The Qualities of the Perfect Devotees of God
Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that achieving perfection in spiritual life means becoming an unalloyed servant of the Supreme Lord. A perfect devotee is not defined by extraordinary mystic powers or immense material wealth, but by a heart completely cleansed of selfish desires. By seeing Śrī Kṛṣṇa everywhere and acting solely for His pleasure, such an advanced soul naturally exhibits all divine qualities and ultimately attains the supreme destination.
Automatic Development of Good Qualities
According to Śrīla Prabhupāda, one does not need to separately cultivate morality or ethics if they are fully surrendered to God. Because a perfect devotee is constantly engaged in the loving service of the Lord, all sublime, godly qualities—such as peacefulness, kindness, and poetic vision—automatically manifest in their character.
- A devotee who may be in any of these categories is automatically qualified by all good qualities, and thus a maha-bhagavata devotee like Maharaja Pariksit is certainly perfect in all respects.
- A pure devotee of the Lord automatically develops all godly qualities, and some of the prominent features of those qualities are as follows: 1) he is kind, peaceful, truthful, equable, faultless, magnanimous, mild, clean, nonpossessive.
- All devotees are more or less poets. Out of 26 qualifications of a perfect devotee, one is poetic sense. So we can write so many poetries in praise of the Lord, or about His pastimes.
Universal Spiritual Vision
A truly advanced Vaiṣṇava possesses a transformed vision, seeing beyond the temporary material coverings of this world. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that a perfect devotee sees the Supreme Lord's energy acting in all things, recognizing Govinda within every atom and treating all living entities with equal respect.
- The perfect devotee does not see the material world as it appears to material eyes, for he sees everywhere the presence of his worshipable Lord in His Paramatma feature.
- The perfect devotee may see many movable and immovable objects, but in everything he sees that the energy of Krsna is acting. As soon as he remembers the energy of Krsna, he immediately remembers Krsna in His personal form.
- The test of a perfect devotee is that he sees Govinda everywhere in this universe, even in every atomic particle (anda-ntara-stha-paramanu-cayantara-stham). This is the perfect vision of a devotee.
Freedom from Material Desires and Discrimination
The primary distinction between a neophyte and a perfect devotee is the complete absence of selfish motives. Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that while ordinary religionists or mystic yogīs may harbor personal ambitions, the mahā-bhāgavata makes no material discrimination and desires nothing but the satisfaction of Śrī Kṛṣṇa.
- Those who are not perfect devotees may discriminate. But a perfect devotee does not discriminate. Why should you imitate a perfect devotee.
- Whereas a jnana-yogi, karma-yogi or hatha-yogi has his own selfish interests, a perfect devotee has no desire other than to please the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Therefore the Lord says that for anyone who is devoted to Him, He is easy to attain.
- Above all the fruitive laborers, speculators, and mystic yogis are the bhaktas, or devotees of Krsna. A bhakta can be perfectly peaceful, whereas the others cannot because everyone but the bhakta, one who has pure love, has desire.
The Ultimate Destination of a Perfect Devotee
The supreme reward for unalloyed devotional service is liberation from the cycle of birth and death. Śrīla Prabhupāda confirms that as soon as a perfect devotee leaves their material body, they are immediately transferred to the spiritual world to participate in the Lord's eternal pastimes.
- When Krsna says tyaktva deham punar janma naiti mam eti (BG 4.9), this means that the perfect devotee, after perfect realization, returns home, back to Godhead.
- After leaving the material body, the perfect devotee takes birth from the womb of a gopi on a planet where Krsna's pastimes are going on.
- One can imagine the swiftness of the spiritual form by comparing it to the speed of the mind. In less than even a moment, a perfect devotee can return home, back to Godhead, immediately after giving up his material body.
Conclusion
Śrīla Prabhupāda vividly illustrates that the perfection of human life culminates in becoming an unalloyed devotee of the Supreme Lord. Such an exalted personality is entirely freed from the contamination of material desires, false ego, and mundane discrimination. Because their consciousness is perpetually absorbed in the loving service of Śrī Kṛṣṇa, all divine qualities automatically decorate their character. Possessing a universal spiritual vision, they perceive the Lord's presence within every atom and every living entity, treating all with equal compassion. Ultimately, this flawless dedication ensures that upon leaving the material body, the perfect devotee bypasses the miseries of material rebirth and swiftly returns to the spiritual world, engaging eternally in the blissful pastimes of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
