The Glories of the Transcendental Yamunā River
Śrīla Prabhupāda extensively glorifies the Yamunā River as a purely spiritual body of water that facilitates the highest loving exchanges between the Lord and His devotees. By studying his teachings, we understand the immense purifying power of the Yamunā, its importance at the confluence of Prayāga, and its eternal role in the divine pastimes of Lord Kṛṣṇa, Lord Balarāma, and Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu.
A Transcendental River
Śrīla Prabhupāda affirms that the Yamunā is an amartya, or transcendental, river. Although it flows within the material world, it possesses immense spiritual potency, and simply by bathing in its clear waters, a conditioned soul becomes thoroughly purified of material contamination.
- Both the Ganges and the Yamuna are amartya (transcendental) rivers, and Yamuna is still more sanctified for the following reasons.
- According to the Varaha Purana, as quoted by Srila Jiva Gosvami, there is no difference between the water of the Ganges and the Yamuna, but when the water of the Ganges is sanctified one hundred times, it is called the Yamuna.
- The water of the Yamuna is naturally very clear and pure, and thus if anyone bathes there three times, undoubtedly he will be very greatly purified externally.
The Sacred Confluence at Prayāga
The convergence of the Ganges, Sarasvatī, and Yamunā rivers forms the sacred triveṇī at Prayāga (Allahabad). Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights that bathing at this confluence, especially during the month of Māgha, attracts millions of pilgrims seeking immense spiritual merit.
- Actually the word triveni indicates the confluence of three rivers - namely the Ganges, Yamuna and Sarasvati. Presently the Sarasvati River is not visible, but the river Ganges and the river Yamuna merge at Allahabad.
- At Prayaga (Allahabad), many thousands of people gather during the month of January to bathe in the confluence of the Ganges and Yamuna.
- If one goes to Prayaga and bathes at the confluence of the Ganges and Yamuna in the month of Magha, he attains the result of giving hundreds and thousands of cows in charity.
The Setting of Lord Kṛṣṇa's Pastimes
The sandy banks and pristine waters of the Yamunā serve as the eternal backdrop for Lord Kṛṣṇa's enchanting pastimes in Vṛndāvana. Śrīla Prabhupāda describes how the river's beautiful atmosphere, filled with blooming lotuses and singing birds, hosted Kṛṣṇa's sporting with the cowherd boys and His melodious rāsa dance with the gopīs.
- This (the riverbank in Vrndavana) must be considered the best place for our sporting and pastimes - SB 10.13.5.
- The humming and chirping of the bees and birds is echoing throughout the beautiful trees in the forest. Also, here (on the riverbank in Vrndavana) the sands are clean and soft - SB 10.13.5.
- May Gopinathaji, who attracts all the gopis with the song of His flute and who has begun the most melodious rasa dace on the bank of the Yamuna in Vamsivata, be merciful upon us.
Lord Balarāma's Divine Pastimes
Lord Balarāma also performed wonderful activities on the shores of the Yamunā. Śrīla Prabhupāda recounts how the river once disobeyed Lord Balarāma's order, prompting Him to forcefully scratch her into hundreds of smaller streams with His plowshare, demonstrating His supreme power.
- Balarama said to Yamuna, "You wretched river! You didn't care for My order. Now I shall teach you a lesson! You didn't come to Me voluntarily. Now with the help of My plow I shall force you to come. I shall divide you into hundreds of scattered streams."
- The river Yamuna still has many small branches due to being scratched by the plowshare of Lord Balarama.
- After bathing in the Yamuna, Lord Balarama, dressed in blue garments and decorated with golden ornaments, looked very attractive to everyone.
Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu's Ecstatic Love
For an exalted Vaiṣṇava, the mere sight of a river can awaken the deepest spiritual emotions. Śrīla Prabhupāda vividly describes how Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, completely absorbed in the mood of Vṛndāvana, would mistake the ocean or ordinary rivers for the Yamunā, jumping into the water in ecstatic love.
- Indeed, as soon as Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu saw the river Yamuna, He immediately made a great sound and jumped into the water. Everyone was filled with fear and trembling to see this.
- Mistaking the sea for the Yamuna, the Lord ran swiftly and jumped into the water, unseen by the others.
- Similarly, whenever Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu saw a river, He immediately accepted it as the river Yamuna. Thus while in the forest He was filled with great ecstatic love, and He danced and fell down crying.
The Ultimate Destination for Devotees
Beyond mere ritualistic purification, the Yamunā represents the highest spiritual aspiration. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that great sages and devotees reside on its banks, not just to wash away sins, but to endlessly chant the holy names of the Lord and achieve perfect Kṛṣṇa consciousness.
- There are many devotees in Vrndavana who regularly bathe in the Yamuna, and this cleanses all the contamination of the material world.
- Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu (NOD 1.2.156): "O lotus-eyed one, when will I be able to always chant Your holy name, and being inspired by that chanting, when will I be able to dance on the banks of the Yamuna?"
- In India there are still many magnificent places for spiritual understanding; there are many rsis and saintly persons living in nice cottages on the banks of the Ganges and Yamuna for purposes of spiritual cultivation.
Conclusion
Śrīla Prabhupāda beautifully illustrates that the Yamunā River is a central, living participant in the Lord's eternal pastimes. From its sacred confluence at Prayāga to its winding path through the forests of Vṛndāvana, the Yamunā offers supreme purification to humanity. However, for a fully surrendered Vaiṣṇava, the Yamunā is much more than a place to cleanse material karma. It is a deeply revered spiritual sanctuary where devotees remember the sweet pastimes of Lord Kṛṣṇa, Lord Balarāma, and Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, constantly chanting the holy names in the perfection of ecstatic love.
