Prabhupāda Trains His Disciples That Following the Ācāryas is the Only Authentic Path
The foundation of the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement rests entirely on strict adherence to the previous spiritual masters. Śrīla Prabhupāda instructs his disciples that spiritual perfection cannot be manufactured through mental speculation; it is achieved solely by following the footprints of great authorities. He warns against prematurely imitating the higher authorities, demanding instead that followers submissively accept their instructions and practice standard devotional service. By remaining cent percent faithful to the paramparā system and refusing to deviate from the prescribed rules, a disciple becomes fully purified. Ultimately, anyone who perfectly executes the orders of the predecessors becomes qualified to lead others and successfully pushes forward the universal Vedic mission.
The Principle of Disciplic Succession
Authentic spiritual knowledge is never invented; it descends purely through the unbroken paramparā system. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that even if there are historical gaps, the process is to pick up the prominent ācāryas—like Vivasvān, Manu, and Ikṣvāku—and follow them implicitly. By accepting the Bhagavad-gītā exactly as it is without speculative interpretation, devotees ensure their preaching remains perfectly aligned with the absolute truth.
- Krishna has mentioned only three names in this parampara system - namely, Vivasvan, Manu, and Iksvaku; and so these gaps do not hamper from understanding the parampara system. We have to pick up the prominent acaryas, and follow from him.
- We have taken Bhagavad-gita as it is, and following the instruction of Caitanya Mahaprabhu, we are preaching to our best capacity.
- Acarya upasanam. We receive the knowledge throughout the disciplic succession of acaryas, and we accept it and we follow it, and practically you see the result. That is our request.
- To make progress in devotional service, one cannot manufacture anything. The authoritative statements of acaryas, that we'll have to follow.
Following the Gosvāmīs
The specific identity of the society's members is that they are rūpānuga Vaiṣṇavas, meaning they strictly adhere to the path laid down by Rūpa Gosvāmī. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that anything contrary to this established plan is fundamentally rejected as false philosophy (apasiddhānta). Even if a disciple cannot fully comprehend complex aphorisms from the Vedānta-sūtra, simply following in these sacred footprints guarantees their elevation to the highest spiritual stage.
- Because we do not follow any other path, we follow mahajano yena gatah sa panthah (CC Madhya 17.186), we follow Jiva Gosvami, Rupa Gosvami. Therefore, we are called Rupanuga Vaisnava, Vaisnava who are followers strictly.
- We are called rupanuga, "strictly following the footstep of Rupa Gosvami." Rupanuga-varaya te. And our Guru Maharaja was . . . rupanuga-viruddhapasiddhanta-dhvanta-harine: Anything against the plan of Rupa Gosvami, not accepted.
- Vande rupa-sanatanau raghu-yugau, the six Gosvamis, six Gosvamis, and if we follow their footprints, rupanuga-varaya te, then he also becomes gosvami. This is the process. Therefore in any way you go, it is required, mahat-seva.
- We may not be very well versed in the Vedanta-sutra aphorisms and may not understand their meaning, but we follow in the footsteps of the acaryas.
Adherence Over Imitation
An advanced spiritual authority may perform actions that are entirely incomprehensible to a neophyte student. Therefore, Śrīla Prabhupāda strictly warns his followers to never artificially imitate the behavior of the ācārya, but to submissively follow their direct instructions instead. By maintaining this humble obedience to the prescribed rules, the disciple avoids the dangerous pitfall of spiritual pride and premature falldown.
- Even a Vaisnava acarya, what he is doing, even the most expert intelligent man cannot understand why he is doing this. Therefore we should not try to imitate the higher authorities, but we have to follow.
- Follow all the rules prescribed by the acaryas and the spiritual master. If we deviate from this process, we may fall down, even though we may be very highly advanced.
- If you perform the spiritual duties rightly, then you are saved. Otherwise, even acarya gives you instruction, if you don't follow, so how he can save you?
- Our this Vedic principle is to follow the acarya. And if we have taken shelter of a bona fide acarya, and if we are sincere to follow the instruction of acarya, then our life is successful. This is the process, acarya upasanam.
Executing Practical Vows
Following the great souls is not a mere theoretical concept; it requires executing highly practical daily duties. Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that anyone can emulate Haridāsa Ṭhākura simply by chanting sixteen rounds of the mahā-mantra and offering respect to the tulasī plant. He also assures his students that worldly responsibilities, such as marriage, are never an impediment as long as one continues to faithfully walk the path of the mahājana.
- We can follow Harida Thakur's example by chanting sixteen rounds of the Hare Krsna maha-mantra on beads every day and offering respect to the tulasi plant. This is not at all difficult for anyone.
- One has to follow the footprints of the great Acaryas then everything is all right. I was also a married man - my family is still existing. So you should always remember that marriage is not impediment.
- We must follow the path of mahajana, the instruction of the acarya. Then we can become purified. And unless we are purified, there is no question of pure devotional service.
- Our point is to always follow the example of the acaryas and this will bring us to the perfectional stages with no doubt.
Becoming Qualified to Lead
The natural progression of a sincere disciple is to eventually become a mature leader who carries the mission forward. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that becoming an ācārya is not a difficult or mystical feat, but simply the result of remaining a cent percent faithful servant to the predecessor. By remaining pure and resisting the urge to become falsely puffed up, the dedicated followers will ensure that the world always has access to authentic spiritual guidance.
- When we are completely, cent per cent follower of acarya, then you can also act as acarya. This is the process. Don't become premature acarya. First of all follow the orders of acarya, and you become mature.
- To become acarya is not very difficult. First of all, to become very faithful servant of your acarya, follow strictly what he says. Try to please him and spread Krsna consciousness. That's all. It is not at all difficult.
- There will be no scarcity of acarya, and people will understand Krsna consciousness very easily. So make that organization. Don't be falsely puffed up. Follow the acarya's instruction and try to make yourself perfect, mature.
- If we remain very sincere and pure in following the line laid down by the previous great acaryas, this Krishna Consciousness Movement will undoubtedly be accepted throughout the world as the only religion.
Conclusion
The spiritual path is perfectly safe and profoundly simple when one abandons mental speculation and accepts authorized guidance. Śrīla Prabhupāda guarantees that by strictly following the instructions of the previous ācāryas, any sincere soul can bypass the complexities of material philosophy and rapidly attain pure devotion. Because the process is thoroughly tested by great historical authorities like Rūpa Gosvāmī and Caitanya Mahāprabhu, his disciples never have to invent new methods to achieve success. By humbly adopting this obedient posture, the dedicated followers ensure that the pristine, unbroken chain of transcendental knowledge continues to illuminate the world for generations to come.
