Recognizing a Tattva-vit Who Knows the Supreme Personality
To advance properly in spiritual life, one must understand the ultimate goal of Vedic knowledge and the exalted position of those who possess it. In his extensive teachings, Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that a tattva-vit is one who perfectly knows the Absolute Truth in its complete spiritual reality. By comprehending the three features of the Supreme and realizing one's eternal relationship with Kṛṣṇa, a sincere seeker transcends material illusion and becomes firmly situated in divine knowledge.
The Definition of a Tattva-vit
To correctly approach spiritual science, one must first understand what the term tattva-vit actually means. It is translated by Śrīla Prabhupāda as "one who knows the truth," pointing to a person who has fully realized the Absolute Truth without any tinge of duality. Such an elevated soul comprehends the distinction between matter and spirit and is no longer bewildered by temporary worldly designations.
- Tattva means truth and vit means one who knows. So a person who knows all these things he's called tattva-vit.
- The transcendentalists call the Absolute Truth that in which there is no duality. In the Absolute Truth there is no duality - everything is on the same level. One who knows this in truth is called tattvavit.
- Vadanti tat tattva-vidas tattvam yaj jnanam advayam (SB 1.2.11). Tattva-vit. Tattva-vit means one who has realized the Supreme Truth. He is called tattva-vit. Tattva means Supreme Truth, and vit means one who knows.
- It is recommended in this verse (SB 3.20.4) that one find a person who knows the science of God, or a tattva-vit. Tattva-vit means "one who knows the Absolute Truth."
The Three Features of the Absolute
The Absolute Truth is not a vague concept but is experienced in three distinct progressive phases according to the realization of the spiritualist. By studying the Vedic literature, a tattva-vit recognizes this truth as the impersonal Brahman, the localized Paramātmā, and the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Bhagavān. Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that while all three classes of seekers are transcendental, only those who realize the personal feature truly understand the ultimate spiritual conclusion.
- The tattvavit says that the Supreme Absolute Truth is recognized in three aspects: impersonal Brahman, and Paramatma, the localized Supersoul, and Bhagavan. Bhagavan means the Personality of Godhead. So they are three angles of vision.
- According to Srimad-Bhagavatam, one who knows the Absolute Truth in three different features - namely Brahman, Paramatma, and the Supreme Personality of Godhead - is called tattvavit, for he knows also his own factual position in relationship with the Supreme.
- Either the seeker of the Brahman, either the seeker of the supreme soul, Supersoul, or the seeker of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, they are all transcendentalists. They are not in the material world. They are tattva-vit.
- There are certain tattva-vit, or the knower of the Absolute Truth, who understands that Absolute Truth as impersonal Brahman.
Detachment from Material Opulence
Because a knower of the truth is firmly anchored in the eternal reality, they naturally lose all attraction for the temporary manifestations of this material world. It is heavily stressed by Śrīla Prabhupāda that an ātma-tattva-vit understands the supreme value of the soul and therefore cannot be captivated by fleeting external opulences. Their satisfaction is derived entirely from their internal spiritual connection, rendering mundane achievements utterly insignificant.
- Those who are not atma-tattva-vit, who do not know the spiritual value of life, can be satisfied with external material opulences, but those who are atma-tattva-vit are not inspired by material opulence.
- Brahmeti paramatmeti. Some of them are brahma-parayana; some of them paramatma-parayana; some of them are bhakta. It doesn't matter. But they're all spiritual. They have no interest in this material world. Tattva-vit. They know what is truth.
- This (who do not know the spiritual value of life, can be satisfied with external material opulences, but those who are atma-tattva-vit are not inspired by material opulence) is the instruction we can derive from the life and activities of Saubhari Muni.
The Ultimate Kṛṣṇa Tattva-vit
The highest platform of realizing the truth is achieved when one fully understands the science of the Supreme Lord and acts strictly according to His divine will. A true Kṛṣṇa-tattva-vit, regardless of their external social order or occupation, acknowledges their complete dependence on the Lord's sanction. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that such a pure devotee acts only to serve the Supreme Personality of Godhead, perfectly exemplifying the ultimate goal of all Vedic knowledge.
- One may be a grhastha or sannyasi - it doesn't matter - but he must be Krsna-tattva-vit. He must know the science of Krsna. That is required.
- Tattva-vit means one who knows the truth, that "I cannot do anything without Krsna's sanction." Therefore he does not do anything. Whatever is sanctioned by Krsna he does; otherwise not.
- I love the soul. This is the fact. This is atmavit, atma-tattva-vit. And why I love soul? Because I love Krsna. Soul is part and parcel of Krsna. So why I am so much fond of soul? Because it is part and parcel of Krsna.
- You cannot understand what is Absolute Truth who is not tattva-vit. Tattva-vit means one who knows the Supreme Personality, he is actually vedais ca sarvair aham eva vedyo.
Conclusion
A person who deeply understands the science of the soul and the absolute nature of the Supreme Lord is celebrated as a true tattva-vit. As clearly presented by Śrīla Prabhupāda, this realization elevates the soul far beyond mundane opulences and sectarian divisions. By ultimately recognizing Lord Kṛṣṇa as the source of everything, the knower of truth engages in pure, unalloyed devotional service, fulfilling the highest purpose of human existence.
