Prabhupāda Instructs His Disciples on the Proper Spiritual Use of Money
The energy of the Supreme Lord is meant entirely for His service, and wealth is no exception. In these practical directives, Śrīla Prabhupāda completely transforms his disciples' understanding of money, teaching them how to utilize it purely as a tool for spiritual advancement. He firmly establishes the principle that all funds belong to Kṛṣṇa and must never be hoarded or misused for personal sense gratification. Through strict standards of accounting, an unyielding focus on printing literature, and clear instructions for householders, Śrīla Prabhupāda guides his followers in navigating the material world without becoming entangled by its wealth.
The True Owner of Wealth
In material consciousness, the living entity tries to enjoy the resources of nature as the proprietor. Śrīla Prabhupāda shatters this illusion by reminding his disciples that Lakṣmī, the Goddess of Fortune, is eternally engaged in Kṛṣṇa's service, and any attempt to claim ownership of her energy is a criminal offense against the laws of nature.
- If by chance we get an abundance of money, we should always consider that it belongs to the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
- In Krsna consciousness we are getting sufficient money, but we should never think that the money belongs to us; it belongs to the Supreme Personality of Godhead and should be equally distributed to the workers, the devotees.
- No devotee should claim that any money or property belongs to him. If one thinks that any portion of property of this huge universe belongs to anyone, he is to be considered a thief and is punishable by the laws of nature.
- Laksmi's business is to stay engaged in Krsna's service. So all the money of the world, it should be engaged for Krsna's service.
Trusting Kṛṣṇa as the Ultimate Provider
Preaching the science of God requires resources, but a devotee need not become a mundane businessman to acquire them. Śrīla Prabhupāda assures his followers that if they maintain spiritual purity and sincerely attempt to spread the movement, Kṛṣṇa, who lacks nothing, will supply limitless men and money.
- My Guru Maharaja used to say, "Don't worry about money; do something nice for Krishna and money will come.
- I was maintaining the establishment simply depending on Krishna and then Krishna sent me everything - men and money. Similarly, if a sincere soul goes out and opens a center in any part of the world Krishna will help him in all respects.
- We should know it well that Krishna is no poor man, and He can give us any amount at any time. Simply He is waiting to see that we will use it (money) according to His desire.
- To spread the Krsna consciousness movement we need so many things, and Krsna is therefore supplying us the requisite money to advance this mission.
The Danger of Misusing Funds
Wealth carries a highly intoxicating material energy. Śrīla Prabhupāda issues severe warnings to his leaders and preachers, clarifying that dealing with public funds requires immense caution; any attempt to utilize Kṛṣṇa's money for personal sense gratification will instantly ruin one's spiritual life.
- Maya's most attractive feature is women and money. We Krishna Conscious men have to deal with women and money in course of preaching work, and the only prophylactic measure to save us is not to accept them for our sense gratification.
- The managers of the Krsna consciousness movement should be extremely cautious in regard to this point. Otherwise money will be the cause of lamentation, illusion, fear, anger, material attachment, material poverty, and unnecessary hard work.
- The preachers of the Krsna consciousness movement should be extremely careful not to misuse the immense quantities of money needed to spread this movement. Let us not make this money the cause of our distress.
- If we are not serious about understanding the science of Krsna, if you take some opportunity to become this, to become that, and make some money, and this and that, then the whole thing is finished. For opportunists there is no Krsna consciousness.
Printing Books as the Highest Investment
Idle money inevitably creates administrative and spiritual disturbances. To keep the society dynamically engaged, Śrīla Prabhupāda insists that the safest and most spiritually rewarding way to manage excess funds is to invest them heavily in the publication and distribution of transcendental literature.
- If you print books, some day somebody will read. But if we keep money, it creates disturbance. I am therefore always insisting, "Print books, Print books."
- We recommend that as soon as money accumulates in our Krsna consciousness movement, fifty per cent of it should be invested in printing books, and fifty per cent for expenditures, especially in establishing centers all over the world.
- It is due to the blessing of my Guru Maharaja. He directly told me that "If you get some money, publish some books." I took it seriously, so he's helping me. All our Godbrothers, they didn't take it.
- Now print books. Don't use this money for any other purpose than publishing. Some percentage may be kept by you for getting your own house, either purchasing or constructing our own temple. If the present house is available, then purchase.
Strict Accountability and Vigilance
Because the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement operates on public charity and book distribution, maintaining a spotless reputation is paramount. Śrīla Prabhupāda demands that temple presidents and managers be vigilant, ensuring that accounts are perfectly maintained and that no funds are whimsically wasted.
- The accounts must be kept very clearly. Then everyone will be pleased with us. Not a single farthing should be wasted. That will be our credit.
- On the whole our account should be kept very nicely because we are dealing with the public's money.
- My only request is we must spend money very cautiously and not to waste. For improvement we can spend. I am simply afraid that money may not be wasted.
- Please see that accounts are kept carefully, not that money is taken for whimsical expenditure. Be vigilant.
The Sacred Duty of Householders
In the Vedic system, specific spiritual ashrams have distinct financial responsibilities. While the brahmacārīs, vānaprasthas, and sannyāsīs must depend entirely on Kṛṣṇa and public charity, Śrīla Prabhupāda instructs the gṛhasthas (householders) to earn a livelihood and generously contribute half of their income to support the preaching mission.
- The Grhasthas or the householders can engage himself in earning money, either by accepting job or some professional work. But a Brahmacari, Vanaprastha, and Sannyasi is supposed only to depend on Krishna and beg from the Grhasthas.
- The householder should earn money by business or by profession and spend at least fifty percent of his income to spread Krsna consciousness; twenty-five percent he can spend for his family, and twenty-five percent he should save to meet emergencies.
- I quite approve your planning on becoming a householder, and at the same time serve the cause of our society. A Krishna Conscious member even though he is a householder may spend at least 50% of his income for the society.
- You have got so many assets. So you can utilize it for preaching. Dedicate your life. If you think that you are family man, you cannot dedicate twenty-four hours, then earn money and give it to Krsna consciousness movement as other family men.
Conclusion
Money itself is neither good nor bad; its true nature is determined by how it is utilized. By defining wealth as Kṛṣṇa's energy, Śrīla Prabhupāda lifts his disciples above the dangerous material pitfalls of greed and independent accumulation. He firmly establishes that the financial health of the society relies not on mundane schemes, but on spiritual purity, diligent preaching, strict accounting, and the massive distribution of transcendental books. When both renunciates and householders responsibly play their respective roles in managing the Lord's wealth, the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement is empowered to expand limitlessly without becoming corrupted by the material world.
