Surrender Without Reservation
Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that the ultimate success in spiritual life depends entirely on the degree of one's surrender to the Supreme Personality of Godhead. To approach Kṛṣṇa, the spiritual master, or the community of pure devotees, one must abandon all false prestige, hidden motives, and personal agendas. When a soul surrenders without reservation, offering everything for the service of the Lord, Kṛṣṇa reciprocates by bestowing His causeless mercy without limit.
The Meaning of Praṇipāta
The Vedic scriptures declare that to receive transcendental knowledge, one must first surrender (praṇipāta). Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that this word literally means to fall down completely, holding absolutely nothing back, thus defining the essence of unreserved devotion to Kṛṣṇa.
- The word nipat means "to fall down," and pra means "without reservation." Transcendental knowledge is based on pranipata. Therefore Krsna says: sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja. - Just surrender unto Me.
- Pranipata means prakrsta-rupena nipatam, no reservation.
- One should take to devotional service without reservations and surrender everything to the supreme will of the Lord. That will make one happy in this life and the next.
- Surrender means full renunciation, no reservation. And renunciation means you renounce something and keep something. That is difference.
The Qualification of the Akiñcana
A pure devotee is characterized by their complete selflessness. Śrīla Prabhupāda uses the word akiñcana to describe a soul who has no material possessions or desires held in reserve for personal enjoyment, dedicating their entire existence to the satisfaction of the Lord.
- A devotee of Krsna surrenders unto Krsna without reservation, and therefore he is called akincana. The word kincana refers to something one reserves for oneself, and akincana means that one does not keep anything for oneself.
- Their qualities are one and the same, but those who are fully surrendered to Krsna's lotus feet are qualified with another transcendental quality - atma-samarpana, full surrender without reservation.
- The pure devotees have nothing to derive as personal profit from their unalloyed service to the Lord. They render incessant service to the Lord spontaneously, without any reservation.
- One may ask, "What is a sadhu?" A sadhu is one who serves Krsna and engages in Krsna consciousness without reservation.
The Reciprocation of the Lord
Kṛṣṇa is universally kind, but He reserves His most intimate shelter for those who surrender completely. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that when a devotee approaches the Lord without any vanity or mental reservation, the Lord eagerly washes away all their sinful reactions and protects them eternally.
- When a person takes shelter of the lotus feet of the Supreme Personality of Godhead without reservation, the unlimited, merciful Lord bestows His causeless mercy upon him. Thus he can pass over the insurmountable ocean of nescience.
- It is assured in the Bhagavad-gita that the Lord saves a pure devotee who has surrendered unto Him without reservation from all sorts of reactions of sins, and there is no doubt about this.
- In the Ramayana, Lanka-kanda the Lord says: It is My promise and duty to give all protection to one who surrenders unto Me without reservation.
- When a devotee praises the glories of the Lord, the Lord is very satisfied, and He bestows His transcendental benediction upon the devotee without reservation because He is always causelessly merciful toward His devotee.
The Etiquette of Devotional Service
Spiritual advancement is not an independent endeavor; it requires the association and guidance of advanced Vaiṣṇavas. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that a neophyte must mix with the devotees with an open mind, offering physical and mental service to the spiritual master without holding anything back.
- In that association, the neophyte devotees must render loving service physically and mentally without reservation.
- This service attitude will induce the great souls to be more favorable in bestowing their mercy, which injects the neophyte with all the transcendental qualities of the pure devotees.
- The regulated principles will be easier for one who has served the spiritual master without reservation.
- One defect in Hari Goswami is that although he wants to cooperate he wants to keep himself a little aloof as a goswami. I wish that he should mix with us with open mind, without reservation.
Conclusion
To cross the insurmountable ocean of material existence, partial surrender is insufficient. Śrīla Prabhupāda makes it clear that the ultimate standard of spiritual life is to become an akiñcana—a pure devotee who reserves nothing for their own sense gratification. Whether approaching the instructions of the Bhagavad-gītā, serving the spiritual master, or associating with fellow Vaiṣṇavas, the devotee must act with an open heart, completely free from false prestige and hidden motives. By offering one's body, mind, and words to the Lord without reservation, the sincere soul invokes the causeless, unreserved mercy of Kṛṣṇa, ensuring complete protection and the ultimate attainment of eternal, blissful life.
