The Controlling Deities - The Adhidaiva Principle
In the Vedic view of the universe, there is no such thing as "dead matter" acting independently. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that every aspect of the material creation, from the movements of the planets to the blinking of an eye, is overseen by a controlling deity (adhidaiva). These demigods are appointed administrators who manage the affairs of the universe under the direction of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, ensuring that the complex machinery of the cosmos functions smoothly.
The Adhidaiva Principle
We often think of our senses as our own, but Śrīla Prabhupāda points out that they are actually empowered and monitored by higher beings. This is the adhidaiva principle. We cannot see unless the sun-god supplies light; we cannot feel touch unless the wind-god acts. These controlling deities hold the "license" for our sense gratification, and violating their regulations leads to suffering.
- Each and every individual in the material world is controlled by the higher demigods. For example, we have our senses, but the senses are controlled by superior controlling deities. We cannot see without light, and the supreme controller of light is the sun.
- The individual person possessing different instruments of senses is called the adhyatmic person, and the individual controlling deity of the senses is called adhidaivic. The embodiment seen on the eyeballs is called the adhibhautic person.
- The senses are, so to speak, offering a license for the conditioned souls, who are to use them properly under the control of the controlling deity deputed by the Supreme Lord.
- The peculiarity of the gradual development of the different senses is simultaneously supported by their controlling deities. It is to be understood, therefore, that the activities of the sense organs are controlled by the will of the Supreme.
Specific Correspondences of the Senses
The Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam gives a detailed analysis of which deity controls which function. Śrīla Prabhupāda lists numerous examples: Varuṇa controls the tongue and liquids, the fire-god controls speech, the Dig-devatās control the ears, and Mitra controls the function of evacuation. This intricate network connects the microcosm of the body with the macrocosm of the universe.
- The mouth becomes the resting place for the tongue, which tastes all the different juices, of which the controlling deity is Varuna. This suggests, therefore, that Varuna was also generated along with the development of the tongue.
- When the ears of the gigantic form became manifested, all the controlling deities of the directions entered into them with the hearing principles, by which all the living entities hear and take advantage of sound.
- O Narada, the evacuating outlet of the universal form of the Lord is the abode of the controlling deity of death, Mitra, and the evacuating hole and the rectum of the Lord is the place of envy, misfortune, death, hell, etc.
- The controlling deity of touch is the air passing within the body, and the controlling deity of the hairs on the body is Osadhya.
Departmental Management of the Universe
Just as the body has controllers, so does the universe at large. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that demigods like Indra (rain), Varuṇa (water), and others manage the elements. Even trees and rivers have predominating deities. These personalities are not independent gods but departmental heads working under the supreme government of Kṛṣṇa.
- The example of Indra is very appropriate in this connection. The king of heaven is the controlling deity for arranging clouds and supplying rains in the universe, as such he does not have to take the trouble to dig a well for his personal water supply.
- In Vedic literatures we find that there is a controlling deity of the water; similarly, there is a controlling deity of the trees.
- The demigods, or controlling deities, are entrusted with departmental management of all the different functions of the material world.
- It was the predominating deity of the trees that delivered the daughter (Marisa). In this connection, Srila Jiva Gosvami Prabhupada states, vrksah tad-adhisthatr-devatah: "The 'trees' means the controlling deity of those trees."
Relation to the Supreme Lord
Ultimately, all controlling deities are expansions or manifestations of the Lord's energy. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that they have no power of their own; their authority is derived from the Supreme Personality of Godhead. When one worships these demigods, it is an indirect and less intelligent way of worshipping the Supreme, as everything they award is actually sanctioned by Him.
- All the controlling deities like Visnu, Brahma and Siva are different manifestations of the Paramatma feature of the Supreme Personality of Godhead Sri Krsna, who exhibits himself in such manners by entering into each and every universe generated from Him.
- The controlling deities of all the above-mentioned physical elements are empowered expansions of Lord Visnu. They are embodied by eternal time under the external energy, and they are His parts and parcels.
- The demigods are engaged by the Lord as controlling deities of material affairs, and according to the Bhagavad-gita, when a demigod is worshiped the process is accepted as the indirect method for worshiping the Supreme Lord.
Conclusion
Śrīla Prabhupāda concludes that while we may be proud of our sensory powers, we are actually dependent on the controlling deities for every action. Understanding this hierarchy should lead one to the ultimate controller, Kṛṣṇa, who is the master of all demigods and the source of all senses (Hṛṣīkeśa).
