Speaking on Behalf of Krsna - That Is Guru
In the modern world, there is great confusion regarding the true identity and role of a spiritual master. Many people are easily cheated by imposters offering manufactured philosophies. However, Śrīla Prabhupāda clearly explains that the position of a guru is highly specific and scientific; a genuine spiritual master never invents teachings but simply acts as a faithful representative of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, repeating Lord Kṛṣṇa's exact words as received through the disciplic succession.
The Absolute Qualification
To properly guide a disciple, a spiritual master must have factual realization of the highest knowledge. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that a true guru has perfectly heard the Vedic science from the right source (śrotriyam) and has practically seen the Absolute Truth (tattva-darśinaḥ), becoming firmly fixed in devotion.
- Guru's qualification is that he's srotriyam: he has heard from his guru perfectly. That is guru. Srotriyam. And brahma-nistham: and firmly fixed up at the lotus feet of Krsna. These are two qualifications.
- Guru means one who has seen the Absolute Truth. That is guru. Tattva-darsinah. Tattva means the Absolute Truth, and darsinah, one who has seen.
- Tattvam, the truth, so one must have seen the truth, realized the truth. Tad-vijnanartham sa gurum evabhigacchet. That is guru, means one who has seen the truth. How he has seen the truth? Through the parampara system.
- Guru means who knows the thing, who can teach you. That is guru - not a humbug guru, but guru means one who knows. Tattva-darsinah, one who has seen the truth, he can become guru.
Repeating Kṛṣṇa's Words
The hallmark of an authentic spiritual master is a complete lack of speculative invention. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that a guru does not manufacture novel ideas or dogmas; rather, the guru acts simply as Kṛṣṇa's representative, flawlessly repeating the message of the śāstras.
- Evam parampara-praptam. Guru is he who knows Krsna, who explains Krsna. That is guru. Otherwise he's not guru.
- Guru cannot become by manufacturing nonsense ideas. He's not guru. He's a rascal. Whatever guru will speak must be evidenced by the sastra. That is guru.
- One who speaks on behalf of Krsna, he is guru. That is guru. This is the test: whether he is aware of Krsna. Then he is guru. Otherwise he's not guru.
- We are not manufacturing. I do not say that "I am guru." Our business is to present what Krsna has said. That's all. Therefore I'm guru. Guru is he who speaks Krsna's words. That is guru. And if he manufactures, then he is a cheater.
The Faithful Servant, Not God
A dangerous trend in modern society is the emergence of false spiritual leaders who claim to be God. Śrīla Prabhupāda rigorously condemns this cheating propensity, pointing out that a bona fide guru always maintains their identity as the humble, faithful servant of the Supreme Lord.
- Guru means the faithful servant of God. That is guru.
- Guru means the faithful servant of God. That is guru. So you have to first of all test that "Are you faithful servant of God?" If he says, "No, I am God," oh, kick him on his face immediately. That "You are rascal. You have come to cheat us."
- Guru means who knows God and fully engaged in His service. That is guru.
- Why guru should be worshiped? Saksad-dharitvena samasta - because he has no cheating propensity. That is guru.
The Agent of Deliverance
Because the genuine spiritual master delivers unadulterated knowledge without personal motivation, they are the only reliable source for spiritual salvation. Śrīla Prabhupāda describes the guru as a merciful cloud capable of extinguishing the burning fire of material existence by providing the disciple with the ultimate gift: Lord Kṛṣṇa Himself.
- Guru is worshiped because he is delivering the right thing - no nonsense. That is guru.
- Guru means one who can give you Krsna. That is guru.
- This is guru. Guru means he'll always enlighten the disciple with the light of sastra.
- Guru is the cloud. That is... Samsara-davanala-lidha-loka-tranaya karunya-ghana.... Ghanaghanatvam means cloud, dense cloud. As soon as there is dense cloud and pours water, finished, all blazing fire finished. That is guru.
Conclusion
To escape the miseries of the material world, one must receive perfect knowledge, which can only be acquired from a perfect source. Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that recognizing a true spiritual master is very simple: a bona fide guru never manufactures his own philosophy, nor does he foolishly claim to be God. Rather, a genuine guru is the faithful servant of Lord Kṛṣṇa, strictly repeating the exact message received through the paramparā system. By deeply understanding the śāstras and remaining firmly fixed at the lotus feet of the Lord, the guru delivers pure Kṛṣṇa consciousness to humanity. When a sincere seeker finds such an unalloyed representative of God, they must accept their teachings without argument, for it is through this pure channel that the blazing fire of material existence is permanently extinguished.
