The Absolute Power of God's Name
Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that the holy name of God is the direct sound incarnation of the Supreme Lord. By studying his instructions, we can understand the non-different nature of the Lord and His name, why Kṛṣṇa is the supreme name, and how chanting instantly purifies the conditioned soul of all material contamination.
The Absolute Nature of the Holy Name
In the material world, a person and their name are completely different—chanting "water" will not quench your thirst. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that in the absolute spiritual world, however, the Supreme Personality of Godhead and His transcendental name are entirely identical and carry the exact same potency.
- Because God is absolute, there is no difference between His name and He Himself. In this material calculation, if you want water, simply by chanting "water, water," you won't get water. The water substance is different from the name - water.
- By our material calculation we see a difference between the name and the substance, but in the spiritual world the Absolute is always absolute: the name, form, qualities and pastimes of the Absolute are all as good as the Absolute Himself.
- In the absolute world, the name Krsna is the transcendental sound representation of the Lord. There is no potential difference between His quality, name, form, etc. If we chant the name of the Lord, Hare Krsna, that has as much potency as the Lord Himself.
- His (the Supreme Lord's) name is not material; otherwise how could one get liberation by chanting Hare Krsna, Hare Rama? The names of the Lord like Rama and Krsna are nondifferent from the person Rama and Krsna.
The Supreme Name of God
While the Lord is sometimes described as nameless because He lacks material designations, He has millions of spiritual names derived from His activities and qualities. Among all these names, Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that the name Kṛṣṇa is the most complete and principal name because it means "the all-attractive one."
- God may have many thousands of names, but the most perfect name which we can give to the Supreme Personality of Godhead is Krsna. Krsna means "All-attractive." God must be all-attractive. It is not that God is attractive for a certain class of men and not attractive for others.
- God has many names, and according to your conception, you can have God's name also. But out of all those names, many thousands and unlimited different types of names, Krsna is the principal name because Krsna means all-attractive.
- Krsna is the ultimate goal of spiritual science. Of course when we speak of Krsna we refer to God. There are many names for God throughout the world and throughout the universe, but Krsna is the supreme name according to Vedic knowledge.
- Considered with scrutiny, the conclusion of nondevotees, who say that God has no name, and that of devotees, who know that His name is not material, are practically the same. The Supreme Personality of Godhead has no material name.
The Power of Purification
The holy name of the Lord is uniquely powerful; it does not depend on a person's prior qualifications to act. Śrīla Prabhupāda cites the history of Ajāmila to prove that even if the Lord's name is chanted unintentionally or with impure motives, it still completely eradicates the reactions of sinful life.
- As for purification, no one can be more pure than devotees. Anyone who once utters the name of Visnu immediately becomes purified, inside and outside - yah smaret pundarikaksam.
- Because at the time of death he (Ajamila) chanted the name of Narayana, although he was calling not for the Supreme Lord Narayana but for his son named Narayana, he was saved from the hands of Yamaraja.
- Simply by chanting the name of Narayana to call his son, Ajamila attained salvation. This means that Narayana is not an ordinary mundane name; it is nonmaterial. The word anama indicates that the names of the Supreme do not belong to this material world.
- Constant remembrance of the Lord's name, fame, qualities, and so on automatically nullifies the reactions of all vices and invokes the blessings of the Lord.
The Folly of Material Conceptions
Mundane scholars and Māyāvādī philosophers commit a great offense by attempting to equate the names of demigods or ordinary humans with the holy name of God. Śrīla Prabhupāda warns that treating the Supreme Lord's name as a material vibration or a product of imagination completely blocks one's spiritual progress.
- The Lord is Supreme, and no one is equal to or greater than Him. Consequently if one thinks that the Lord's names are nondifferent from the names of demigods, he offends. The Supreme Lord and the demigods should never be considered on the same level.
- One who manufactures names, forms, qualities or paraphernalia pertaining to the Supreme Personality of Godhead cannot understand Him, since He is beyond creation.
- In their impersonal way, they (the impersonalists) utter the name of impersonal Brahman, spirit soul. In other words, they indulge in indirect indications of the Absolute Truth.
- One considers the Lord’s names material due to a poor fund of knowledge.
The Recommended Sacrifice for this Age
In every age, there is a specific process for spiritual realization. Śrīla Prabhupāda declares that in the current degraded age of Kali, the only authorized and effective yajña (sacrifice) is the congregational chanting of the holy names, particularly the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra.
- In the present age, Kali-yuga, people are very much sinful and are consequently suffering greatly. Therefore Krsna has incarnated in the form of His name, as found in the maha-mantra: Hare Krsna.
- Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu also confirmed that in this age of Kali, Krsna has descended in the form of sound vibration. Sound is one of the forms which the Lord takes. Therefore it is stated that there is no difference between Krsna and His name.
- In the Kali-yuga, the maximum duration of life being one hundred years only and that combined with various difficulties, the recommended process of self-realization is that of hearing and chanting of the holy name, fame, and pastimes of the Lord.
- In this age, although people are greatly sinful, simply chanting the Hare Krsna maha-mantra can relieve them from the reactions of their sins. Eka krsna-name: only by chanting Krsna’s name is this possible.
The Revelation of Transcendental Knowledge
Spiritual realization is not achieved through mental speculation, but through divine revelation. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that when a devotee sincerely chants the holy name, the Supreme Lord becomes so pleased that He automatically reveals His form, qualities, and intimate pastimes within the devotee's heart.
- As soon as a pure devotee engages himself in the pure devotional service of hearing, chanting and remembering the name, fame and activities of the Lord, at once He becomes visible to the transcendental eyes of the pure devotee.
- Padma Purana says that only when one becomes spiritually saturated by the transcendental service to the Lord, then, are the transcendental name, form, quality and pastimes of the Lord revealed to you.
- As the universal elements are both within and without, similarly the Lord's name, form, quality, pastimes, entourage, etc., as they are described in the revealed scriptures, are factually being televised in the heart of the devotee.
- Although we cannot perceive the transcendental nature of the Supreme Lord, His name, fame, and activities, if we establish ourselves in Krsna consciousness, gradually God will reveal Himself before us.
Conclusion
Śrīla Prabhupāda unequivocally establishes that the holy name of God is not a mundane vibration, but the absolute, spiritual incarnation of the Lord Himself. Because Kṛṣṇa and His name are non-different, chanting the holy name brings one into direct contact with the Supreme Personality of Godhead. While impersonalists and materialists foolishly try to minimize the name or equate it with the names of demigods, the pure devotees understand that chanting Kṛṣṇa's name is the supreme yajña and the only means of deliverance in the dark age of Kali. Even an accidental or incomplete chanting of the Lord's name, as proven by Ajāmila, possesses the unimaginable power to burn away lifetimes of sinful reactions. For those who chant with sincere devotion, the holy name acts as the master key, unlocking the heart and televising the glorious form, qualities, and eternal pastimes of the Absolute Truth directly to the soul.
