The Extraordinary Youth of Nimāi Paṇḍita
Long before He accepted the renounced order of life and traveled throughout India as Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya, the Supreme Personality of Godhead was celebrated in Navadvīpa as the brilliant scholar, Nimāi Paṇḍita. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that although His real name was Viśvambhara, the neighborhood villagers affectionately called Him Nimāi. During this period, He displayed the seemingly contradictory qualities of a playful child, a fiercely logical paṇḍita, and a revolutionary leader. Through His extraordinary youth, He firmly established the supremacy of devotional service, dismantled the pride of mundane scholars, and laid the unstoppable foundation for the saṅkīrtana movement.
Miraculous Beginnings and Playful Pastimes
From the very beginning, the appearance of the Lord in the house of Jagannātha Miśra was shrouded in divine mystery. Even as a young boy, His activities were completely extraordinary, baffling His parents and the local brāhmaṇas.
- The pregnancy (of Sacimata) approached its thirteenth month, but still there was no sign of the delivery of the child (Nimai Pandita). Thus Jagannatha Misra became greatly apprehensive.
- In His (Lord Caitanya's) youth He was celebrated as Nimai Pandita, and in the neighborhood villages He was called by that name, although His real name was Visvambhara.
- When the brahmanas complained to His father that He (Nimai Pandita) was splashing them with water instead of attending school, the Lord suddenly appeared before His father as though just coming from school with all His school clothes and books.
The Defeat of Keśava Kāśmīrī
As Nimāi Paṇḍita grew, He established a grammar school and became feared by all scholars for His impenetrable logic. When the undefeated champion Keśava Kāśmīrī arrived in Navadvīpa, he made the mistake of underestimating the young Paṇḍita, leading to his spectacular defeat.
- Kesava Kasmiri was very proud of his literary career; he was far above the first lessons of grammar, and so he thought the position of Nimai Pandita not at all comparable to his own.
- Because it was prearranged that Kesava Kasmiri would have to discuss the sastras with Nimai Pandita, from the very beginning he wanted to bluff the Lord.
- It so happened that Nimai Pandita met Kesava Kasmiri while strolling on the banks of the Ganges. The Lord requested him to compose a Sanskrit verse in praise of the Ganges, and the pandita within a short time composed a hundred slokas.
- Nimai Pandita at once memorized all the slokas without an error. He quoted the sixty-fourth sloka and pointed out certain rhetorical and literary irregularities.
Defending the Saṅkīrtana Movement
Nimāi Paṇḍita was not just a scholar; He was a fearless leader. When the local orthodox Hindus complained to the Muslim magistrate (the Kazi) about the loud chanting of Hare Kṛṣṇa, the Kazi tried to stop the movement. In response, Nimāi organized a massive, peaceful protest.
- Coming to me, the Hindus complained, 'Nimai Pandita has broken the Hindu religious principles. He has introduced the sankirtana system, which we never heard from any scripture.
- When Nimai Pandita heard of this incident He organized a party for civil disobedience. He is the pioneer of the civil disobedience movement in India for the right cause.
The Soft-Hearted Sannyāsī
Despite His massive popularity, His beautiful wife, and His affectionate mother, Nimāi Paṇḍita understood that His mission was for the entire world. To deliver all fallen souls, He made the ultimate sacrifice by leaving Navadvīpa.
- Nimai Pandita was naturally a soft-hearted person, though strong in his principles. He declared that party feelings and sectarianism were the two great enemies of progress and that as long as he should continue to be an inhabitant of Nadia belonging to a certain family, his mission would not meet with complete success.
- He (Nimai Pandita) then resolved to be a citizen of the world by cutting His connection with His particular family, caste and creed, and with this resolution He embraced the position of a sannyasi at Katwa, under the guidance of Kesava Bharati.
Conclusion
Through the pastimes of Nimāi Paṇḍita, Śrīla Prabhupāda vividly illustrates that the Supreme Lord is never bound by the conventions of material society. As the supreme scholar, He systematically dismantled the pride of the world's greatest intellectuals, proving that mundane learning is useless without devotion to Kṛṣṇa. As the pioneer of civil disobedience, He demonstrated that a devotee must be fearless in establishing the dharma of the age—the congregational chanting of the holy names. Ultimately, His transformation from the deeply affectionate Nimāi Paṇḍita into a renounced sannyāsī reveals His supreme compassion, sacrificing His own family happiness to freely distribute love of Godhead to the entire universe.
