The Changing Yugas and the Process of Religion
The universe operates on a grand cosmic timeline divided into distinct ages, or yugas. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that just as seasons change continuously, these cosmic ages rotate, bringing predictable shifts in human lifespan, memory, and religious inclination. Through his teachings, we understand how the Supreme Personality of Godhead mercifully provides a specific spiritual process for every age.
The Cycles of Cosmic Time
The duration of material existence is calculated using immense cosmic measurements far beyond ordinary human comprehension. Śrīla Prabhupāda describes that these cycles are governed by the lives of demigods like Lord Brahmā and Manu, with a single yuga spanning hundreds of thousands to millions of earthly years.
- As there are seasonal changes within a year, so there are changing ages in the duration of the manifest cosmic world. These changing ages are called yugas, or periods.
- An age of Manu, which is the duration of Manu's life, is calculated to last seventy-two yugas. One yuga consists of 4,300,000 years.
- 4 yugas, rotating a 1000 times, comprise 1 day of Brahma, the creator god, and the same number comprise 1 night. Brahma lives 100 of such "years" and then dies. These "100 years" by earth calculations total to 311 trillion and 40 million earth years.
The Progressive Degradation of Society
With the passage of each yuga, human civilization undergoes a natural, unavoidable process of degradation. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that from the pious Satya-yuga down to the current Kali-yuga, mankind's lifespan, virtues, and spiritual qualities diminish significantly, replaced by increasing ignorance and strife.
- With the progressive advance of each new yuga, the duration of human life is reduced by ninety percent - from one hundred thousand to ten thousand, from ten thousand to one thousand, and from one thousand to one hundred.
- In the Treta-yuga vice is introduced, and this yuga lasts 1,296,000 years. In the Dvapara-yuga there is an even greater decline in virtue and religion, vice increasing, and this yuga lasts 864,000 years.
- Finally in Kali-yuga (the yuga we have now been experiencing over the past 5,000 years) there is an abundance of strife, ignorance, irreligion and vice, true virtue being practically nonexistent, and this yuga lasts 432,000 years.
The Lord's Appearance in Every Age
Despite the inevitable decline in material conditions, the Supreme Personality of Godhead never abandons the conditioned souls. Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights that the Lord appears in every age, manifesting different bodily complexions and specific forms, to protect religious principles and encourage surrender. Because He does not appear directly as a līlā-avatāra in Kali-yuga, He is famously known as Tri-yuga.
- Although the Supreme Lord, Krsna, is full in Himself, He appears in different yugas to demand the surrender of the conditioned souls so that they will benefit by becoming free from the material clutches.
- Garga Muni informed Nanda Maharaja, "This child (Krsna) has taken different bodily complexions in different yugas (millennia). First of all He assumed the color white, then the color red, and then the color yellow, and now He has assumed the color black."
- Because the Lord is not directly perceived in Kali-yuga but is directly known in the other three yugas, His name is Triyuga.
The Supreme Process for Kali-yuga
Because the capacities of humanity change with each yuga, the Supreme Lord prescribes a specific method for spiritual realization suitable for that time. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that the difficult meditational and ritualistic practices of past ages are replaced in Kali-yuga by the simple, joyful process of chanting the holy names of the Lord.
- The sage (Karabhajana Rsi) was informing Maharaja Nimi (in SB 11.5.36) about the people’s duty to worship the Supreme Personality of Godhead according to different processes in different yugas.
- In the other three yugas - Satya, Treta and Dvapara - people perform different types of spiritual activities. Whatever results they achieve in that way, they can achieve in Kali-yuga simply by chanting the Hare Krsna maha-mantra.
- There are different yugas, millennium, and there are different processes. In this age, this is the process, kalau sankirtana, hari-kirtanat, simply chanting. Sit down anywhere, everywhere, and go on chanting, chanting, chanting.
Conclusion
The rotation of the yugas demonstrates the temporary and constantly degrading nature of the material world. As humanity descends further into the depths of Kali-yuga, material miseries and ignorance naturally peak. However, the Supreme Personality of Godhead continually adapts His mercy to rescue the fallen souls. By recognizing the limitations of our current age and adopting the authorized process of hari-kīrtana, anyone can overcome the heavy influence of the material modes and attain the ultimate perfection of spiritual life, regardless of the degraded age in which they live.
