Prabhupāda Teaches His Disciples the Perfection of Devotional Service to God
To free the conditioned souls from the miseries of material existence, Śrīla Prabhupāda introduced the practical science of bhakti-yoga. He taught his disciples that real religion is not merely an internal meditation or a weekly ceremony, but an active, continuous, and joyous life of rendering pure devotional service to the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
The 24-Hour Engagement
Spiritual life is the eternal reality of the soul, and therefore it cannot be limited to a few hours a day. Śrīla Prabhupāda instructed his disciples to mold their lives in such a way that they were constantly absorbed in Kṛṣṇa's service. By arranging the temple program and daily duties meticulously, he ensured that devotees remained engaged twenty-four hours a day, thus leaving no room for material illusion to enter.
- I want that in our temple there should be program that we are always engaged in devotional service, twenty-four hours.
- I want to see that all my disciples are engaged 24 hours in the service of the Lord.
- Superficially we engage from four o'clock in the morning till ten o'clock at night, and that is resting time. But when one is advanced in devotional service, while sleeping he also serves Krsna.
- Those who are 24-hours engaged in rendering loving devotional service to the Lord. To such person Krsna gives intelligence, not others.
- Those who are pure devotees do not aspire for any concession, and out of spontaneous love try to engage themselves in devotional service 24 hours each day, 365 days every year, without any stoppage.
Strict Adherence to the Rules
The foundation upon which all pure devotional service is built is discipline. To ensure his disciples could safely navigate the material world without falling down, Śrīla Prabhupāda mandated the strict observance of the four regulative principles and the daily chanting of the holy names. These routine practices are the essential prerequisites for maintaining one's spiritual strength.
- Always follow the four principles, take prasadam, and above all chant your sixteen rounds a day, and thus you will make steady advancement in devotional service.
- As my initiated disciple you must strictly observe the four restrictions; namely no taking of intoxicants; no eating of meat, fish, or eggs; no illicit sex life; and no gambling. Follow the prescribed regulations for devotional service.
- Please try and render devotional service very carefully following all of the rules and regulations mentioned in our books. Always chant at least 16 good rounds daily. If you try very sincerely to do these things Krishna will help you.
- Please try very hard to remain fixed-up in devotional service to Lord Krishna, always chanting Hare Krishna (at least 16 rounds), following the four rules, and reading my books frequently.
- Stay strong in Krishna's service by strictly following the regulative principles, chanting 16 rounds daily, without fail, reading all our literatures, and engaging whole-heartedly in devotional service, 24 hours.
The Purificatory Power of Service
Because the living entity has wandered through the material universe for millions of births, the heart is covered with thick layers of material contamination. However, Śrīla Prabhupāda taught that the process of bhakti is so powerful that simply by engaging in active service to the Lord, all sinful reactions and material desires are immediately burned to ashes, resulting in a completely purified existence.
- Even with your kama, desires, you execute devotional service, make connection with the Supreme Lord, a time will come, you'll become akamah, no more desires.
- It is not that all our students were free from this alcoholic habit or meat-eating or illicit sex, no. They were habituated. But because they have taken to the devotional service, this is all finished.
- The whole devotional process is purificatory process. The more he is purified, he becomes high-class devotee. But the process is the path of liberation. Just like mango. The green mango, this green mango will be ripe mango. The same mango.
- The more you are engaged in devotional service, the more your senses become pure or uncovered. And when it is completely uncovered, without any designation, then you are capable to serve Krsna. This is apprenticeship.
- These boys and girls whom you see, they are engaged in the service of the Lord. They are not ordinary boys. Their reaction of sinful life is finished. Therefore they are so steadily engaged, twenty-four hours.
Utilizing Everything for Kṛṣṇa
Renunciation does not mean abandoning the world and living in a cave. Śrīla Prabhupāda revolutionized the concept of detachment by training his disciples to use everything—including modern technology, artistic talents, and financial endeavors—solely for spreading Kṛṣṇa consciousness. When an object or action is directed toward the pleasure of the Supreme Lord, it becomes completely spiritualized.
- We can use everything - television, radio, movies, or whatever there may be - to tell about Krishna, and outside of devotional service all these modern paraphernalia are just so much rubbish.
- We can use everything - typewriters, automobiles, airplanes, missiles. If we simply speak to people about Krsna consciousness, we are also rendering service.
- Boys who are not engaged in the temple service during daytime must try to get some money by working or some other way. Without money it is not possible to exist in the material world.
- On the whole, we can endeavor for money making if it doesn't hamper our devotional service. And otherwise, we shall prefer to starve and chant Hare Krishna. That should be the pivot of all our activities.
Unmotivated and Uninterrupted Service
True love of God is not a business transaction. Śrīla Prabhupāda consistently warned his followers against executing their duties with the hope of acquiring material benefits or heavenly elevation. To achieve the highest perfection, devotional service must be rendered spontaneously, without any underlying cause or selfish motivation, and it must continue uninterrupted in all circumstances.
- It is the common understanding of Krsna Consciousness or the science of devotional service rendered to Krsna that we shall serve Him spontaneously and without any desire for compensation for our service.
- We should serve Krsna without any cause, not that by serving Krsna I shall improve my material position and so many causes maybe. But real service, real devotional service must be without cause. That is pure devotional service.
- We should always remember that. Don't bring any material desire in executing devotional service. Then it is not pure.
- If you engage yourself in pure devotional service incessantly, without any stop, then you always remain transcendental, above these three gunas. So our Krsna consciousness movement is to keep the devotee above the three gunas.
The Protection and Perfection of Service
By surrendering fully to the lotus feet of Kṛṣṇa through active service, the devotee steps entirely out of the jurisdiction of material nature. Śrīla Prabhupāda assured his disciples that as long as they remained fixed in their devotional duties, no danger could touch them. This unwavering commitment not only provides supreme safety in this world but guarantees eternal life in the next.
- In execution of my devotional service there may be so many dangers, but because I have taken shelter of Krsna's lotus feet, I am safe.
- If you persistently simply adhere to the devotional service of Krsna, there will be no more strength of this illusory nature to drag you. No more. There will be no more power to get you into this province of sense gratification.
- We have got varieties of service, and we have got such program. So if, some way or other, if we remain engaged always in devotional service, then there is no question of downfall or going to the hellish condition of life.
- When one becomes fixed-up in devotional service he never allows anyone else or any condition at all to hamper his service to Krishna or discourage him in any way.
- All-auspiciousness means go back to home, back to Godhead. So if we stick to pure devotional service, follow the rules and regulations, chant sixteen rounds, be engaged always in the service of the Lord, then ultimate gain is that tyaktva deham...
Conclusion

Through the strict observance of vows, the purification of the senses, and the unconditional offering of all energy to the Supreme Lord, his disciples learned the sublime art of living perfectly in this world while simultaneously paving their path back to the spiritual realm.
