The Absolute Truth of God's Plenary Expansions
Śrīla Prabhupāda reveals the magnificent science of the Absolute Truth by explaining how the Supreme Lord multiplies Himself into countless forms. These forms, known as plenary expansions, are fully divine and eternally engaged in cosmic administration, spiritual reciprocation, and the deliverance of the conditioned souls.
The Original Personality of Godhead
Śrī Kṛṣṇa is the primeval fountainhead from whom all other manifestations emerge. Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that while Lord Nārāyaṇa and the various expansions are fully God, Śrī Kṛṣṇa remains the original candle from which all other identical candles are lit.
- Krsna's different expansions - namely Narayana, the quadruple expansion of Vasudeva, Sankarsana, Pradyumna and Aniruddha, as well as partial plenary expansions like Matsya, the incarnation of a fish - combine together and appear with the body of Krsna.
- It is not contradictory for a devotee to call the Supreme Lord by any one of the various names of His plenary expansions, because the original Personality of Godhead includes all such categories.
- Had Krsna been a plenary expansion of Narayana, the original verse would have been differently composed; indeed, its order would have been reversed. But there cannot be mistakes, illusion, cheating or imperfect perception in the words of liberated sages.
- In the spiritual world, however, beyond the mahat-tattva, there is no question of incarnations, but there are plenary expansions of the Lord in different Vaikunthas.
The Omnipotence of Viṣṇu-tattva
There is no difference in power or divinity between the Lord and His personal expansions. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that all plenary expansions are viṣṇu-tattva, meaning they are equally potent, infallible, and absolute in every respect.
- All the plenary expansions of the Personality of Godhead are equally potent, as confirmed in the Brahma-samhita (BS 5.38): The Lord expands Himself as the flames of a fire expand one after another.
- He (God) can so exist because He is all-perfect and omnipotent. Everything other than Him, including His plenary expansions, the visnu-tattvas, is His part and parcel.
- The svamsa plenary expansion of the Supreme Personality is as powerful as the Supreme Personality of Godhead Himself.
- The personal plenary expansions are visnu-tattvas, and the separated expansions are living entities. Since the living entities are very small, they are sometimes described as the marginal energy of the Lord.
The Puruṣa-avatāras and Cosmic Creation
To interact with the material energy without becoming entangled, the Lord manifests specific expansions. Śrīla Prabhupāda describes how the three puruṣa-avatāras—Mahā-Viṣṇu, Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu, and Kṣīrodakaśāyī Viṣṇu—expertly orchestrate the creation and maintenance of the universes.
- The Paramatma feature of the Personality of Godhead is one of three plenary expansions, or visnu-tattvas, collectively known as the purusa-avataras. One of these visnu-tattvas who is within the universe is known as Ksirodakasayi Visnu.
- In the tenth and eleventh verses Krsnadasa Kaviraja describes Garbhodakasayi Visnu and Ksirodakasayi Visnu, successive plenary expansions of Maha-Visnu. Brahma appears upon a lotus growing from the navel of Garbhodakasayi Visnu - CC Intro.
- That Lord Krsna is Narayana, the father of Brahma, because Lord Krsna’s plenary expansion Garbhodakasayi Visnu, after placing Himself on the Garbha Ocean, created Brahma from His own body.
- Sankarsana is the origin of Karana Visnu, who is the original form who creates the universes, and that Sankarsana is but a plenary expansion of Sri Nityananda Rama.
The Supersoul Within All
The Supreme Lord is never far away from the conditioned soul. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that by expanding as the Paramātmā (Supersoul), the Lord personally accompanies every living entity in the material world, sitting in their heart as the ultimate guide and witness.
- The heart of every living entity is the seat of the Supersoul, Paramatma, a plenary expansion of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Without His presence the living entity cannot get into the working energy according to his past deeds.
- It is stated clearly here (in SB 3.29.22) that the Supreme Personality of Godhead, in His plenary expansion of Supersoul, is present in all living entities.
- The Supreme Personality of Godhead in His plenary expansion as the Paramatma, or Supersoul, sits in everyone's heart and can understand the attitudes and desires of His devotees.
- The Supersoul, the plenary expansion of the Personality of Godhead, exists in everyone's heart, but in the heart of the devotee He reveals Himself as ever-increasingly new.
Plenary Expansions vs. Separated Parts
A common illusion is the belief that the living entity is equal to God. Śrīla Prabhupāda draws a sharp philosophical distinction between the Lord's personal, unlimited expansions (svāṁśa) and the infinitesimal, separated living entities (vibhinnāṁśa).
- The Supreme Lord has two kinds of parts and parcels: the living entity is called vibhinnamsa, and the Paramatma, or the plenary expansion of the Supreme Lord, is called svamsa.
- The Supreme Lord expands Himself in two ways - by personal plenary expansions and separated minute expansions.
- Expansions of the Lord are limitless, but some of them are the living entities. The living entities are not as powerful as the Lord's plenary expansions, and therefore there are two different types of expansions.
- If all of them (all species of life) were plenary expansions of the Supreme Absolute Truth, then there would be no question of liberation, because Brahman would already be liberated.
The Infinite Vaikuṇṭha Planets
The spiritual world is vast and richly populated. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that the innumerable Vaikuṇṭha planets are each governed by a specific plenary expansion of the Lord, providing endless facilities for pure devotees to render loving service.
- The Supreme Person, in His different plenary expansions, lives on innumerable Vaikuntha planets, and the chief planet is Krsnaloka. Just as within the material universe the chief planet is the sun, in the spiritual world the chief planet is Krsnaloka.
- The unconditioned marginal potency acts in the spiritual kingdom, and the Lord, by His different plenary expansions, maintains them in different transcendental relations displayed in the spiritual sky.
- The devotee, who wants to enjoy the association of the Lord, enters into the Vaikuntha planets, which are innumerable, and the Supreme Lord by His plenary expansions as Narayana with four hands and with different names associates with him.
- No one can reach the spiritual sky or enter into the eternal abode (Vaikuntha Goloka Vrndavana) of the Lord without the proper understanding of Krsna and His plenary expansion Visnu.
The Vision of the Pure Devotee
Spiritual realization naturally changes how one perceives the world. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that a true devotee sees beyond external bodies, perceiving both the minute spirit soul and the localized plenary expansion of the Lord situated together in the heart.
- A devotee's vision must be perfect. He should ignore bodily distinctions and should see only the presence of the part and parcel of the Supreme Lord, and the Lord Himself in His plenary expansion as Supersoul. That is the vision of a pure devotee.
- He (the devotee) should ignore bodily distinctions and should see only the presence of the part and parcel of the Supreme Lord, and the Lord Himself in His plenary expansion as Supersoul.
- Because the Supreme Personality of Godhead has entered this cosmic manifestation in the form of His plenary expansion and caused the creation, the Vaisnava philosophers see everything in this material world in relationship with the Supreme Lord.
- Even in the nonliberated stage, a living entity can be directly engaged in the transcendental loving service of the Personality of Godhead Lord Krsna or His plenary expansions like Rama and Narasimha.
Conclusion
Śrīla Prabhupāda expertly delineates the multifaceted nature of the Absolute Truth by describing God's plenary expansions. The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Śrī Kṛṣṇa, is not limited to a single form; by His inconceivable potency, He effortlessly multiplies into thousands of identical, fully potent forms (viṣṇu-tattva) such as Nārāyaṇa, Rāma, and the puruṣa-avatāras. While these plenary expansions expertly manage the creation, maintenance, and annihilation of the cosmic manifestation, they also reside in the hearts of all living entities as the Paramātmā, demonstrating the Lord's intimate care for every soul. By understanding the distinction between the all-powerful plenary expansions and the minute living entities (jīvas), one avoids the trap of impersonalism and false ego. Ultimately, by developing pure vision and rendering devotional service to the Lord and His expansions, the sincere soul becomes eligible to enter the infinite Vaikuṇṭha planets for a life of eternal bliss.
