Prabhupāda Requests Harmony Amongst His Disciples
The society of devotees is meant to be a unified, harmonious family working conjointly to save the conditioned souls. Śrīla Prabhupāda frequently warned that internal fighting and factionalism were the greatest threats to the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement. To maintain absolute solidarity, he instructed his disciples to strictly follow their spiritual vows, respect one another as prabhu, and deeply embed cooperation into their daily lives.
The Danger of Internal Friction
Deeply pained by news of bickering and rivalry among his followers, Śrīla Prabhupāda explained that if devotees manufacture whimsical ideas and fight, the movement will lose its spiritual potency. He compared this internal quarreling to a destructive force that ruins spiritual strength, drawing a direct parallel to the self-destruction of the famous Yadu-kula.
- Another lesson is that if we fight amongst ourselves, even we belong to the family of Krsna, we are ruined. This is the instance of Yadu-kula.
- Fighting amongst ourselves is not at all good.
- First of all, there must be a class of men, ideal men, brain; people will follow them. My request is therefore that you should become ideal men. If we fight . . . now there is fighting amongst ourself. That is very disappointment to me.
- If you manufacture whims and disagree and fight amongst yourself, then it will be another edition of these so-called movements. It will lose the spiritual strength. Always remember it.
Cultivating Respectful Dealings
Because every devotee volunteers their life for Kṛṣṇa's service, interactions within the temples must be exceptionally gentle, liberal, and polite. Śrīla Prabhupāda instituted the practice of addressing one another as prabhu, or master, to systematically enforce humility and mutual respect among his disciples.
- Amongst ourselves one should respect others as Prabhu, master, one another.
- We are teaching our disciples to address amongst themselves "prabhu." This is not new thing. This is very old.
- Amongst ourselves there must be very liberal and friendly dealings.
- Everyone comes to us to offer voluntary service, so amongst ourselves there must be good behavior. One may not feel sorry. So the leaders must take precautions as far as possible.
Cooperation for the Preaching Mission
The vast undertaking of spreading Kṛṣṇa consciousness across the globe requires seamless teamwork. Viewing quarrels between different departments as a direct detriment to Lord Caitanya's missionary ambition, Śrīla Prabhupāda heavily relied on his disciples' combined effort and sympathetic treatment of one another to expand the mission.
- Either this department or that department, if you quarrel amongst yourselves it will be detrimental to my missionary ambition. Please therefore stop this unnecessary strain.
- If you work conjointly, without quarreling amongst yourselves, a tremendous service can be done towards the expansion of our mission.
- We should very sympathetically treat amongst ourselves so that our missionary activities may go on without being hampered.
- You should do everything combinedly. That is my request. Gradually, by Krishna's Grace, we are expanding. So if amongst ourselves there is friction, it will be very dangerous.
Mature Leadership and Management
To manage the society's affairs peacefully and effectively, the GBC and temple presidents were given significant authority. Śrīla Prabhupāda expected these senior men to deliberate collaboratively, solve local problems, and present unified conclusions without unnecessarily taxing his brain with administrative disputes.
- I have appointed the GBC not to fight amongst yourselves but to manage.
- GBC authority must be accepted under all circumstances, not that there will be fighting amongst you.
- I am requesting you as my senior men not to tax my brain with so many details but simply come to a conclusion amongst yourselves and then present this final conclusion for my sanction.
- We are now growing in size, therefore, for general administration if you will act conjointly amongst the presidents, that will be a great relief for me.
Maintaining the Standard Program
When devotees strictly follow the morning program, study the scriptures, and chant without offense, the material modes of nature lose their grip. Śrīla Prabhupāda identified strict sādhana as the ultimate preventative measure against the tendency to quarrel, ensuring that his followers remain pure and unified in purpose.
- Chanting 16 rounds without fail, performing Kirtana at least twice daily, morning and evening, discussion on Bhagavad-gita, and Srimad-Bhagavatam in the class, and work diligently and cooperatively amongst yourselves is my fervent request.
- If you simply keep to our standard programme, that means chanting daily 16 rounds, rising early, attending mangal arati, like that, if this programme is strictly maintained amongst all the devotees, they will remain pure.
- You must study my books very scrutinizingly, follow the four regulative principles very strictly and chant 16 rounds daily avoiding the ten offenses. Don't take this movement as something cheap.
- So try to understand this philosophy of Krishna Consciousness by reading our books and literatures, discussing amongst the devotees and chanting Hare Krishna Mantra as much as possible.
Keeping the Supreme Lord in the Center
The society of devotees must demonstrate the perfection of harmony to the rest of the world. By keeping Kṛṣṇa as the ultimate center of all activities, Śrīla Prabhupāda assured his followers that they could easily bury their hatchets, sacrifice their personal agendas, and work together with ideal Vaiṣṇava behavior.
- My standing request is this: Amongst yourselves there should not be any disagreement. Whatever you do, do it by joint consultation. Because our center of activities is Krsna, for His sake we can sacrifice our life, wealth, words, intelligence, everything.
- We have to all cooperate amongst ourselves, otherwise what will people think if we ourselves fight with one another? A devotee is always ideal in behavior.
- We are preaching Krishna Consciousness, the greatest platform of harmony, and if we dissent amongst ourselves, and disunite, it doesn't look very well.
- The main thing is we must not carry grudges or continue to quarrel amongst one another. Bury the hatchet and join together to push on this movement cooperatively.
Conclusion
Rising above petty squabbles, personal whims, and internal politics is an absolute necessity for spiritual advancement. As Śrīla Prabhupāda consistently demonstrated, addressing one another as prabhu and managing the society through peaceful, joint consultation ensures the missionary activities remain unhampered. By deeply embedding Kṛṣṇa in the center of their lives and strictly adhering to standard spiritual practices, devotees acquire the purity needed to maintain absolute solidarity. Ultimately, cooperating amongst themselves in a spirit of love and sacrifice is the greatest practical demonstration of Kṛṣṇa consciousness to the world.
