Preaching is the Real Work
Society places immense value on hard work and productivity, but rarely questions the ultimate destination of all this labor. When evaluating our activities through the lens of eternity, Śrīla Prabhupāda makes it clear that endeavors aimed solely at bodily maintenance are essentially a waste of time. The actual business of a human being is to act for the pleasure of the Supreme Lord and help others awaken to this reality.
Moving Beyond Senseless Endeavors
Without the guidance of spiritual knowledge, people engage in exhausting labor that only perpetuates their suffering in the material world. It is frequently noted by Śrīla Prabhupāda that true intelligence involves researching how to escape the cycle of birth, death, old age, and disease. Performing our duties without attachment, focusing instead on self-realization, is the beginning of genuine action.
- Karyam karma samacara: Do your duty as duty, as you are duty bound. But don't be attached to that work. Because you should always know that your real work is self-realization.
- One should know that he is suffering in birth, suffering in death, suffering in old age and suffering in disease, and one should be inquisitive as to how he may avoid the suffering. That is real research work.
- People in general are all engaged in senseless work. They are systematically unmindful of the real beneficial work, which is the devotional service of the Lord, technically called the arcana regulations.
- Sacrifice does not mean murdering. The real work is yajna. Yajna means Visnu. In the Bhagavad-gita, yajna is prescribed.
Working for Kṛṣṇa
Spiritual life does not demand the cessation of activity; rather, it requires the transformation of consciousness. Through the example of Arjuna on the battlefield, Śrīla Prabhupāda demonstrates that fighting or working under the direction of Kṛṣṇa is transcendental. When our actions are sanctioned by the Supreme, they produce no binding material reactions.
- Arjuna was Krsna's friend, but He never said that "You stop your working." Rather, He engaged him in his real work. He was a fighter.
- Real worker is Krsna. We are simply instrument.
- So anything - it does not matter what it is - when it is sanctioned by Krsna, it has no reaction. That is the real work.
- Such activities (to induce the conditioned souls to become Krsna conscious) constitute real welfare work. By such activities, a preacher or anyone who endeavors to spread Krsna consciousness is recognized by the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
The Mission of Preaching
The highest expression of compassion is to dedicate one's life to rescuing others from material illusion. In his letters and instructions, Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that regardless of one's social status, the primary business of a devotee is to preach. Organizing society to deliver souls back to Godhead is the most vital assignment we can undertake.
- I (Prabhupada) am so much pleased that you are doing the real work of a sannyasi, travelling, preaching and training the devotees to preach.
- Our main business is preaching. Either do it as a grhastha or as sannyasi, it does not matter. This is only formality. The real work is preaching.
- So you organize everything in such a way that we can deliver these souls back to Krishna - this is our real work.
- That is our real work, to educate people in spiritual life by giving them the practical example, so I wanted that the GBC would be a chosen body of men for that purpose, to see how the students are learning and reporting to me as my secretaries.
Dedication to the Assigned Duty
To execute a worldwide spiritual movement effectively, devotees must remain focused and cooperative. It was the constant desire of Śrīla Prabhupāda to be freed from managerial distractions so he could concentrate on his primary work of translating the Vedic literatures. By sticking strictly to our assigned services, such as book distribution or deity worship, we achieve personal success.
- How things should be done I have given you suggestion, but it is not possible for me to divert my attention. Then my real work will suffer.
- Please go on all working together in cooperative spirit and do the needful; then I may be spared taxing my brain over so many matters and I can go on my real work of translating.
- So go on printing and distributing as many books as possible; this is your real work and your personal success.
- There is no necessity either for you to go out on Sankirtana if this will take away your time from your real work.
Conclusion
Dedicating our energy to temporary material achievements ultimately leaves the soul impoverished. By strictly following the instructions of Śrīla Prabhupāda, we redirect our efforts toward the eternal mission of Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Whether through preaching, distributing books, or executing our assigned duties, this spiritual endeavor is the only real work that guarantees our return back to Godhead.
