Real Service Means Awakening Kṛṣṇa Consciousness
The inherent nature of every living being is to render service, but directing that service toward temporary material objectives inevitably leads to frustration. To rectify this misdirection, Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches us that we must identify our true master and engage our purified senses for His satisfaction. Genuine humanitarianism is not about adjusting the temporary body, but about reviving the eternal soul's relationship with the Supreme.
The Futility of Artificial Service
Despite immense efforts in philanthropy and societal duty, the world remains in a state of distress. It is observed by Śrīla Prabhupāda that this unhappiness stems from the artificial nature of material service. Until we recognize that everything belongs to Kṛṣṇa and offer our actions to Him, we will never find actual peace.
- Everyone is unhappy although they are rendering service and taking service. This is going on, but nobody is happy because this is artificial. Real service... Unless the thing comes to the real point, there is no peace.
- Bhakta, devotees, they know that everything belongs to Krsna; now it should be offered to Krsna. That is real service.
- We should serve Krsna without any cause, not that by serving Krsna I shall improve my material position and so many causes maybe. But real service, real devotional service must be without cause. That is pure devotional service.
- What is my own constitutional position? I am eternal servant of God, Krsna. This is my position. So when we give up all these designation service and engage myself in the real service of the real master, that is called mukti, liberation.
Purifying the Senses for Devotion
Serving the Supreme Lord is not a matter of suppressing our natural activities, but of cleansing our consciousness. In his precise instructions, Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that the false ego must be dissolved. Once the senses are purified from material motives, one can derive pure transcendental pleasure from serving Govinda.
- Real service of the Lord begins when the senses are purified. One does not have to stop the activities of the senses, but the false ego of identifying with the body has to be removed.
- He is Govinda because He is the pleasure of the cows and the senses. Those who have purified their senses by the devotional service of the Lord can render unto Him real service and thereby derive transcendental pleasure out of such purified senses.
- Those who have purified their senses by the devotional service of the Lord can render unto Him real service and thereby derive transcendental pleasure out of such purified senses.
- The real service, or service in svarupa, is present in the transcendental world, in association with the Lord. The very same service in transcendental love can be practiced in devotion here.
Serving Humanity Through Kṛṣṇa Consciousness
The highest charity one can perform is to rescue others from the illusion of bodily identification. Throughout his life's mission, Śrīla Prabhupāda demonstrated that distributing spiritual literature and teaching pure surrender to the Supreme Lord is the ultimate welfare work. Saving the soul, rather than just maintaining the body, is the true meaning of compassion.
- Our service to the humanity should be aimed how to awaken his original consciousness, Krsna consciousness. That is real service.
- Real service is this: Krsna consciousness, to arouse the dormant Krsna consciousness in every living entity. Nitya-siddha krsna-bhakti. To make him aroused in relationship with Krsna, that is real service.
- Real service to humanity is rendered when one teaches surrender to and worship of the Supreme Lord with full love and energy. That is the instruction of Sri Isopanisad in this mantra.
- Try to save the soul who is put into this body and embarrassed. That is real service. This is Krsna consciousness movement.
The Order of the Spiritual Master
Spiritual advancement is intrinsically linked to obedience and faith in the bona fide spiritual master. It is firmly stated by Śrīla Prabhupāda that executing the order of the guru without hesitation is the practical application of devotion. Following this instruction brings one directly in touch with the Supreme Lord.
- The order of the father or the order of the spiritual master must be carried out without hesitation, with an immediate yes. There should be no argument. That is real service to the father and to the spiritual master.
- I think if you want to do some real service to Krishna, and to the society, you should now fix up your mind to follow my instructions and do some tangible work.
- It is certainly not good to write literature for money or reputation, but to write books and publish them for the enlightenment of the general populace is real service to the Lord. That was Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati’s opinion.
- Arjuna accepts Sri Krsna as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and any commentary on the Gita following in the footsteps of Arjuna is real devotional service to the cause of this great science. BG 1972 purports.
Conclusion
True service must transcend the temporary platforms of the material body and mind to touch the eternal spirit soul. Through his perfect example and teachings, Śrīla Prabhupāda has shown us that reviving our dormant love for God is the only way to achieve lasting peace. By purifying our senses and dedicating our lives to the instructions of the spiritual master, we perform the highest service to ourselves, to humanity, and to the Supreme Lord.
