Satisfying the Supreme Yajña-puruṣa
Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that the ultimate goal of all prescribed duties and sacrifices is to satisfy the Supreme Lord. By studying his instructions, we learn how identifying and serving the Yajña-puruṣa frees the living entity from material entanglement and perfectly fulfills all spiritual and material obligations, especially through the chanting of the holy names.
The Identity of the Yajña-puruṣa
The Vedic literatures unanimously declare who the true beneficiary of all offerings is. Śrīla Prabhupāda identifies the Yajña-puruṣa as Lord Viṣṇu, Lord Kṛṣṇa, or any expansion of viṣṇu-tattva, confirming that He is the ultimate purpose and enjoyer of all sacrifices.
- He (Krsna) is the enjoyer of all sacrifices; He is known as yajna-purusa. The word yajna-purusa indicates Lord Visnu or Lord Krsna, or any Personality of Godhead in the category of visnu-tattva.
- As stated herein (in SB 4.14.18), bhagavan yajna-purusah - the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Krsna, is the yajna-purusa. As stated in Bhagavad-gita (BG 5.29): bhoktaram yajna-tapasam. Krsna is the ultimate purpose of all sacrifice.
- Yajna means Lord Visnu, the yajna-purusa, the enjoyer of all sacrifices (bhoktaram yajna-tapasam sarva-loka-mahesvaram) - BG 5.29.
- The Visnu Purana (3.8.9) says: All the Vedic ritualistic sacrifices are performed for the purpose of satisfying Lord Visnu, the yajna-purusa - CC Madhya 8.58 quoted in SB 8.23.15.
Nourishing the Demigods
People often worship various demigods for material benedictions. However, Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the demigods are simply limbs of the Supreme Lord's universal body; therefore, by directing our offerings to the Yajña-puruṣa, Nārāyaṇa, all the demigods are automatically satisfied.
- A yajna may be carried out to satisfy a particular demigod, but when the yajna is offered to the yajna-purusa, Narayana, the demigods are satisfied.
- The Supreme Lord, who is known as the yajna-purusah, or the personal beneficiary of all sacrifices, is the master of all demigods who serve Him as the different limbs of the body serve the whole.
- Complete arrangements for the production of all the necessities of life are made by the Supreme Personality of Godhead. People should therefore learn how to satisfy the yajna-purusa, Lord Visnu.
Escaping Material Bondage
Any action performed for personal sense gratification entangles the soul in the cycle of karma. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that working exclusively for the satisfaction of the Yajña-puruṣa liberates the performer from all material reactions and cosmic complications.
- If one performs activities for the satisfaction of the Supreme Personality, the yajna-purusa, his work does not produce reactions, whereas karmis, who act for themselves, are bound by the reactions of their work.
- The more you become independent, you become more and more entangled. Yajnarthe karma . . . karmani, anyatra karma-bandhanah. If you don't act for Yajna, Yajna-purusa, Krsna, then you'll be entangled.
- If you dedicate your life for yajna . . . yajna means for Visnu. Yajnarthe karma means . . . yajna-purusa is Visnu. If you work for Visnu, then you are safe. Otherwise you are becoming complicated.
The Supreme Sacrifice for Kali-yuga
In the current age, elaborate ritualistic sacrifices are highly impractical. Śrīla Prabhupāda instructs that those who have good intelligence will satisfy the Yajña-puruṣa, manifesting directly as Lord Caitanya, by performing the sublime saṅkīrtana-yajña.
- It is recommended in Srimad-Bhagavatam (yajnaih sankirtana-prayaih) that by performing sankirtana-yajna and by satisfying the yajna-purusa, Lord Caitanya, one can derive all the results derived by great sacrifices in the past.
- By satisfying the yajna-purusa, Lord Caitanya, one can derive all the results derived by great sacrifices in the past. King Prthu and others derived all the necessities of life from the earthly planet by performing great sacrifices.
- It is recommended that in this age specifically, yajnaih sankirtana-prayair yajanti hi sumedhasah: (SB 11.5.32) those who have good intelligence satisfy the yajna-purusa, Visnu, by chanting the Hare Krsna mantra.
- If you perform the sankirtana-yajna, then it is as good any other yajna. Yajna means to satisfy the yajna-purusa, Visnu, Lord Visnu.
Conclusion
Śrīla Prabhupāda makes it abundantly clear that the central focus of human life must be the satisfaction of the Yajña-puruṣa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Because Lord Kṛṣṇa or Lord Viṣṇu is the root of all existence, offering everything to Him naturally nourishes the demigods and frees the living entity from the strict laws of karma. In this degraded age of Kali, the most perfect and sublime method to please the Yajña-puruṣa is not through complex and impossible Vedic rituals, but by joining Lord Caitanya's saṅkīrtana movement. By congregationally chanting the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra, any sincere soul can safely bypass material entanglement and achieve the ultimate perfection of all sacrifices.
