Prabhupāda Instructs His Disciples on the Standard of Their Worship
To understand the delicate balance between inner spiritual cultivation and outward propagation, the devotees received clear directions from Śrīla Prabhupāda regarding their daily temple rituals. He emphasized that establishing a temple means committing to strict regulatory principles, yet he always reminded his followers that preaching remains the primary mission of the society. Through his letters and lectures, Śrīla Prabhupāda established a standard of devotion that simultaneously protects the neophyte practitioner and rapidly expands the movement.
Balancing Preaching and Deity Worship
To spread the saṅkīrtana movement across the globe, the early devotees had to focus their primary energy on public chanting and distributing transcendental books. Although temple rituals provide essential purification, Śrīla Prabhupāda made it clear that active preaching must never be compromised or sidelined for elaborate inner routines. If a choice ever had to be made between outdoor propagation and indoor ceremonies, he instructed his followers to prioritize reaching the innocent public.
- Churches are being closed. Similarly, if you do not keep yourself fit to preach, then your temples will be all closed in due course of time. Without preaching, you'll not feel enthused to continue the temple worship.
- Outdoor kirtana must be done, even at the cost of suspending all editorial work. That is your first and foremost business. Temple worship is not so important. If need be, the whole temple can be locked, but the outdoor kirtana cannot be stopped.
- Sankirtana, Love Feast and selling BTG, they are our primary engagements and next Temple worship. Temple worship is needed for the inner section.
The Standard and Necessity of Devotional Cultivation
Before installing the mūrtis in any newly opened center, the local leaders needed to guarantee that strict rules and regulations would be maintained without interruption. An authorized standard of arcana ensures that neophyte devotees gradually become freed from material desires, and Śrīla Prabhupāda warned that a temple should never be opened if the worship might later be abandoned. By focusing purely on the Supreme Lord through these practices, the practitioner attains profound spiritual elevation and steadiness.
- Once opened it cannot be closed. Somehow or other you have to manage to continue the temple worship. That is the devotional cult. If they are closed and it is impossible to re-open, then what can be done?
- If it is not possible to worship the Deity according to the rules and regulation, there is no need of establishing temple. But if there are devotees who can actually keep the temple worship method in right order, then by chanting, everything is complete.
- If one attains perfection in Deity worship, that is called Arcana Siddhi. Arcana Siddhi means simply by Deity worship one goes back to Godhead, immediately after this life.
- Even if you have got some desire within yourself, so the Bhagavad-gita says, in spite of having that desire, you can worship Krsna and ask so that in future your desires will be desireless.
Worshiping the Authorized Forms
For centers with limited resources or personnel, the worship of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and Lord Nityānanda provides a sublime and faultless spiritual program. Since the Supreme Lord is particularly pleased by the offering of tulasī leaves, Śrīla Prabhupāda encouraged all his centers to carefully cultivate and honor this sacred plant daily. He guided the society to strictly adhere to the worship of the Pañca-tattva, bypassing unauthorized additions while relying completely on the mercy of the golden avatāra.
- I am very glad that you are worshiping Caitanya Mahaprabhu, Nityananda Prabhu. So continue to do this. There is no need of installing Radha-Krsna, at least at the present moment.
- We chant "Nitai-Gaura." This is the process. We cannot change this policy. Panca-tattva must be worshiped; otherwise wherefrom we shall get . . .? The spiritual master . . . Nityananda Prabhu is the spiritual master.
- I am very much happy that you have added worship of Srimati Tulasi devi to your Temple activities. That is most auspicious.
- We worship tulasi. Why? Because it is very dear to Visnu. Tadiyanam. Visnu likes, Krsna likes. When, patram puspam phalam toyam (BG 9.26), the tulasi flower, leaf is offered to Krsna, He becomes very pleased.
The Position of the Spiritual Master
The Vedic process of paramparā requires that a sincere student approach the Supreme Lord exclusively through the transparent medium of the genuine ācārya. Because the spiritual master represents the original compiler of transcendental knowledge, Śrīla Prabhupāda explained that his disciples must regularly perform vyāsa-pūjā to receive true spiritual benefit. Honoring the guru with profound reverence keeps the disciple safely situated within the authorized disciplic succession.
- Vyasadeva is the authority. So Vyasadeva is not Mayavadi. He is Vaisnava. We belong to Vyasadeva's sampradaya, Brahma-sampradaya. Therefore we worship our spiritual master as Vyasadeva's representative, vyasa-puja.
- We worship the guru as Vyasa-puja because representative of Vyasa. And who is Vyasa? Representative of Narada. What is Narada? Representative of Brahma. What is Brahma? Representative of Krsna. This is called parampara system.
- Our process is to follow the footsteps of acaryas. Acaryopasanam, in the Bhagavad-gita it is said, for making progress in knowledge, one has to worship acarya, acaryopasanam. So by parampara system we follow.
- I have no objection to your worshiping my murti for Guru Puja. But for placing in the temple there must be a pair of murtis, (my Guru Maharaja must be there) as in Krsna-Balarama Mandir, and they must be permanently installed.
The Essence of Devotional Service
True worship in Kṛṣṇa consciousness extends far beyond the altar and encompasses every single daily activity performed for the pleasure of the Lord. Whether someone is cooking, writing, or simply discussing philosophy, Śrīla Prabhupāda confirmed that all such activities become perfect kīrtana when Kṛṣṇa is the center. This total dedication transforms ordinary life into a continuous state of transcendental connection.
- If you write books about Krsna, if you read books about Krsna, if you talk about Krsna, you think of Krsna, you worship Krsna, you cook for Krsna, you eat for Krsna - so that is Krsna-kirtana.
- In our society everything is open. There is no secrecy. We worship Krsna, we think of Krsna, we work for Krsna, we glorify Krsna, we chant for Krsna, we dedicate our life for Krsna. That's all.
- Take to this Krsna consciousness service by hearing, by speaking, by remembering, by giving actually service, by worshiping, by making friendship, and after all, everything for Krsna. That is perfection.
Conclusion
Through these profound instructions, the global Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement was endowed with a solid foundation of regulated devotional practice. By emphasizing vigorous preaching alongside the careful maintenance of the altars, Śrīla Prabhupāda ensured that his disciples would remain spiritually protected while successfully delivering the supreme benefit to human society.
