The Science of Engaging Everything in God's Service
Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that the highest perfection of life is not found in artificial renunciation or material enjoyment, but in the practical science of yukta-vairāgya. By understanding that everything emanates from and belongs to Śrī Kṛṣṇa, a sincere practitioner learns to expertly dovetail all their possessions, talents, and senses in the transcendental loving service of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
The Principle of True Renunciation
Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that rejecting the material world as false is a sign of immature spiritual understanding. True renunciation means knowing how to accept material things and expertly utilize them to please the Supreme Lord, recognizing Him as the ultimate proprietor.
- There is no question of renouncing anything because the paramahamsa knows how to engage everything in the service of the Lord.
- We cannot either renounce or enjoy. Both are illegal. Simple thing is that we must know that as it is formulated here, that everything belongs to God, so everything should be engaged for the service of God. That is real knowledge.
- For a Vaisnava sannyasi, renunciation means not accepting anything for personal sense enjoyment. Devotional service means engaging everything for the satisfaction of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
- The Mayavadi sannyasis do not know how to engage everything in the service of the Lord. Because they have no devotional training, they think material objects to be untouchable.
Dovetailing the Senses and Talents
To achieve complete absorption in Kṛṣṇa consciousness, Śrīla Prabhupāda advises that one must engage their mind, bodily limbs, and specific occupational skills in the Lord's service. Whether one is a scientist, philosopher, or an ordinary worker, every qualification achieves perfection only when offered to Śrī Kṛṣṇa.
- Everything - the mind, the body and all the sense organs - should be engaged in Krsna's service. This is to be learned from expert devotees like Narada, Svayambhu and Sambhu. This is the process.
- It does not matter what one is. One must dedicate everything in the service of the Lord. If one is a learned scholar, scientist, philosopher, poet, etc., then he should employ his learning to establish the supremacy of the Lord.
- If I am great philosopher, scientist - everything - if I do not engage all these qualifications to Krsna's service, then I shall naturally become falsely proud, and that is the cause of my falldown. I will never be able to approach God.
- One should try to engage in the service of the Lord everything for which one has specific attraction. That is the way of peace and prosperity, and that is the remedial measure for all the miseries of material existence.
The Universal Vision of a Pure Devotee
A spiritually advanced person sees the entire cosmic manifestation in connection with its creator. Śrīla Prabhupāda describes that because the pure devotee understands this absolute relationship, they naturally engage the material energy, themselves, and others in fulfilling the desires of the Supreme Lord.
- A karma-yogi views everything in relation to the Absolute, and therefore he engages everything in the transcendental service of the Absolute. He observes all living entities as so many transcendental servitors of the absolute Godhead, Sri Krsna.
- A devotee should try to understand everything in relationship with Krsna and try to serve everything in that spirit. To serve everything means to engage everything in the service of Krsna.
- Everything, even that which is material, is connected with the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Therefore everything should be engaged in the service of the Lord.
- If a person is innocent and does not know his relationship with Krsna, an advanced devotee should try to engage him in service of Krsna. One who is advanced in Krsna consciousness can engage not only the living being but everything in the service of Krsna.
The Perfection of Liberation
When all of one's actions, possessions, and consciousness are fully dedicated to Śrī Kṛṣṇa, the practitioner is completely protected from material illusion. Śrīla Prabhupāda affirms that such total absorption qualifies the sincere devotee as a liberated soul, even while they continue to act within the physical body.
- The devotees think of Krsna, act for Krsna, eat for Krsna, sleep for Krsna and work for Krsna. Thus everything is engaged in the service of Krsna. A total life in Krsna consciousness saves one from material contamination.
- If one always remains a servant of Krsna and engages everything in His service, one is accepted as jivan-mukta, a liberated soul, even during his lifetime within the material world.
- One who knows perfectly well that everything belongs to Krsna, that He is the proprietor of everything and that, therefore, everything is engaged in the service of the Lord, naturally has nothing to do with the results of his activities.
- To achieve that success (associating with God in any one of the five transcendental rasas), he (a mahatma) engages all activities-mental, bodily and vocal, everything-in the service of the Supreme Lord, Sri Krsna. That is called full Krsna consciousness.
Conclusion
In summary, the highest perfection of life is realized not by rejecting the material energy, but by expertly utilizing it for its true purpose. Śrīla Prabhupāda makes it clear that everything in existence belongs to the Supreme Personality of Godhead. When a sincere practitioner practically applies this knowledge—dovetailing their mind, body, wealth, and abilities entirely for the pleasure of Śrī Kṛṣṇa—they achieve the pinnacle of renunciation and devotion. This complete absorption in service grants the devotee immense spiritual power and secures their position as a liberated soul, jīvan-mukta, forever free from material contamination.
