Prabhupāda Teaches His Disciples How They Accept Knowledge through the Paramparā System
In a world plagued by endless mental speculation, finding the absolute truth requires a complete shift in approach. By explaining the descending process of knowledge, Śrīla Prabhupāda establishes that his followers must simply accept the perfect teachings of Kṛṣṇa and His authorized representatives. When disciples properly accept the authority of the paramparā, they save valuable time and make rapid, tangible spiritual progress.
Accepting the Authority of the Vedas
Human senses are inherently limited, making it impossible to uncover transcendental truths through mundane research or scientific endeavor. Therefore, Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that practitioners should accept the statements of the śāstra without hesitation or doubt. By trusting these ancient scriptures as the ultimate authority, a devotee transcends the need for empirical speculation and grasps the absolute reality effortlessly.
- Our process is descending process. We are not trying to understand by the ascending process. Inductive or deductive. We accept the statements of the Vedas. Therefore we haven't got to make much effort to understand the thing.
- We accept the Vedic injunction as truth. We haven't got to make research. We save time. So according to Vedic civilization, whatever is stated in the Vedas, we take it, fact. That's all. Sruti-pramanam.
- Because we follow Vedic principles. So Vedas declare that these four kinds of activity, they are sinful. So we accept. Our authority is Veda, just like lawyer's authority is law book.
- The Vedas says the stool of an animal is impure, but in another place it says that the stool of the cow animal is pure. So apparently we find contradiction. But still, because we accept the authority of the Vedas, therefore we accept the statement also.
Accepting the Lineage of Ācāryas
Spiritual knowledge is preserved and transmitted through an unbroken chain of self-realized masters. Instead of manufacturing new interpretations, Śrīla Prabhupāda instructs his students to accept the exact philosophy passed down by the previous ācāryas. This strict adherence to the paramparā system ensures that the message remains pure and that the conditioned soul receives the teachings exactly as they were spoken by the Supreme Lord.
- Acarya upasanam. We receive the knowledge throughout the disciplic succession of acaryas, and we accept it and we follow it, and practically you see the result. That is our request.
- Big, big stalwart acaryas, mahajanas, they are accepting; therefore we accept. That is sense. And if you sit down, "No, no, I have no faith," you'll sit down and remain a rascal, that's all.
- I may not know what is God, but because my predecessors, acaryas, confirm it, the "Here is Bhagavan," we accept it. That's all. We save so much trouble by mental speculation. We accept the parampara system.
- We want to see the quality, not the quantity. So our process is parampara. Just like in India there are acaryas: Ramanujacarya, Madhvacarya, Nimbarka, Visnu Svami, Caitanya. If the acarya accept, then we accept. This is our process.
Accepting the Bona Fide Spiritual Master
Approaching a genuine teacher is the foundational step in spiritual life. Without surrendering to a qualified representative of God, Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that it is impossible to make any tangible advancement. Accepting a guru is not a matter of blind faith; one must test the teacher according to scriptural injunctions and then voluntarily agree to be guided and ruled by their divine instructions.
- We are interested in spiritual subject matter. Therefore the process is adau gurv-asrayam. One has to accept a bona fide spiritual master. That is our process. Without accepting a bona fide spiritual master, we cannot make any progress. It is impossible.
- Accepting spiritual master means voluntarily accepting somebody to rule him.
- Although we cannot test, but sastra gives us the chance of testing. We accept spiritual master by testing, not by blind faith. No. According to the Vedic instruction, tad-vijnanartham.
- You have to take shelter of a person who is a devotee of Krsna, and you have to serve. That means you have to accept a devotee, a true devotee, a pure devotee, as your guide. That is our process.
Accepting Kṛṣṇa as the Supreme Lord
The culmination of all knowledge is recognizing the absolute supremacy of Kṛṣṇa. Rather than imagining a formless void or accepting modern imposters as incarnations, Śrīla Prabhupāda trains his disciples to acknowledge Kṛṣṇa as the original creator and supreme authority. When the Lord speaks in the Bhagavad-gītā, a sincere student accepts His words verbatim, without concocting unnecessary interpretations or seeking alternatives.
- Krsna conscious means whatever Krsna says, we accept. That's all. That is our philosophy.
- We accept Krsna, the Supreme Person, Who knows everything, past, present, and future. We take His leadership or we take the leadership of His representative. That is our process.
- A Krsna conscious person doesn't imagine anything. Krsna says that He is the greater than the greatest, we accept it; we don't imagine.
- Krsna says that "I am the Supreme." We accept it. That is hearing. And if you interpret, "Oh, Krsna means this, Kuruksetra means this," that mean you're spoiling your time. Why this, that? As it is, hear as it is.
Accepting Everything for the Lord's Service
Renunciation in the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement does not mean artificially giving up the material world, but rather utilizing it properly. As Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies, a practitioner can accept any facility, wealth, or modern convenience provided it is directed entirely toward pleasing the Supreme Lord. Disciples are trained to reject all things meant for their own sense gratification while eagerly accepting anything that can be dovetailed to push forward the spiritual mission.
- We do not reject anything, but we accept anything. The only difference is that we do not accept anything for our sense gratification.
- Our aim should be how to please Krsna. As it is said in English also, the ends justify the means. So it is my request to you that keep Krsna always in view and accept anything necessary for your worldly affairs.
- Expertness is you just try to do which is easily performed by you. You don't accept anything heavy task because Krsna does not want that you have to do this heavy task. Whatever you know, you just apply it. You dovetail it in Krsna consciousness.
- Any person whose constant occupation is Krsna consciousness, he is not a karmi; he is a devotee in all circumstances. So you should accept the best source of monetary income and use it for Krsna. And that is better than sannyasa.
Conclusion
By embracing the descending process of the paramparā, practitioners save themselves from the endless confusion of mental speculation. Śrīla Prabhupāda reassures his followers that true intelligence is demonstrated by properly accepting the authority of Kṛṣṇa, the scriptures, and the spiritual master. Those who sincerely accept this divine knowledge naturally develop pure devotion and can successfully utilize everything in this world for the eternal service of the Lord.
