The Bona Fide Lineage of the Śrī-sampradāya
The transmission of perfect spiritual knowledge requires a pure conduit connecting the conditioned soul to the Supreme Lord. Emphasizing the absolute necessity of receiving teachings through an unbroken disciplic succession, Śrīla Prabhupāda continuously highlights the authority of the four recognized Vaiṣṇava lineages. Among these, the Śrī Sampradāya holds a highly exalted position in the spiritual history of the world.
The Four Bona Fide Lineages
In the Vedic tradition, attempting to manufacture one's own religious system is considered a severe spiritual offense that yields no result. Drawing from the Padma Purāṇa, Śrīla Prabhupāda points out that any mantra received outside of an authorized disciplic succession is ultimately fruitless. To genuinely understand the Absolute Truth, a seeker must carefully take shelter of one of the four bona fide sampradāyas descending from the beginning of creation.
- In the Padma Purana it is also said, sampradaya-vihina ye mantras te nisphala matah. There are four sampradayas, or disciplic successions, namely the Brahma-sampradaya, the Rudra-sampradaya, the Sri sampradaya and the Kumara-sampradaya.
- To understand the Absolute Truth, there are four recognized sampradayas: the Brahma-sampradaya, the Rudra-sampradaya, the Kumara-sampradaya, and the Sri-sampradaya.
- One must take shelter of one of these four (the Brahma-sampradaya, the Rudra-sampradaya, the Sri-sampradaya, the Kumara-sampradaya) sampradayas in order to understand the most confidential religious system.
- These are four bona fide Sampradayas (Brahma Sampradaya, Shree Sampradaya, Nimbarka Sampradaya, Rudra Sampradaya) that are accepted by the bona fide spiritualists.
The Descent from the Goddess of Fortune
Each authorized succession originates from a highly elevated personality who receives transcendental knowledge directly from the Supreme Lord. Tracing the divine roots of this specific lineage, Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that the Śrī Sampradāya descends directly from Lakṣmī, the eternal goddess of fortune. As a direct associate of the Lord, she flawlessly preserves and distributes the pure science of devotional service to her followers.
- Principally there are four sampradayas; Nimbarka sampradaya coming from the four Kumaras; Sri Sampradaya coming from Laksmi; Rudra Sampradaya coming from Lord Siva; and Brahma Sampradaya.
- The succession from Lord Siva (Sambhu) is called the Rudra-sampradaya, the one from the goddess of fortune, Laksmiji, is called the Sri-sampradaya, and the one from the Kumaras is called the Kumara-sampradaya.
- There are four Sampradayas from the beginning of the creation. One is called Brahma Sampradaya, and is coming down by disciplic succession from Brahma; another Sampradaya is coming down from Laksmi, called Shree Sampradaya.
- We have to accept Krsna through the disciplic succession. There are four sampradayas, disciplic successions. One comes from Lord Brahma (the Brahma-sampradaya), and another comes from Laksmi, the goddess of fortune, - the Sri-sampradaya.
The Prominence of Rāmānujācārya
Throughout history, the Lord sends empowered representatives to strengthen and propagate these eternal lineages. Highlighting a key historical figure, Śrīla Prabhupāda frequently refers to the profound influence of Rāmānujācārya within the Śrī Sampradāya. Under his guidance, the philosophy of pure devotion was rigorously defended against impersonalism, firmly establishing the worship of the Supreme Lord across India.
- Yamunacarya happened to be the spiritual master of Ramanujacarya. He became a great devotee in the Sri-sampradaya.
- It is not that we have manufactured a sampradaya; rather, our sampradaya stems from Lord Brahma. There is also the Ramanuja-sampradaya, which comes from the Sri-sampradaya, and there is the Visnu Svami-sampradaya, which comes from the Rudra-sampradaya.
- As far as the Sri Vaisnavas are concerned, beginning with Ramanujacarya, they also worshiped Deities of Sita-Rama. Sita-Rama Deities are also being worshiped in Tirupati and other places.
- Acarya, who is acarya? Then next question will be: who is acarya? Evam parampara-praptam imam rajarsayo viduh (BG 4.2). Those who are coming the acarya-sampradaya. Sri-sampradaya, Rudra-sampradaya, the four sampradayas.
The Supreme Object of Worship
Despite slight variations in philosophical presentation, the ultimate conclusion of all authorized Vaiṣṇava lineages is identical. Confirming this essential unity, Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the Śrī Sampradāya perfectly agrees with the other sampradāyas in accepting Kṛṣṇa, or His expansions like Viṣṇu, as the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Their primary objective is always the unalloyed worship of the Supreme Lord in His personal feature.
- Sri-sampradaya, Brahma-sampradaya, Rudra-sampradaya. They are all in agreement that Krsna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
- All the four (Brahma, Sri, Kumaras and Rudra) Sampradayas above mentioned, they are after worshiping the Supreme Lord Visnu, in His different Expansions, and some of them are in favor of worshiping Radha Krishna.
- There are four sects of worshipful devotees of the Lord, and the chief amongst them are the Brahma-sampradaya, Rudra-sampradaya and Sri-sampradaya, descending directly from Lord Brahma, Lord Siva and the goddess of fortune, Laksmi, respectively.
- These four sampradayas, or disciplic successions of knowledge and transcendence, are called the Brahma-sampradaya, Rudra-sampradaya, Sri-sampradaya, and Kumara-sampradaya.
Conclusion
The science of God realization is not a subject for mental speculation; it must be received from a perfect, authorized source. As Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies, the Śrī Sampradāya represents a flawless channel of transcendental knowledge descending from the goddess of fortune herself. By taking shelter of such a bona fide disciplic succession, the sincere soul is guaranteed a safe passage back to the spiritual world.
