The Supreme Limitless Scope of God's Measurements
Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that the Supreme Personality of Godhead exists far beyond the reach of human calculation. By studying his instructions, we learn why mundane scientists fail to measure God, how spiritual happiness expands infinitely, and the profound meaning behind the specific, divine measurements the Lord reveals to His devotees.
The Futility of Mundane Measurement
Conditioned souls, relying on their tiny, imperfect senses, often foolishly attempt to quantify the Absolute Truth. Śrīla Prabhupāda points out the absurdity of this endeavor, noting that if we cannot even measure the vastness of material space, it is impossible for our "froglike brains" to measure the unlimited Supreme Lord.
- The material scientists also want to challenge the inconceivable potency of the Lord by measuring Him with their froglike brains and their scientific achievements, but at the end they simply die unsuccessfully, like the frog.
- Srimad-Bhagavatam also recommends that we give up this futile process to measure the Supreme. We cannot even measure the limitations of space, what to speak of the Supreme.
- Merciful as He (Krsna) is, He becomes just suitable to the vision of the limited living being. He is unlimited. He is not limited by any measurement of our calculation.
- The length and breadth of the transcendental body of the Supreme Personality of Godhead could only be measured by His own measurement because He is all-pervading throughout the complete cosmic manifestation.
The Unlimited Spiritual Happiness
In the spiritual world, the bliss experienced by the Lord and His devotees is dynamic, not static. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that although the omniscient Lord is capable of measuring His own happiness, that happiness immediately increases, creating a beautiful, eternal competition between spiritual increment and divine measurement.
- It is said in the scriptures, brahma-saukhyam tv anantam: spiritual happiness is unlimited. Here it is said that even the Lord cannot measure such happiness. This does not mean that the Lord cannot measure it and is therefore imperfect in that sense.
- The happiness in the Lord is also identical with the Lord on account of absolute knowledge. So the happiness derived from the Lord may be measured by the Lord, but the happiness increases again, and the Lord measures it again.
- The happiness increases more and more, and the Lord measures it more and more, and as such there is eternally a competition between increment and measurement, so much so that the competition is never stopped, but goes on unlimitedly ad infinitum.
The Inconceivable Footsteps of the Lord
The Supreme Lord is not bound by the physical dimensions of the universe He created. Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights the famous pastime of Lord Vāmanadeva, who appeared as a dwarf brāhmaṇa but used the measurement of just three of His footsteps to cover all the planetary systems.
- Bali Maharaja possessed all the lands of the universe, and he happened to be charitably disposed toward the brahmanas. The Lord therefore pretended to be a beggar brahmana, and He asked Bali Maharaja for a measurement of three footsteps of land.
- Lord Vamanadeva wanted three paces of land according to the measurement of His footsteps. He did not want more than necessary.
- The Supreme Personality of Godhead, by His inconceivable prowess, can occupy the entire universe, including the upper, lower and middle planetary systems, by the unlimited measurement of His footsteps.
The Perfect Proportions of the Supreme Forms
While the Lord is vast and all-pervading, He simultaneously manifests localized forms with specific, beautiful measurements for the meditation of His devotees. Śrīla Prabhupāda describes the precise dimensions of the Supersoul in the heart, as well as the extraordinary physical features of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu.
- The Lord discloses His form, even to the extent of measurement, to His pure devotees, and that is the meaning of yavan, as explained by Srila Jiva Gosvami, the greatest scholar of Srimad-Bhagavatam.
- The Supreme Personality of Godhead, by His partial representation, measuring not more than nine inches as Supersoul, expands by His potential energy in the shape of the universal form, which includes everything manifested in different varieties.
- The measurement of the localized Personality of Godhead is estimated to expand from the ring finger to the end of the thumb, more or less eight inches. The form of the Lord described in this verse (2.2.8) with distribution of different symbols.
- Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s bodily features were uncommon. Indeed, His body was extraordinary in its measurements. The measurement of His chest and the measurement of His forearms were the same. This is called nyagrodha-parimandala.
Conclusion
Śrīla Prabhupāda’s teachings reveal the beautiful paradox of God's measurements. To the proud, materialistic scientists attempting to calculate the Absolute Truth with mundane instruments, the Supreme Lord remains entirely inaccessible and immeasurable. His form, potencies, and spiritual happiness expand infinitely, forever out-pacing the limits of human cognition. Yet, out of boundless mercy, Kṛṣṇa manifests specific, perfectly proportioned forms—such as the localized Supersoul within the heart and the uniquely beautiful nyagrodha-parimaṇḍala form of Lord Caitanya—specifically to capture the minds of His pure devotees. Furthermore, as demonstrated by Lord Vāmanadeva, the Lord's physical measurements are completely transcendental to the laws of space; He can traverse the entire universe with a single footstep. Thus, by abandoning the futile desire to measure the infinite with a finite brain, and by taking to the path of submissive devotional service, a devotee is granted the realization of the Lord’s supreme, limitless glory.
