The Brahma-sampradāya – Following in the Footsteps of Lord Brahmā
In the pursuit of spiritual realization, independent speculation is a guaranteed path to failure. The Vedic system emphasizes that absolute knowledge descends through a chain of authorized spiritual masters, known as a sampradāya. Śrīla Prabhupāda frequently highlights the position of Lord Brahmā, the first created being in the universe, who received Vedic knowledge directly from the Supreme Lord and initiated the Brahma-sampradāya. As one of the twelve mahājanas (great authorities) of religion, Lord Brahmā set the perfect standard for devotional service. By abandoning mental concoction and humbly following in the footsteps of Lord Brahmā and the subsequent ācāryas in his line, the conditioned soul can easily achieve the ultimate spiritual perfection.
The Great Authorities (Mahājanas)
The principles of religion (dharma) are enacted directly by the Supreme Personality of Godhead and cannot be manufactured by ordinary human beings. To understand these principles, one must follow the twelve recognized authorities, which include Brahmā, Śiva, Nārada, and Prahlāda. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that one does not need to be an original thinker to be spiritually advanced; true authority comes simply from strictly following the established authorities.
- No one can manufacture a religious principle by imperfect speculation. One must follow in the footsteps of great authorities like Brahma, Siva, Narada, Manu, Kumara, Kapila, Prahlada, Bhisma, Sukadeva Gosvami, Yamaraja, Janaka, etc.
- One must follow in the footsteps of great authorities like Brahma, Siva, Narada, Manu, the Kumaras, Kapila, Prahlada, Bhisma, Sukadeva Gosvami, Yamaraja, Janaka, and Bali Maharaja.
- Kunti is authority. How she has become authority? Because she has followed the authorities - Brahma, Narada, Svayambhu. Those who are strictly following the statements of the authorities, they are also authority.
- If we simply follow these big, big devotees (Brahma, Siva, Narada, four Kumaras, Kapiladeva, Prahlada Maharaja, Bhisma, Janaka Maharaja, Vyasadeva, Sukadeva Gosvami. Bali Maharaja and Yamaraja), then our life is successful.
The Lineage of the Brahmā-sampradāya
The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) represents the Brahma-Madhva-Gauḍīya-sampradāya. This means the teachings originate from Lord Kṛṣṇa, pass to Lord Brahmā, continue through Madhvācārya, and flow down to Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and the present-day ācāryas. By remaining faithful to this specific disciplic succession and following the footsteps of the predecessors, success in transcendental loving service is guaranteed.
- We follow Lord Brahma. Just like we belong to the Brahma-sampradaya, Madhvacarya-sampradaya. Gaudiya..., Madhva-Gaudiya-sampradaya.
- We are disciplic succession from Brahma; therefore our process is to follow the footsteps of acaryas. Acaryopasanam.
- One should engage in the devotional service of the Lord and follow in the footsteps of previous acaryas, beginning with Lord Brahma and others.
- Brahma and persons in the line of his disciplic succession who follow in his footsteps are always successful in the discharge of loving transcendental service to the Supreme Lord.
Repeating the Prayers of the Predecessors
A unique feature of following the mahājanas is the practice of repeating their prayers. Rather than inventing new ways to worship, a devotee finds immense spiritual potency in chanting the exact glorifications offered by great souls like Lord Brahmā. The Brahma-saṁhitā, composed by Lord Brahmā, contains essential prayers (like govindam ādi-puruṣam) that are sung daily in Vaiṣṇava temples around the world.
- One can offer prayers to the Supreme Personality of Godhead directly, but if one repeats the prayers offered by great devotees like Lord Siva and Lord Brahma, or if one follows in the footsteps of great personalities, one can please the Supreme Personality of Godhead very easily.
- Devotees following in the footsteps of Lord Brahma, pray, govindam adi-purusam tam aham bhajami, worshiping the adi-purusa, the supreme truth, Govinda.
- Following in the footsteps of such liberated souls (like Brahma), who are able to vibrate real transcendental sound, can lead one to the highest stage of devotion, and thus one can become a maha-bhagavata.
Crossing the Ocean of Nescience
The material world is often compared to a vast, insurmountable ocean of ignorance (nescience). For those who try to cross it by their own strength or mental speculation, the task is impossible. However, Śrīla Prabhupāda assures us that by taking shelter of the path blazed by Lord Brahmā and the disciplic succession, the ocean shrinks to the size of a puddle in a calf's hoofprint, and the doors of liberation swing wide open.
- We have to follow in the footsteps of such devotees (as Siva, Yamaraja, Brahma, the Kumaras, Kapila, etc.), for by this one easy process one can cross the great ocean of nescience just as one might cross a small hole created by the hoof of a calf.
- Anyone who follows in the footsteps of recognized devotees, such as Brahma, Siva, the Kumaras, Manu, Kapila, King Prahlada, King Janaka, Sukadeva Gosvami, Yamaraja & their followers in disciplic succession, very easily finds the door of liberation open.
- Following in the footsteps of Lord Brahma, any person, even up to this day, can attain the same perfection by following the path of the paramahamsa as recommended herein. Lord Caitanya also approved of this method of self-realization for men in this age.
- Supernatural vision is bestowed upon devotees like Brahma and upon those who follow the footsteps of pure devotees like him.
Conclusion
The path of Kṛṣṇa consciousness is remarkably simple, provided one does not attempt to artificially bypass the authorities. Lord Brahmā, as the first spiritual master of the universe and the head of the Brahma-sampradāya, perfectly demonstrated how to receive, realize, and distribute transcendental knowledge. By faithfully following in his footsteps—accepting the authority of the mahājanas, adhering strictly to the ācāryas in the disciplic succession, and singing the profound prayers handed down through this lineage—the conditioned soul bypasses the pitfalls of mental speculation. What was once a terrifying ocean of material existence is effortlessly crossed, leading the sincere practitioner to the highest stages of pure devotional service and supernatural spiritual vision.
