The Supersoul Is Situated Within Our Heart as Our Supreme Friend
Śrīla Prabhupāda constantly emphasizes that we are never alone in our material journey. The Supreme Lord, Kṛṣṇa, expands Himself as the Paramātma to accompany the individual soul in every body. This localized expansion is situated within the core of the heart, acting as the ultimate witness, friend, and internal spiritual master. Rather than relying solely on the theoretical knowledge of the jñānīs or impersonalists, a sincere devotee directly experiences the Lord's presence through loving service. By understanding how the Supersoul directs our wanderings, witnesses our actions, and inspires our devotion, we can begin to appreciate the profound relationship we share with the Lord seated within.
The Anatomy of the Soul and Supersoul
Vedic science provides a deeply specific understanding of where the living entity and the Supreme Lord reside within the material body. While modern science observes the mechanical functions of the heart, spiritual science reveals it as the seat of consciousness, housing both the atomic soul and the localized expansion of God.
- The medical science also says all the energy is coming from the heart. The heart stops to work, that means man is dead. So the soul and the Supersoul both are sitting in the heart.
- The argument may be put forward, How can something the size of a thumb be accommodated within the heart of an ant? The answer is that this thumb measurement of the Supersoul is imagined in proportion to the body of the living entity.
- We understand from the Brahma-samhita that the Supersoul is present within the universe, within the atom and within the heart of every living creature.
- Because the Supreme Lord, as Supersoul, sits within the core of every living entity's heart, the dictation by which one advances in scientific knowledge or creative faculties comes from Him.
The Ultimate Witness and Director
The living entity constantly forms plans and desires, carrying them from one body to the next. However, we lack the independent power to fulfill them. It is the Supersoul who observes our actions, remembers our past, and provides the exact material facilities necessary for us to act out our karma.
- The legs move forward because the eyes see what is in front of them, and the hand touches because the eyes see touchable entities. Similarly, every living being acts according to the direction of the Supersoul, who is situated within the heart.
- The demoniac person, who has no faith in God or the Supersoul within himself, performs all kinds of sinful activities simply for sense gratification. He does not know that there is a witness sitting within his heart.
- There are many witnesses (of our sinful activities), including the sun, fire, sky, air, moon, demigods, evening, day, night, directions, water, land and the Supersoul Himself, who sits with the individual soul within his heart.
- All intelligence emanates from the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the Supersoul within the heart of everyone.
The Internal Spiritual Master
To deliver the conditioned souls, the Supreme Lord extends His mercy both externally and internally. Externally, He appears as the scriptures and the bona fide guru, while internally, He guides the sincere seeker as the Paramātma, confirming the instructions of the spiritual master.
- A conditioned soul is always helped by the Supreme Personality of Godhead in three ways - by the scriptures, the spiritual master and the Supersoul within the heart. The Lord is the deliverer of the conditioned soul and is accepted as the Supreme Lord of all living entities.
- Within the heart of every living being the Lord Himself as the Supersoul (Paramatma) becomes the spiritual master, and from without He becomes the spiritual master in the shape of scriptures, saints and the initiator spiritual master.
- There are two processes by which one may receive knowledge: One depends directly upon the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is situated as the Supersoul within the heart of all living entities, and the other depends upon the guru, who is an expansion of Krsna.
- One can take instructions from the Supersoul directly. This is the duty of the pure devotee: to see the bona fide spiritual master and consult with the Supersoul within the heart.
The Goal of Mystic Meditation
For practitioners of the mystic yoga systems, the highest perfection is not simply achieving physical health or supernatural abilities, but successfully focusing the mind to visualize the four-handed viṣṇu form of the Lord residing within.
- Above them (those who desire to merge into the Supreme Spirit Soul) are the mystic yogis, who by meditation see within their hearts the four-handed Visnu form of the Paramatma, or Supersoul.
- Through the mystic yoga practice called pranayama, the yogi controls the airs within the body to maintain the body in a healthy condition. In this way, the yogi comes to the point of trance and tries to see the Supersoul within the core of his heart.
- Yogis try to concentrate their minds upon the form of the Supersoul, Visnu, within the heart, but this same objective is easily achieved when one's mind is absorbed in the Deity worshiped in the temple.
- The devotee tries to come directly in touch with the Supreme Personality of Godhead, whereas the yogi tries to find the Supersoul within the heart by meditation. Thus, both directly and indirectly, yoga means bhakti-yoga.
The Supreme Friend and Well-Wisher
While the yogīs struggle through strenuous disciplines to catch a glimpse of the Supersoul, the pure devotee immediately accesses His grace through loving service. Because the Supersoul recognizes the sincerity of a devotee's heart, He reciprocates by providing constant spiritual inspiration and absolute satisfaction.
- O my friends, sons of the asuras, the Supreme Personality of Godhead in His Supersoul feature always exists within the cores of the hearts of all living entities. Indeed, He is the well-wisher and friend of all living entities, and there is no difficulty in worshiping the Lord.
- The Supreme Personality of Godhead in His plenary expansion as the Paramatma, or Supersoul, sits in everyone's heart and can understand the attitudes and desires of His devotees.
- Always engaging in the activities of devotional service, devotees feel ever-increasingly fresh and new in all their activities. The all-knower, the Supersoul within the heart of the devotee, makes everything increasingly fresh.
- A devotee is always satisfied because he feels the presence of the Supersoul within his heart and thinks of Him twenty-four hours a day. That is real satisfaction.
- As the Supersoul within the heart, He inspires all the activities of a transcendentally situated devotee. Those who possess true knowledge of the Absolute can render service to Lord Krsna in the mood of a servitor, a friend, and so on.
Conclusion
The realization that the Supersoul is situated within our heart changes how we interact with the world and all living beings. Recognizing that Kṛṣṇa is resting beside the individual soul as a constant friend and witness allows us to surrender with absolute confidence. By acting under the direction of the spiritual master and the scriptures, we align our desires with the will of the Supersoul. This harmonious connection transforms our consciousness, replacing material entanglement with an ever-fresh, blissful life of devotional service, paving the way for our ultimate return back home, back to Godhead.
