Prabhupāda Warns His Disciples That Complaints Disturb His Translation Work
The rapid global expansion of the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement inevitably brought complex administrative and interpersonal challenges. To manage this massive society, Śrīla Prabhupāda established a governing body specifically to relieve himself of bureaucratic headaches so he could focus entirely on translating transcendental literature. However, when leaders and disciples continuously forwarded their grievances and disputes to his desk, it created an intolerable disruption to his profound spiritual work. He rigorously trains his followers to stop acting like mundane politicians, urging them to resolve conflicts cooperatively, establish their own internal purity, and shield him from the endless barrage of unnecessary complaints.
The Disturbance to Translation Work
The primary mission of the founder-ācārya is to provide the world with the absolute knowledge found in the Vedic scriptures. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that receiving constant reports of disturbances and interpersonal friction severely agitates his mind, directly halting his ability to translate. He pleads with his followers to spare him from this taxation by cooperating peacefully and managing their centers effectively.
- Whenever I hear complaints or disturbances in our centers my mind becomes too much disturbed and I cannot properly translate my books.
- Whenever I hear complaints or disturbances in our centers my mind becomes too much disturbed and I cannot properly translate my books. So please spare me from such disturbance by cooperating all together Godbrothers and Godsisters.
- I set up the GBC with hope that I shall get relief from administration of the mission but on the contrary I have become the center of receiving so many complaints. So it is not a relief for me, rather it is becoming a little troublesome.
- So far your becoming GBC is concerned, yes, I had wanted that, but there are so many complaints. This is not good. GBC must mean that by his managing, there is not any complaints so that I can be relieved in order to do my translation work.
The Responsibility of the GBC
The Governing Body Commission was instituted to act as the ultimate managerial authority, resolving issues independently. Śrīla Prabhupāda expresses deep frustration when these very leaders fail to maintain vigilance and instead bring their counter-complaints to him. He reminds them that pointing out mismanagement after the fact, or flying thousands of miles simply to lodge a grievance, renders their leadership completely useless.
- I do not wish to give any decision without the GBC's verdict. My only grievance is that I appointed GBC to give me relief from the management but, on the contrary, complaints and counter-complaints are coming to me.
- I want to increase my work. Brahmananda Swami and Gopala Krishna were suggesting that I go to some other place in India, but if Tamala Krishna flies 10,000 miles to lodge some complaint against Jayatirtha what can I do?
- What is the wrong if Yasodanandana Swami prints the books on behalf of BBT for convenience. You are accusing him of so many bogus complaints. What is bogus? What is genuine? If all these complaints come to me it is too much taxation for me.
- Our movement is so large it requires expert management and strong vigilence. Now you (a GBC member) are finding out so many things were mismanaged, but why didn't you find out before? What is the use of complaining now?
Investigating Serious Allegations
While petty bickering is dismissed, legitimate reports of financial mismanagement, moral deviation, or abuse must be dealt with swiftly. Śrīla Prabhupāda acts decisively when senior men act improperly, establishing enquiry committees or completely stripping them of their managerial duties. He emphasizes that exploiting the service of innocent devotees for personal aggrandizement is a highly serious offense that damages the society's reputation.
- Complaints against Bali Mardan is very serious, and I have appointed an enquiry committee, consisting of three men. Let us know the report.
- When I was in Nairobi I took away from Cyavana all managerial duties. There were so many complaints against him from our men and from outsiders. He could not manage nor could he collect.
- If there is such complaint against our senior men it does not look well.
- The second is the complaint of abusing the devotees and exploiting their service for accumulating money and for aggrandizing himself and herself both.
Resolving Conflicts Cooperatively
To prevent the institution from fracturing under the weight of individualism, a systematic approach to conflict resolution is required. Śrīla Prabhupāda mandates that all major complaints between leaders must be tabled and discussed openly at the annual Māyāpur festival. By setting a personal example of dedication rather than criticizing others, and avoiding abrupt changes in temple leadership, devotees maintain a unified and solid front.
- So far the presidents are concerned, they should not be abruptly changed in future. If there is any complaint they should be first of all informed to me.
- Regarding complaints by the sannyasis, these things shall be discussed in everyone's presence at the Mayapur meeting. There is no question of change but sometimes change is invigorating.
- We shall sit together in Mayapur if there is any complaint against one another. At the Mayapur meeting, whatever we have decided that is good for one year.
- Our ISKCON Society married couples means that both parties fully are engaged in Krishna's service. I have noted your several complaints against the devotees but it would be better to set the example rather than to criticize the defects of the devotees.
Marital and Personal Grievances
The renounced order of life strictly forbids entanglement in the trivial affairs of mundane relationships. Śrīla Prabhupāda expresses extreme disgust when his disciples attempt to use him as a marriage counselor to resolve their daily domestic squabbles. He instructs the gṛhasthas to tolerate the inherent difficulties of household life and draw inspiration from great preachers of the past, rather than citing those who have deserted the movement as excuses for their own failures.
- I am so much disgusted by this troublesome business of marriage, because nearly every day I receive some complaint from husband or wife, and practically this is not my business as sannyasi to be marriage counsellor.
- I have heard a serious complaint against you that you are in intimate relation with Aradhana's wife Santanu. I am not only surprised but I cannot believe that a nice boy like you should be thus accused.
- You have complained about those devotees who have mistreated their wives and children, but that is not the example. Those who have deserted this movement are not the example.
- You complain that as a householder it is very difficult. Especially you want to preach. There are examples of great preachers who were householders, such as Bhaktivinode thakur, although we cannot hope to imitate him.
Purity is the Ultimate Solution
All interpersonal strife and institutional friction ultimately stem from a lack of spiritual absorption. Śrīla Prabhupāda provides the absolute cure for all organizational headaches: if every devotee remains entirely pure and strictly chants their sixteen rounds without fail, all complaints will automatically vanish. By refusing to overendeavor for material things and dedicating every action purely to Kṛṣṇa, the devotees naturally resolve all conflicts from within.
- If there is any truth in the complaints, you should rectify and be purified.
- Regarding the complaints against yourself you have mentioned, I do not find any complaints. But even if there should be such complaints, you must remain pure, and automatically the complaints will vanish.
- There should be no complaint, under all circumstances we must chant regularly 16 rounds and attend the morning and evening classes, for Krishna we can work like anything, but one lick done for maya it is useless, overendeavoring.
- Recently I have received from one Sannyasi complaint about another Sannyasi who is not chanting regularly.
Conclusion
The profound patience of the spiritual master should never be exploited by involving him in petty managerial or personal disputes. Through these sharp and illuminating instructions, Śrīla Prabhupāda demands that his leaders step up, take genuine responsibility, and shield his translation work from unnecessary disturbances. By learning to cooperate, forgiving minor flaws, and strictly upholding their own spiritual vows, the disciples protect the integrity of the mission. Ultimately, it is this mature, pure, and unified approach that allows the movement to expand peacefully while ensuring the world receives the supreme gift of transcendental literature.
