Severing the Material Connection - The Path to True Freedom
The fundamental disease of the conditioned soul is the false attachment to the temporary physical body and its extensions. As Śrīla Prabhupāda extensively explains, our ultimate goal in the human form of life is to consciously and deliberately sever this material connection, not through artificial, sentimental renunciation, but by perfectly linking our consciousness to the eternal service of the Supreme Lord.
The Root of Material Anxiety
The Supreme Lord, in His feature as Paramātmā, resides within the material world but is never tainted by it. The individual soul, however, suffers constant anxiety and instability due to its deep-rooted material connection. Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights that the entire aim of human activity should be focused on dismantling this false bodily identification, for only then can we experience genuine happiness and freedom.
- Because the Paramatma has no material connections, He is described here (SB 5.19.4) as anama-rupam niraham. The Paramatma has no material identity, whereas the jivatma does.
- A more settled conditioned soul quivers less, but due to material connection the quivering quality is more or less present everywhere.
- The whole human activities should be concentrated to get rid of this bodily, material bodily connection. Then I shall be happy really. Real happiness, real freedom.
Practical Detachment vs. Sentimentality
True renunciation is a matter of consciousness, not merely geography. We learn from the historical pastimes of Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu and Raghunātha dāsa Gosvāmī that prematurely running away from worldly duties out of sentimentality is useless. Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches us that we can break the dream of material existence at any moment, even while living in the world, simply by fixing our vision firmly on the spiritual reality and engaging in practical devotional service.
- Raghunatha dasa asked permission from the Lord to leave his material connections and accompany Him. The Lord refused to accept this proposal and instructed Raghunatha dasa that it is useless to leave worldly connections out of sentimentality.
- Here (SB 2.2.21) akuntha-drstih is mentioned. Akuntha and vaikuntha convey the same import only one who has his aim fixed upon that spiritual world & personal association with God can give up his material connections even while living in the material world.
- We break the dream when it becomes intolerable. Similarly, we can break this material connection at any moment as soon as we come to the point of Krsna conscious.
- One who is not trained or is unable to turn everything to the service of the Lord (nirbandhah krsna-sambandhe) must give up all material connections before he can be fit to hear and chant the glories of the Lord.
The Goal of Complete Self-Satisfaction
When a devotee thoroughly extinguishes the fire of material desires, they achieve a state of profound inner peace known as ātma-prasāda, or complete self-satisfaction. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that this is the hallmark of a first-class devotee. However, he also mercifully notes that if a sincere practitioner accidentally falls down, it is merely due to the lingering, formidable power of past material connections, and they should not be harshly misjudged.
- This state of affairs is described herein (SB 2.3.12) as pratinivrtta-gunormi, and it is possible by atma-prasada, or complete self-satisfaction without any material connection.
- The first-class devotee of the Lord attains this stage (complete self-satisfaction without any material connection) by devotional service.
- One should not misunderstand that a devotee in transcendental devotional service can act in all kinds of abominable ways; this verse (BG 9.30) only refers to an accident due to the strong power of material connections.
Returning Home, Back to Godhead
The ultimate fruit of severing our material connection is absolute liberation from the cycle of birth and death. As Śrīla Prabhupāda joyfully confirms, when a soul achieves complete detachment through loving service, their very body becomes spiritualized. Freed from all mundane entanglements, the devotee is perfectly positioned to have their service directly accepted by Kṛṣṇa in the eternal spiritual kingdom.
- The process of giving up all material connections and returning home, back to Godhead, the Supreme, is recommended herein. The condition is that one should be completely freed from desire for material enjoyment.
- Those who are directly engaged in the devotional service of the Lord not only acquire the necessary knowledge in spiritual science, but also attain detachment from material connection and are thus promoted to the kingdom of God by complete liberation.
- When one is freed from material connections in this way, his body immediately becomes spiritual, and Krsna accepts his service.
Conclusion
Śrīla Prabhupāda’s teachings present a clear and urgent mandate: to achieve true freedom, we must definitively sever our material connection to the bodily concept of life. This process does not demand artificial renunciation, but rather a profound shift in consciousness, moving from material exploitation to dedicated spiritual service. By steadily cultivating Kṛṣṇa consciousness and fixing our vision on the spiritual reality, we break the painful dream of material existence, attain supreme self-satisfaction, and secure our eternal return back home, back to Godhead.
