Himself in various forms to maintain the laws of the cosmos and annihilate the causes of disturbance. Such incarnations are visible in every manv-antara.
- May Sri Nityananda Rama be the object of my constant remembrance. Sankarsana, Sesa Naga and the Visnus who lie on the Karana Ocean, Garbha Ocean and ocean of milk are His plenary portions and the portions of His plenary portions.
The Meaning of Nārāyaṇa and Meditation
The Lord's pastime of lying down is so central to His identity that it forms the basis of His famous name, Nārāyaṇa. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains the linguistic breakdown of this name, and highlights how the Lord's various postures, especially His lying down, are focal points for daily Deity worship and yogic meditation.
- That Supreme Person is not impersonal and therefore is distinctively a nara, or person. Therefore the transcendental water created from the Supreme Nara is known as nara. And because He lies down on that water, He is known as Narayana.
- Visnu lies on the water, so the Supreme Personality of Godhead can be properly addressed in this way.
- Thus always merged in devotional service, the yogi visualizes the Lord standing, moving, lying down or sitting within him, for the pastimes of the Supreme Lord are always beautiful and attractive.
- When the Deity is laid down, His legs should be massaged. Before laying the Deity down, a pot of milk and sugar should be offered to Him. After taking this thick milk, the Deity should lie down and should be offered betel nuts and spices to chew.
Conclusion
A systematic study of the Vedic literatures completely transforms our understanding of universal mechanics from a sterile, mathematical process into a magnificent, personal pastime of the Supreme Lord. As Śrīla Prabhupāda so beautifully explains, the creation, maintenance, and annihilation of the material cosmos are all facilitated by the Supreme Personality of Godhead assuming His three puruṣa expansions and simply lying down. When it is time to create, Mahā-Viṣṇu lies down in a mystic slumber upon the Kāraṇa Ocean, exhaling countless universes with every breath. To fill these dark, empty spheres, He expands as Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu, entering each universe, generating the vast garbha water from His own body, and lying down upon the serpent Śeṣa Nāga to sprout the cosmic lotus of Lord Brahmā. Finally, to ensure the universe operates smoothly, He expands as Kṣīrodakaśāyī Viṣṇu, lying down upon the localized ocean of milk to act as the Supersoul of all beings and receive the desperate prayers of the demigods. Because the Supreme Person (Nara) eternally lies down upon these transcendental waters (nāra), He is glorified throughout the universe as Nārāyaṇa. Mundane people, whose minds cannot grasp anything beyond their own tiny physical limitations, often dismiss these descriptions as mythological legends. However, for the advanced yogī and the pure devotee, the Lord lying down on His serpent bed is the ultimate reality. It is a profound theological truth that simultaneously demonstrates the Lord's effortless, supreme power over the cosmos and provides a beautiful, deeply personal image that devotees meditate upon and actively serve every evening as they lovingly lay their Deities down to rest.
