Testing Kṛṣṇa - Establishing the Supreme Potency
Throughout the Vedic literatures, there are numerous accounts of great personalities attempting to test Kṛṣṇa's identity and power. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that these incidents are not meant to suggest that God is subject to human scrutiny, but rather to establish a definitive standard for divinity, ensuring that the Supreme Lord is never confused with ordinary living entities.
The Bewilderment of Lord Brahmā
One of the most famous instances of testing Kṛṣṇa occurred when Lord Brahmā, the creator of the universe, became suspicious of Kṛṣṇa's human-like pastimes in Vṛndāvana. By stealing the Lord's calves and friends, Brahmā sought to verify if a simple cowherd boy could truly be the Supreme Lord, only to be overwhelmed by Kṛṣṇa's infinite expansions.
- Brahma, to test Krsna's Lordship, stole all the Lord's calves and cowherd boys with his own mystic power. Sri Krsna responded, however, by replacing all the calves and boys in the field.
- Lord Brahma had stolen all the calves and cowherd boys in order to test Krsna’s power. Lord Brahma admitted that his own extraordinary powers within the universe were not in the least comparable to the unlimited powers of Lord Krsna.
- When Brahma took away Krsna's associates to test the supremacy of Lord Krsna, the Lord expanded Himself again in the forms of the many cowherd boys and calves, all of whom, as Brahma saw, were visnu-murtis.
- Brahma understood that "It was my fault that I wanted to test my Lord." Then he came and surrendered, and there is a very nice stotra of Brahma.
Arjuna and the Standard for Godhead
Arjuna's request to see the universal form in the Bhagavad-gītā was a deliberate act to establish a criterion for future generations. By testing Kṛṣṇa in this way, Arjuna ensured that no one could falsely claim to be God without possessing the same absolute and all-encompassing potency shown by the Lord.
- In the Eleventh Chapter Arjuna requested Krsna that "If you think, You can show me Your universal form," so that in future others will accept some bogus rascal as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, he may test by seeing.
- Krsna taught Arjuna in the Bhagavad-gita, and Arjuna also accepted Him as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, but for our understanding Arjuna requested the Lord to manifest His universal form, thus testing whether He was actually the Supreme Lord.
- If I say, "Here is God," now it is up to you to test my statement. If you know what God is, then test my statement about Krsna, and then you'll accept Him as God.
Pastimes of Prowess and Protection
Even in the context of social dealings and family life, Kṛṣṇa's supremacy was often tested. Whether it was the elderly gopīs checking the health of their child or a King setting a challenge for a suitor, the Lord always proved His extraordinary nature and divine position through His transcendental activities.
- King Nagnajit continued, "I have imposed this test just to understand the prowess and position of my intended son-in-law. You, Krsna, are the chief of all heroes. I am sure You will be able to bring these seven bulls under control without any difficulty.
- When a baby drinks milk from the breast of his mother, this is a good sign of health. So the elderly gopis were not satisfied with chanting mantras to give protection to Krsna; they also tested whether their child's health was in order.
- Brahma and Indra, they are not fools. When they saw that "A boy is in Vrndavana, and He is accepted as the Supreme Lord, and He is doing something like God. Let us test."
Conclusion
Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that the Absolute Truth is not afraid of scrutiny. By examining the historical tests performed by great devotees and demigods, we can understand that Kṛṣṇa is the unique and original source of all energy. These accounts serve to strengthen our faith and provide the knowledge necessary to distinguish the genuine Supreme Personality of Godhead from any material imitation.
