The Destination of the Pure Worshiper
Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that the objects we choose to revere ultimately determine our spiritual destination. By learning to distinguish between mundane, bodily attachments and the eternal realities of Kṛṣṇa consciousness, a sincere seeker can avoid the pitfalls of impersonalism and direct their devotion toward what is genuinely worshipable.
The Illusion of Bodily and National Attachments
Śrīla Prabhupāda frequently warns against the dangers of nationalistic and bodily attachments. When human beings foolishly accept the temporary physical body as the self and consider their land of birth to be a worshipable object, they descend to the consciousness of animals, specifically cows and asses.
- A human being who considers the land of his birth worshipable, and who goes to a place of pilgrimage simply to bathe rather than to meet men of transcendental knowledge there, is to be considered like a cow or an ass.
- Thinking in these bodily terms, people consider their wives and children to be theirs and the land of their birth to be worshipable. Thinking thus, people are willing to fight and die for their country.
- In another part of Srimad-Bhagavatam, the acceptance of the body as oneself, the acceptance of others as kinsmen in relationship to this body and the acceptance of the land of one's birth as worshipable are declared to be the products of an animal civilization.
The Supreme Worshipable Lord
The Absolute Truth is the ultimate destination for all spiritual seekers. Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that Lord Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, along with His authorized incarnations, is the only truly worshipable object, completely situated above any mundane speculation or material superiors.
- The Supreme Personality of Godhead is the only worshipable object, and this is perfectly known to persons who are uncontaminated by the modes of material nature.
- The mind cannot catch You by speculation, and words fail to describe You. You are the supreme master of everyone, and therefore You are worshipable for everyone. We offer our respectful obeisances unto You.
- The Supreme is supreme, and He (God) has no worshipable superior.
The Danger of Impersonalism
The philosophy of impersonalism distorts the true nature of worship. Śrīla Prabhupāda exposes the flaw in the Māyāvāda theory, which erroneously claims that because everything is Brahman, everything is equally worshipable, ultimately leading them to reject the eternal, personal form of the Lord.
- The Mayavada philosophy sees everything as being equal in quality with the Supreme Personality of Godhead, or the Supreme Brahman, and therefore sees everything as worshipable.
- On the strength of this theory (seeing everything as being equal in quality with the Supreme Personality of Godhead, therefore seeing everything as worshipable), one thinks that he is God, but this is not a fact.
- The impersonalists sometimes describe five kinds of gods that are worshipable, but because they think that the actual truth is impersonal Brahman, they dispose of all worshipable objects at the ultimate end.
Worshipable Abodes and Paraphernalia
Because the Supreme Lord is absolute, everything intimately connected to Him partakes of His divine nature. Therefore, Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that the Lord's holy abodes, such as Vṛndāvana and Mathurā, along with all their trees and rivers, are fully worshipable.
- Caitanya taught, aradhyo bhagavan vrajesa-tanayas tad-dhama vrndavanam: First of all, Krsna-Vrajendra-nandana, the son of Nanda Maharaja - is aradhya, worshipable. Then, tad-dhama vrndavanam: His dhama, or abode - Vrndavana - is equally worshipable.
- As Vrndavana is worshipable, similarly the paraphernalia in Vrndavana - the trees, roads, river, everything - is worshipable. A pure devotee thus sings, jaya jaya vrndavana-vasi yata jana: All glories to the residents of Vrndavana.
- These places (Dvaraka, Mathura and Gokula) on earth are nondifferent from those original abodes, for they are facsimiles of those original holy places in the transcendental world. They are as good as Sri Krsna Himself and are equally worshipable.
The Authorized Deity Form
To approach the Absolute Truth in our conditioned state, the Lord mercifully manifests in material elements. Śrīla Prabhupāda confirms that the authorized arcā-vigraha (temple Deities) are non-different from Kṛṣṇa and are completely worshipable, contradicting those who view them as mere idols.
- Although the arca-murti, the worshipable Deity form of the Lord, appears to be made of material elements, it is as good as the spiritual forms found in the spiritual Vaikunthalokas.
- The arca-vigraha, or the worshipable Deity in the temple, is a similar manifestation of the Lord for the neophytes.
- The Lord (Caitanya) heard the story of Saksi-gopala with great pleasure because He wanted to impress upon the atheists that the worshipable Deities in the temples approved by the great acaryas are not idols, as alleged by men with a poor fund of knowledge.
The Spiritual Master and Pure Devotees
Spiritual advancement is impossible without the guidance of genuine authorities. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that pure devotees, genuine spiritual masters, and qualified brāhmaṇas who preach the message of Kṛṣṇa are highly worshipable because they dedicate their lives to serving the Lord as tadīya (His intimate associates).
- The sac-cid-ananda-vigraha, guru, Vaisnavas and things used by them must be considered tadiya and without a doubt worshipable by all living beings.
- Devotees whose tongues are decorated always with prayers to Lord Krsna are always given respect even by the great saintly persons and sages, and such devotees are actually worshipable by the demigods.
- The brahmanas preach the cult of Krsna consciousness all around the world, and therefore, although they worship Krsna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the Lord also recognizes them as worshipable. The relationship is reciprocal.
Conclusion
Śrīla Prabhupāda decisively shifts our perspective from mundane reverence to spiritual truth. As long as a person remains bound by the bodily conception of life, they will mistakenly consider the land of their birth to be the ultimate object of devotion, effectively remaining in an animalistic state of consciousness. Conversely, the impersonalists err by claiming everything is universally worshipable, thereby losing the personal aspect of God. True spiritual education reveals that the Supreme Lord, Kṛṣṇa, and everything intimately related to Him—such as His eternal abode of Vṛndāvana, His arcā-vigraha Deity forms, His pure devotees, and the spiritual master—are the actual objects of supreme worship. Furthermore, elders and protectors in society are given a worshipable status primarily to help guide their dependents out of material darkness. By directing our worship toward these pure, transcendental realities, we free ourselves from material illusion and reawaken our eternal, loving relationship with the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
