The Formidable and Purifying Nails of the Supreme Lord
Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that every part of the Supreme Personality of Godhead's body is fully potent and transcendental. By studying his instructions regarding the Lord's nails, we discover how they serve as the origin of material elements, act as invincible weapons against atheists, and radiate a pure, spiritual effulgence that liberates the devoted soul.
The Breeding Ground of Elements
When describing the universal form of the Lord, the Vedic literatures attribute the origin of various natural phenomena to specific parts of His divine body. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that the Lord's nails are the generating source for electricity, stones, iron, and even certain species of animals.
- Hairs on God's body are the cause of vegetation, particularly of those trees which are required as ingredients for sacrifice. The hairs on His head and face are reservoirs for clouds, and His nails are the breeding ground of electricity, stones and iron.
- The polished nails of the Lord generate electricity, and the clouds rest on the hairs of His head.
- The horse, mule, camel and elephant are His nails, and wild animals and all quadrupeds are situated in the belt zone of the Lord.
The Ultimate Inconceivable Weapon
To protect His pure devotee Prahlāda, the Lord appeared as Nṛsiṁhadeva to kill the demon Hiraṇyakaśipu. Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights how the Lord perfectly honored the benedictions of Lord Brahmā by slaying the demon without any conventional weapons, using only the sharp, thunderbolt-like nails of His lotus hands.
- Although Brahma granted him all these benedictions, he was killed by the Personality of Godhead in the form of Nrsimha, the Lord's half-lion, half-man incarnation, and no weapon was used to kill him, for he was killed by the Lord's nails.
- Just to keep the word of Lord Brahma, Lord Nrsimhadeva pierced Hiranyakasipu's body with His nails, which were not weapons and were neither living nor dead. Indeed, the nails can be called dead, but at the same time they can be said to be alive.
- He (Nrsimhadeva) killed him (Hiranyakasipu) on His lap, so that he was killed neither on the land nor on the water nor in the sky. The demon was pierced by Nrsimha's nails, which were beyond the human weapons imaginable by Hiranyakasipu.
- I (Prahlada Maharaja) offer my respectful obeisances unto Lord Nrsimhadeva, the source of all power. O my Lord who possesses nails and teeth just like thunderbolts, kindly vanquish our demonlike desires for fruitive activity in this material world.
The Destruction of Demonic Pride
Atheistic demons often become extremely proud of their material opulence and mystic powers, believing they can conquer the universe. However, Śrīla Prabhupāda points out that all such false prestige is instantly shattered and torn to pieces by the supreme strength of the Lord's nails.
- We can simply imagine how powerful Hiranyakasipu was in this material world. But even Hiranyakasipu was cut into small pieces by the nails of Lord Nrsimha. This means that anyone materially powerful cannot stand the strength of the Lord's nails.
- They (demigods) were afraid of Hiranyakasipu. Thus we can simply imagine how powerful Hiranyakasipu was in this material world. But even Hiranyakasipu was cut into small pieces by the nails of Lord Nrsimha.
- These soldiers had come in thousands to fight with Him with raised weapons and were very faithful followers of Hiranyakasipu, but Lord Nrsimhadeva killed all of them merely with the ends of His nails.
- O my Lord, Your hands are very beautiful, like the lotus flower, but with Your long nails You have ripped apart the wasp Hiranyakasipu. Unto You, Lord of the universe, do I offer my humble obeisances.
Piercing the Universal Covering
The Lord's nails are not only weapons of destruction but instruments of supreme purification. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that when Lord Vāmanadeva took His immense cosmic steps, the nail of His toe pierced the universal shell, allowing the sacred water of the Ganges to enter the material world.
- When the Lord's footstep exceeded the height of all the lokas, including Maharloka, Janaloka, Tapoloka and Satyaloka, His nails certainly pierced the covering of the universe.
- Sukadeva Gosvami said: Lord Visnu, the enjoyer of all sacrifices, appeared as Vamanadeva in the sacrificial arena of Bali Maharaja. Then He extended His left foot to the end of the universe and pierced a hole in its covering with the nail of His big toe.
- The nails of the Lord pierced through all these layers and made a hole penetrating into the spiritual world. From this hole, the water of the Ganges infiltrated into this material world, and therefore it is said, pada-nakha-nira janita jana-pavana.
- The water that touched the nails of Your (Lord Vamanadeva's) lotus feet when You pierced through the covering of the universe purifies all living entities in the form of the River Ganges.
Dissipating the Darkness of Ignorance
For a pure yogī or devotee, the nails of the Supreme Lord are objects of deep, blissful meditation. Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that by fixing one's mind on the brilliant, ruby-like effulgence of the Lord's toenails, the thick darkness of material illusion is instantly driven from the heart.
- If a yogi looks upon the marks of the Lord's sole and on the blazing brilliance of His nails, then he can be freed from the darkness of ignorance in material existence.
- This liberation (from the darkness of ignorance in material existence) is not achieved by mental speculation, but by seeing the light emanating from the lustrous toenails of the Lord.
- The nails of Your lotus feet emanate such a great effulgence that they immediately dissipate all the darkness in the heart of a conditioned soul. Kindly show me that form of Yours which always dissipates all kinds of darkness in the heart of a devotee.
- The splendor of their (the Lord's lotus feet) beautiful ruby nails resembles the orb of the moon and dispels the thick gloom of one's heart.
Conclusion
Śrīla Prabhupāda masterfully illustrates that the nails of the Supreme Personality of Godhead are a profound display of His absolute power, wrath, and mercy. On a cosmic scale, the nails of the universal form breed essential material elements like electricity and iron. When the Lord's devotees are threatened, those same nails transform into the ultimate, infallible weapon, as seen when Lord Nṛsiṁhadeva effortlessly ripped apart the mighty Hiraṇyakaśipu, proving that no material strength can defy God's will. Yet, these formidable nails are also the source of the universe's greatest purification; Lord Vāmanadeva's toe nail pierced the cosmic shell to bring forth the sacred Ganges. Ultimately, for the sincere devotee, the glowing, ruby-like effulgence of the Lord's toenails is an object of eternal meditation, providing the divine light that forever banishes the darkness of material ignorance from the heart.
